When Mike Grella passed on the 2009 MLS draft, it was unclear where the Duke striker would test
the professional soccer waters. It appears his quest for a professional contract has landed him in
England.
Grella is on trial with Leeds United, and scored three goals in Leeds' reserve
match against Barnsley on Tuesday.

When Marcus Tracy passed on Major League Soccer's last offer, and decided to skip the MLS
Combine and Draft for a chance at European soccer, he wasn't expected to wait too long to find
interest from abroad.

It took a few days, but a video of Jozy Altidore's Carling Cup goal has finally surfaced.
Here's his 30-yard free-kick blast:
What did you think of the goal? Ready to see Altidore try some free kicks for the U.S. national
team?

American soccer fans weren't the only ones watching the U.S. national team's run to the
Confederations Cup final, and the stellar performances from several American players to make it

Landon Donovan's loan move to Everton has been completed, sources confirmed to SBI on
Thursday.
The U.S. national team star and Los Angeles Galaxy captain will join the Liverpool-based club
when the transfer window opens on Jan.
The deepest position in the U.S. men's national team pool is about to get even deeper.
Schalke 04 midfielder Jermaine Jones has notified the German Football Federation that he intends
to change national teams and plans to play for the U.S. national team. Jones is taking advantage of
the new FIFA rule that allows players of any age to change national teams if they are eligible for
multiple national teams and have yet to play in an official match for either.
I've had several people write in to ask if NAC Breda technical director Earnie Stewart might go
after Eredivisie winker and former D.C. United teammate Freddy Adu.I have your answer: no. I spoke
with Earnie today, and he says their squad is complete.I'm actually trying to figure out the one or
two Dutch clubs that are interested, more by eliminating possibilities first.
The Landon Donovan show continued for Bayern Munich on Monday as the U.S. national team star
came off the bench and scored a goal in Bayern's 2-0 win vs. Kaiserslautern on Monday.
Donovan came off the bench in the second half, replacing Miroslav Klose, and put the friendly
out of reach with his perfect header from close range.

With most people (including those of us on SBI) focused on the MLS Draft and Landon Donovan's
performances with Bayern Munich last week, you might have missed the other American
player who beautifully scored for his German club side. The author of the fascinating
goal?
"I am here to score goals."With those words, fresh Sochaux catch Charlie Davies announced his
French ambition during his presentation. And in case you're wondering what squad number he's been
issued...- Greg Seltzer
U.S. national team striker Charlie Davies gave his first interview since the deadly car
accident he was involved in six weeks ago and revealed that while he is still coping with the
psychological impact of the accident, he expects to make a full recovery.
In an interview with ESPN's Jeremy Schaap released on Sunday, Davies stated that his doctors
believe he will make a complete recovery and he believes he will be back in time for the 2010 World
Cup next June.

If Jozy Altidore were to make a list of the best moments in his professional career then
his hat-trick performance in the United States' World Cup qualifying win over Trinidad & Tobago
last week would probably be at or near the top of the list.
[Photo: Sĩ Huyên/HAGL]U.S. international Lee Nguyen scored both goals to spark Ho ng Anh Gia Lai
to a sorely needed 2-1 home win over Thể Công. The win snapped a four-game league victory
drought and moved to the preseason title contenders up to eighth (and to within three points of
second place).
Freddy Adu is looking for a new club for the upcoming season, and while has yet to reveal which
clubs are interested in him, he has revealed a potential destination: Holland.
Adu told Sportweek that he is eyeing a switch to the Eredivisie. While the club or
clubs have yet to be identified, one possible destination could be NAC Breda, where Adu's former

American DaMarcus Beasley is looking to leave Scottish Premier League club Rangers as he's
struggled to get consistent playing time. Beasley has had an up and down career in Europe and was
dropped from the USA team this past summer. If he wants to have a chance at making the roster for
South Africa, he must have be playing regularly for a club in one of the top European leagues.
I'm in a hurry now, but will try to come back later to fill this out some (and will post a D.C.
United-Real Madrid Top 5 from Alex Abnos even sooner).Jozy Altidore is now officially a Hull
player. His work permit was approved just moments ago.I have learned that Fulham ace Clint Dempsey
is set to sign a fresh four-year deal with the club (pending a new work permit, which won't be a
problem).
If you're a U.S. national team fan hoping to catch a glimpse of midfielder Jermaine Jones, you
may soon get your chance.
Jones returned to practice for Schalke 04 on Tuesday, having finally recovered from a nagging
shin injury that has sidelined him for most of 2009. Jones ran through training exercises and some
ball work.
Everton's search for a striker has led them to none other than Jozy Altidore, but Villarreal
isn't interested.
According to Sky Sports, Everton has had an initial offer for Altidore turned down, with
Villarreal wanting the 18-year-old Altidore to settle in Spain.
Altidore has seen limited playing time for Villarreal, earning a pair of starts just before the
winter break only to return to the bench, but he told SBI just last month that he was happy in
Spain and enjoying his time with Villarreal.
Jozy Altidore's loan move to Spanish second division leaders Deportivo Xerez is now official, a
source close to Altidore confirmed on Friday.
Altidore joined his new club today for the start of a half-season loan that should afford him
the opportunity for much more playing time than he has been receiving with Villarreal.

