I feel so sorry for Kieran Gibbs but all the hype about Almunias display versus Man Utd in the
first leg must of got to him: he clearly should of saved the Ronaldo free kick.
Well what a dissapointing end to a good start! Typical Arsenal; control the game and then score
but don't take advantage, by scoring another goal when on top. Then stupidity from Almunia allows
an equaliser, then I'm not even gonna try to explain Diaby's actions. What was he thinking?
Although Almunia was to blame again, he should of collected the ball from the cross.
Lies, damn lies, and Arsenal Stats
The blogoshpere is all atwitter (see what I did there?) about the dot com's article detailing
Arsenal's supposed statistics. Ahhhhh, I'm calling bullshiat on this.
I don't trust statistics that are so obviously false.
We all know that Arsenal's defense needs work, hell the whole team could step up in that regard:
even Cesc is talking about the need for a team defense step-up ahead of the Champions League clash
with Man U. So, us fans fretting over it is probably not going to do a lick of good and us bloggers
writing about it is pretty much pointless.
Brazilian midfielder Denilson has been rated as the 16th most efficient player in the Premier
League by statistics experts Actim Index. Despite being criticised by many Arsenal fans this
season, Denilson proved to be a reliable figure in central midfield during Cesc Fabregas'
three-month absence.
That United deserve to be in the final and are a better team is no mystery after these two games
but I have to be frank with you, I didn't do my homework in the match preview and didn't know it
was going to be Mr. Roberto Rosetti to referee our game. As soon as I realised it, well, I knew
what this half was going to be.
Many Arsenal fans were left frustrated after last Saturday's penalty kick awarded to Manchester
United as they believe Wayne Rooney dived.
On the issue, the player said:
I think everyone who watches me play knows I am an honest player who tries to be as honest as
they can.
Jens Lehmann was dropped by Stuttgart after attending Oktoberfest, hours after his team's defeat
against Cologne (2-0) in Bundesliga. Plus, Arsenal's former goalkeeper gifted his rivals the 2nd
goal by losing the ball outside the area. As we can see up there in the picture, Jens is smiling
(something suspicious in itself) next to his wife [.
By 1970's GoonerAlmuniaIt feels nice to type out Emmanuel Almunia's name when giving the ratings
for an Arsenal performance. He was called to the rescue twice and he was equal to it. The first
from a long range shot from Downing which he saved at the second attempt and the second from old
boy Aliadiere who found himself with only the goalkeeper to beat.
Let's preview this weekend of Premier League action, as we do every Thursday. We look at (I) best
match for a neutral (II) most fantasy friendly match (III) studs and duds and (IV) a prediction of
a weekly best eleven lineup.
I. Arsenal @ Manchester United: The Gunners are confident of a win at Old Trafford after scoring 15
goals in their first 4 games, but may be without club captain Cesc Fabregas.
Despite getting off to a start that has gone beyond all expectations, the football pundits
continue to dig around for any reason to stick to their idiotic pre-season predictions of Arsenal's
impending doom and gloom. The club is 15-2-2 overall having scored 55 goals, 10-0 at home having
scored 33 goals at the Emirates.
Now before everyone goes absolutely mental at me pray let me explain.
I judge keepers as if they were in a league format. For example;
Premiership; Casillas, Cech, Buffon, Reina, Given, etc AND finally now, Almunia
Championship; Howard, Robinson, etc
Blue Square Premiership; Gomes
Get my drift?
Wayne Rooney in his preferred attire for GW 38 against Hull
Well, it's all over. At the top of the table at least. Despite Liverpool's valiant efforts,
Manchester United have done it again. Kudos to them, I guess.
But for fantasy footie managers (and EPL teams at the bottom of the table), the season is still
very much alive.
Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia told Spanish magazine Don Ballon how Arsenal players make
jokes of transfer rumours when they come out in the media.
The Spaniard said:
We are not affected by transfer speculation and sometimes it is a good thing for us because we
make jokes about it when it comes out in the press.
Afternoon all, so Fabianski has signed a new deal with us this week. This can be seen as a
postive that the club is going in the right direction and may encourage others such as R.Van Persie
to also sign on. My one and only concern though is, is Fabianski good enough to replace Almunia
when he is injured or unable to play or even is Almunia good enough to Be our number one?
Manchester Utd 2-1 Arsenal
So, an early defeat, but I'm still scratching my head to work out how we came out of that game
with nul points.
Last season, in our second game we capitulated meekly to Fulham at Craven Cottage, a defeat that
set the tone for the next six months.
It is strange to believe that Arsenal have already played 5 games this season. After contemplating
over and over, I decided to do a 'player of the month' post. So making its way for the first time
this season, its Arsenal HERO and VILLAIN of the month.
HERO: Thomas Vermalen
The first contender for this honour was skipper fantastic Fabregas, but he missed the game at Old
Trafford.
Arsenal came into its own with crisp, free flowing football. Cesc with a brace, Nasri with a
very welcome contribution on his return, and Diaby rounded up the scoring. But Arshavin was the
source having a hand in three of the goals. And Wenger singled him out.
Wenger highlighted Andrey Arshavin - who had a hand in three of the goals - for special
praise, saying: "He was outstanding.
Wow, this is my 300th post today. For those of you who have been reading since the very beginning
almost two full years ago, thanks for sticking around. For those of you who are newer to the site,
I hope you'll be here for years to come.
I haven't updated since after the Villareal game, but I'm sure you've read a match report for it
somewhere else and if you haven't then you are out of luck because I don't think I'm going to do
one.
Arsenal is missing its defense. Let me not understate the obvious. Anytime Mikael Silvestre is
brought on, it is not just dire. It is a crisis.
