Houston Dynamo’s 4-0 defeat of Atlanta United kicked off the 2018 Major League Soccer season on American television with 469,000 viewers tuning into Univision’s coverage of the match. Viewership saw an 8% decrease from 509,000 for Los Angeles Galaxy vs FC Dallas last year.

FOX Sports 1 saw an even bigger drop with their two matches averaging only 174,000 viewers, down over 40% from their first two broadcasts of 2017.

Saturday’s match between Monterrey and Toluca drew 1.3 million viewers on Univision to make it the most-watched soccer match of the week. The following day, Chivas and Atlas drew 1.2 million viewers to become the most-watched game that day.

The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) will once again be competing against the national teams of Germany, France, and England as the SheBelieves Cup makes its return to American television with its second annual edition beginning March 1.

The United States won all three of their 2016 SheBelieves Cup matches to win the inaugural tournament, conceding only one goal to runners up Germany on the final match day.

Week two of MLS action is in the books and it was another outstanding weekend at the gate. Prior to league action, there were great crowds for the Champions League games in mid-week. These included big numbers in KC and San Jose (given capacity) and a fair mid-week showing in LA. It was a busy weekend all around for soccer fans watching at home, with an array of EPL games during the weekend and other European leagues as well, all available on American television.

MLS commissioner Don Garber thinks there's too much of his sport on American television. Way too much. And no, he's not being sarcastic.

He made the poorly phrased claim while speaking to the Associated Press Sports Editors and to avoid headlines like the one above, it probably should've come out a bit different.
