Real Madrid started their Champions League campaign with a 5-2 win against a very aggressive FC
Zurich team. The Swiss hassled and made Real uncomfortable until Cristiano Ronaldo scored a
free-kick that opened up the game. Xabi Alonso was pulling the strings all night long, setting up
two goals forRaul and Hiquan.
It's been a long hard summer for Rafa.
In
Glen Johnson
Already proven himself to be a very effective attacking force and offers more than the steady
but unspectacular Alvaro Arbeloa. Seemed pricey when initially purchased but seems like a very good
transfer even after such a short spell, hopefully will get better and better.
I've been arguing for months that Rafa Benitez's poor man-management of Xabi Alonso is the main
reason the midfielder decided to leave the club. Well, Alonso himself has now confirmed this in a
new interview.
In the interview with Guillem Balague, Alonso was asked about his relationship with Benitez, to
which he responded:
"There have been a lot of rumours but as I`ve said before, it was a professional relationship.
- Corinthians defeated Santos 2-1 yesterday thanks to their goalkeeper,
Felipe. The fans responded by singing him a Birthday Song at the end of the match.
If you want to know how the Timao's jerseys are delivered hot and fresh to the dressing room every

Amid the ‘stories' of bids for David Villa and Franck Ribery, Liverpool spent a considerable
amount of money on the comparatively unknown Alberto Aquilani. Already, the former Roma player is
charged with saving Liverpool's supposedly ‘faltering' title hopes, but could the expectation
placed on his shoulders prove to be counter-productive?
With this weekend and mid-week being occupied by international games, let's reflect on the start
to the season so far and specifically the players and teams that have made bad starts to the
season.
Everton
A player who states his desire to leave and is then played by his manager is always going to
effect the other players, and Everton's start to the season has being shocking.
There is no denying that Liverpool F.C. is the form team in the
Barclays Premier League at the moment. Rafa's Reds have defied
all odds to overcome a frustrating start to the campaign and surprisingly, the Steven
Gerrard - Fernando Torres pairing isn't exclusively responsible for leading the
revival.
Liverpool midfielder Lucas does not think he should be compared to former Anfield ace Xabi
Alonso.
The 22-year-old was recruited by Rafa Benitez from Brazilian side Gremio in 2007 but was not
employed as a regular starter in his first two seasons with the club.
However, after Alonso left for Real Madrid over the summer, Lucas has been given the responsibility
of filling the hole in central midfield left by the Spaniard.
So, five games into the league, which players have begun as if their lives depended on it? Who
are the early contenders for player of the year, or golden boot winner? Who has surprised you the
most? Here are a few names to consider, based on what we've seen so far.
Thomas Vermaelen
Hands up who knew about this chap before Arsenal signed him?

Too much of a good thing, this maybe the dilemma that is rattling themind of REAL MADRID Coach
Pellegrini as he figures out how tobalance & create a clock working team. The observations &
theexperience up till now show a potential dependence on midfielderXabi Alonso as "Director of the
Orchestra" & a lack of a stable ongoingtactical set up in the team's line-ups.

It's getting difficult to find new ways to praise Fernando Torres. See here and here, among other
sycophancy. The goals per game, the hat-tricks, the fact he can score any kind of goal, that he's
only 25; I can go on and on. But there's little else to be written on how potent he is. So I got to
thinking about the "supporting cast.
The Sporting Index traders have priced up the outright Champions League win index and have
installed the two big Spanish sides as the favourites.
Spain
The current champions, Barcelona, did spread bettors a big favour last season, comfortably
winning La Liga, as well as producing an assured performance to beat Man United in the final in
Rome.