We do not have Gallas, Clichy, Djorou, Sagna, Almunia and now Gibbs possibly out with a groin
problem. In fact, Silvestre will probably be shunted to the left and Song will pair up with Toure
as center back.
Goalkeeper Manuel Almunia, defender Johan Djourou and frontman Emmanuel Adebayor are all expected
to return for Arsenal's league tie with Middlesbrough this Sunday. All three have been out of some
important fixtures in the Gunners' fixture list, but have been pencilled in to start Sunday's
fixture at the Emirates.
Well, what can you say?
First things first, you have to say the best team won this tie. Full credit to Manchester United
for a superior performance even the most diehard Gunner can't say they don't deserve their spot in
the final.
But we certainly could have made it more difficult for them.
So it's the mancs again, anyone expecting to come away with anything more than zero points put your
hands up, I thought so, we're hardly on the crest of the wave at the moment. Arshavin returns but
it's the state of our defence that is of real concern, Almunia looks to be out, while Gallas and
Clichy remain out, only a mad Arsenal man would be feeling confident going into this one.
Arsenal last won the league at Old Trafford in 2002 after Sylvain Wiltord clinched the title with
his famous goal, or even more infamous celebration. Things have changed massively since then
though, Arsenal have moved into a new stadium, United are arguably the best club in the world and
the north Londoners have Mikael [.
Regardless how good or bad our opponents have been so far, regardless how good Arsenal's
performances have been since the season started, nothing beats the drama of a Manchester United vs
Arsenal game and with Alex Ferguson's side already losing a game, they will be more than determined
to get all three points.
I am fuming. I will keep this brief and come up with something more in depth tomorrow, but the
manner of our defeat today was incredibly cruel. Watch the replays of the Rooney 'penalty', it's a
very soft decision indeed, he has lost control of the ball, he throws himself down before contact
is made, the contact is also not great, Almunia does largely pull out of the challenge.
So there we were in The Fountain.
Junior Goonier joined us with 3 of his mates just after kick off.
Between us we were 3 Liverpool fans, a dyed-in-the-wool Arsenal fan and a Leicester City fan with a
slight lean towards the Arse.
Tight start with neither side able to get flowing and both making silly errors when passing.
Morning all,
well yesterday was interesting, through pure stupidity we managed to lose a game we were winning
comfortably. We conceded a penalty that wasn't, but Almunia seemed to want to do everything to
convince the ref it was a penalty by flying off his line to the feet of the already falling Wayne
Rooney and Diaby seemed to get confused as to what end he was supposed to be playing towards.
While it is far too early to make any sort of valid title predictions based on the limited
premier league action served up thus far, it is fair to say that of the so called title contenders
(I'll include Man City in the equation), I am somewhat surprised at the start made by Chelsea.
It is not so much their 100% record, which means little at this stage, but the manner of their
performances which have caught the eye.
Last week I was away for four days and the timing for my trip was spot on as of course the
Arsenal were not in action because of World Cup Qualifiers and friendlies. But, I can't say I
didn't miss anything as there was plenty going on and below I will try to provide my thoughts on
all the news on our beloved Arsenal.
Well, that wasn't very much fun. I haven't found a good "highlights" video yet, but will post it
when I do.
I guess my thought is this let's not overreact. Yes, this is a bad result for us. Yes, I thought
the match was pretty evenly matched, so to come out of it with 0 points. Yes, it sucks to watch
Adebayor stomp a player in the face, get away with it, then score a goal and celebrate in front of
Arsenal's fans (stay classy, Ade.
Somewhere in amongst the furore that surrounded Emmanuel Adebayor's Saturday afternoon, a
football match took place.
I know it's difficult to spot and you may have to search through a pile of seething Arsenal
supporters and endless reams of video evidence to find it but I assure you, it
did take place.
If you didn't like that pun I apologize. I thought it was pretty good. Then again, puns tend to
annoy a lot of people. Why? I don't know. It's not like it is the lowest form of humour. That would
be sarcasm. "Yeah, right!" (said Samuel Johnson)
Anyway, the title is in reference to tomorrow's Champions League opener game against Liege.
First of all apologies for the lack of posts in the last two days. It is not because I've been
stuck on topics to write about. There are two reasons. A post this week will explain one reason
why I didn't write anything since the end of September.
I did try posting something yesterday, it was going to be mainly images.
Players report back to London today, and hopefully by the end of today or early tomorrow we'll
have an inventory of who picked up knocks playing in internationals. At the moment, the only one
I've heard is Gael Clichy, who injured his thigh playing for France yesterday. This must have
frustrated Wenger, who was actually commentating on the match for French television, noted that
Clichy was hurt and should be substituted, only to watch him struggle through to the end of the
game.
A very good Saturday to all of you. No Arsenal today as they will only be playing tomorrow. So
full preview only on tomorrow's post.
Arsenal held their AGM on Thursday and it was a much relaxed one compared to the one held post
the semifinal lost to Man United. There were no one in the party who questioned Arsene Wenger's
actions or tactics.
Catch me if you can
Stroke of luck you say? Not in my opinion.
Arsenal continued to have the upper hand over their North London rivals as we convincingly won
3-0 at Ashburton Grove. Many will say that up to the first goal, Spurs have matched Arsenal stride
for stride but that cannot be further away from the truth.
Arsenal's stand-in captain Manuel Almunia pin-pointed some of the problems the squad faced during
the start of the season, but believes the side is now stronger and ready to win. He said: We have
had bad moments against the kind of team that play long balls, lots of crosses. The attitude of the
team has changed [.
