The South African Football Association and the Premier Soccer League have announced a dramatic
increase in ticket prices for 2010-11 PSL season. The official explanation given was a need to
ensure the long-term sustainability of World Cup stadiums and provide funds for grassroots
football.

African football has lost a giant. Reggie Shelembe (1960-2010), former player for African
Wanderers, Durban Bush Bucks and AmaZulu and coach of Maritzburg City, has passed away from cancer.
My heartfelt condolences to his family.
Thabo Dladla is a highly committed youth coach and former professional player with AmaZulu FC. His
weekly 'Talking Football' column in a Pietermaritzburg newspaper focuses on the game at the
grassroots, not on the 2010 World Cup or the PSL. 'There is something wrong when a country with
over 48 million people and a huge football budget cannot produce good players,' writes Dladla this
week.
A family night out with 6,000 friends. Maritzburg United vs Amazulu: KwaZulu-Natal derby in the
round of 32 of the Nedbank Cup, South Africa's FA Cup. At kickoff, deafening kwaito music gives way
to a cacophony of vuvuzelas. Not exactly kid friendly, but there it is. The relaxed mood of this
Saturday night crowd, a pleasant mix of men, women and children of all backgrounds, makes up for
the dreadful football on display.

With a sold-out 76 700 crowd, and the presence of president Jacob Zuma and Bafana Bafana, the
opening of Soccer City with this afternoon' s Nedbank Cup Final between AmaZulu and Bidvest Wits
is expected to be a heluva event.

Amazulu celebrate their 3-2 win over local rivals Maritzburg United (Alegi photo)
The PSL season in KwaZulu-Natal opened with an exciting goal-filled derby in front of a small
but vociferous crowd at Mabhida Stadium in Durban. Hosts Amazulu nipped Maritzburg United 3-2,
making us temporarily forget about the countrywide strikes that are turning patients away from
hospitals, keeping students out of school, and possibly shutting our water off tomorrow.