/p pOn the same week that saw the MLS Draft class of 2009 enjoying a very promising first week in
the pros, the one player who bypassed the chance to lead that class enjoy some success across the
pond.
On behalf of some of my MLSR colleagues, I have the following tidbits mainly from Tribal
Football:
-Jozy Altidore could be going on loan to Hull City
-Michael Bradley could go back to PSV Eindhoven or Feyenoord
-Freddy Adu wants to go Dutch, not just for the big teams like Ajax and Feyenoord, but even NAC
Breda or FC Groningen if he gets a chance to play and develop
-Bryan Arguez is on trial with Belgium giants Charleroi
-Tony Taylor, a USMNT U-20 striker, is on trial with IK Start

the U.
It sounded like music to the ears of U.S. national team fans when Leeds United midfielder
Bradley Johnson stated in a recent interview with SkySports.com that he wanted to play for the
United States. Unfortunately for Johnson and U.S. fans, he can't play for the USA any time
soon.

Can anyone explain why American sensation Freddy Adu is not getting more playing time with mid
table AS Monaco in the French Ligue 1?
This is one question that bothers and still perplexes this writer. Yes Adu did not dazzle in MLS
when he played for DC United or Real Salt Lake, but amongst young talents in Canada at the FIFA
U-20, especially against Brazil, he dominated that game which paraded Pato and Jo.

Oguchi Onyewu is no stranger to the transfer rumor mill, but things are a bit different this
time around.
Onyewu heads into this summer's transfer window a free agent, meaning he will be able to sign
with any club he chooses.
It must feel good to be Benny Feilhaber right now.
After an impressive performance for the U.S. national team in the Confederations Cup, and after
a solid showing as a substitute in a 2-1 Gold Cup victory over Honduras last week, Feilhaber
scored twice in his first summer appearance for AGF Aarhus on Monday.

Two of the best players in the U.S. national team youth system will be taking their development
to Europe.
If you happened to catch a replay of the horrific tackle on DaMarcus Beasley that resulted in a
red card and Beasley's quick exit from Rangers' Scottish Cup win on Wednesdy, you probably spit up
your Cheerios for fear that the U.S. national team's best left wing option would miss serious
time.
You know the script all too well. American soccer player with foreign roots gets a chance of a
lifetime and signs with a big English club. It is the basic premise behind the movie "Goal", but it
is also the story of California native Anton Peterlin.
A defensive midfielder at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo last fall, Peterlin scored a dream
opportunity to train with English club Everton this spring and made the most of it, impressing
Everton manager David Moyes enough to earn a contract offer he will sign this summer.
It was a very successful season for several Americans playing abroad in European soccer. Tim
Howard was one of the top goalkeepers for Everton, and Clint Dempsey played a major role in Fulham
earning a 7th place finish in the Premier League. Oguchi Oneywu played for Standard and won another
league title in Belgium, while Zak Whitbread and Millwall nearly were promoted to the English
Championship.

Following a successful two-week trial, former Duke University standout Mike Grella has been
offered a contract to play with English First Division side Leeds United, sources told SBI on
Friday.
The stage is set for Landon Donovan and only he can deliver.
The U.S. national team star won't find a better opportunity than the one that now stands before
him. He is on loan with Bayern Munich, trying to convince the club's board that they should side
with Juergen Klinsmann and buy him from the LA Galaxy.
Dominic Cervi has gone more than a year waiting for his professional soccer dreams to come true,
and now the American goalkeeper is set to finally become a pro as he is set to sign a deal with
Scottish club Celtic after receiving his Italian passport last week.
Selected with the 12th overall pick in the 2008 MLS Draft by the Chicago Fire, Cervi passed on a
minimum-salary offer from the Fire and eventually made his way to Scotland, where he impressed
Celtic after a lengthy trial last September.
Okay, I've been working on this transfer saga for a couple of days, and this is whhat I have
learned:U.S. backline cop Oguchi Onyewu now has three Prem offers (Birmingham, Fulham and mystery
meat), two La Liga offers (shrug), one Bundesliga offer (der schrug), one Ligue 1 offer (presumably
PSG or Marseille, though Lyon is a possibility) and the seemingly also-ran bid from Fenerbahçe.

If you were hoping to see Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan continue his recent tear at
the MLS All-Star game, then you may be disappointed to know he might not play.
Freddy Adu will be staying in Portugal for the upcoming European season, but he won't be
spending it with Benfica.
According to Portuguese website Abola, Adu has been loaned to Belenenses. Adu didn't figure into
Benfica's plans after returning from an unsuccessful loan spell with French club Monaco.
