Everyone likes having defenders from the Big Four clubs, but picking the regular starters can be
deceptive. Ranking defenders for minutes played last season, of the top 25 only 5 come from
Chelsea, Man Utd, Liverpool or Arsenal. Many of the big fours' defenders get injured or rotated
during the season - picking the few players who regularly start can be tough in the preseason.
Arsenal went into the game needing a 4-0 win if they wanted to retain the Emirates Cup due
to Hamburg earlier winning 3-0 against Juventus. Leaving Hamburg on 7 points, Arsenal started with
a very strong side with Adebayor, Van Persie, Sagna, Gallas, Almunia, Nasri and Diaby all starting.
Real Madrid named a strong side [.
Arsenal will be at the top of the Premier League for at least 24 hours after defeating Newcastle
United 3-0 for the second successive time in only four days. The Gunners, who also beat Newcastle
3-0 in the FA Cup on Saturday, are now three points ahead of Manchester United, who face Portsmouth
at Old Trafford tomorrow.
Blackburn Rovers were already in for a tough match at the Emirates on Monday, but the returns of
Mathieu Flamini and Manuel Almunia to the Arsenal squad will make victory even more improbable for
a hapless Mark Hughes.
Arsenal's Spanish goalkeeper Manuel Almunia was injured in training ahead of Arsenal's match at
Manchester City last Saturday.
An excellent three-points at the Reebok against a team that used to intimidate us, and who managed
to put us on the back foot in the early stages of the game.
Despite opening brightly, and comprehensively out-passing Bolton, they took the lead through a goal
which, again, asked questions of our ability to defend from set-pieces.
Arsenal stayed at the top of the Premier League after defeating London rivals West Ham 2-0 at the
Emirates. Early goals from Eduardo and Emmanuel Adebayor sealed the victory for the Gunners.
Elsewhere, Manchester United and Chelsea both won, with the Reds keeping pace only two points
behind the Gunners.
Arsenal welcomed back Adebayor, Van Persie, Eboue, Gallas, Djourou and gave a debut to Samir
Nasri as Arsenal welcomed back the International that played in the European Championships. Arsenal
lined up like this: - Almunia- -Sagna- -
Gallas- -J. Djourou- - Clichy- - Walcott- - Eboue- - Denilson- -Nasri-
-Van Persie-
-Adebayor- The match was underway in the Mercedes Benz Arena as [.
This post is moan.
The referee in the Dynamo Kiev - Arsenal match called a penalty on Bacary Sagna when the actual
incident was a foul by the Dynamo Kiev foward; one worthy of a yellow card.
The call was a mistake. Mistakes happen, and it was a clever bit of cheating by the forward,
reaching behind his back, grabbing Sagna's jersey, falling, and bringing Sagna down with him.
Morning all. It's still early in the day and it's already been terrible. This is of course
compounded by what happened yesterday at the Emirates...which we shall discuss.
If you didn't get to see the match, in which feelings went from distress to glee to absolute
disaster, then you missed one hell of a match, if you were a neutral supporter.
Arsenal lined up in the following:
Almunia
Sagna G.Hoyte J.Hoyte Clichy Wilshere Ramsey
Denilson Traore
Bendtner Vela Arsenal started off quickly and in the first few mins Traore
whipped a cross in from the left the ball fell out to young prodigy Jack Wilshere he hit a
shot from the edge of the area to give Arsenal the lead.
Arsenal face off against Newcastle for the second time in four days this Tuesday as they look to
record yet another win against the Magpies.
The Gunners have already defeated the Magpies twice this season, although they were held to a 1-1
draw in the league in early December. The latest match between the two sides was a 3-0 home win for
Arsenal as the Gunners progressed to the fifth round of the FA Cup on Saturday.
Second-placed Arsenal take on sixth-placed Manchester City this Saturday in the day's early
fixture. Arsene Wenger will be hoping to become the first manager to win at the City of Manchester
Stadium this season, as City look to break back into the European spots.
The stadium has become a fortress for City this season, seeing the Citizens drop only 6 points in
12 home games.
It would be hard to have many complaints after such a convincing performance away to Blackburn
yesterday. To be fair to Blackburn 4-0 does not tell the entire story, things could have been a
little different if certain chances had been taken, however only a lunatic would claim that Arsenal
didn't deserve the sound victory.
Arsenal outcast Jens Lehmann has agreed to switch the Gunners with his former club Borussia
Dortmund. The 38 year-old goalkeeper has only to sort out a few small details before his transfer
is officially announced.
The Germany number one was first-choice keeper at Arsenal until earlier this season when two
early-season errors saw him lose his place to longtime backup goalie Manuel Almunia.
Manuel Almunia and Gilberto Silva were ruled out of tomorrow's game at Manchester City. The injured
duo will join Johan Djourou, Robin van Persie, and Tomas Rosicky in the stands. Arsenal are also
missing Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Eboue, and Alex Song due to the African Cup of Nations.
Almunia twisted his thumb in training but should only be out for about a week.
Arsenal travel to the San Siro this Tuesday to face off against AC Milan in the return leg of their
Champions League round of sixteen match up against the Champions League Champions. Arsenal failed
to leverage their home advantage at the Emirates in a 0-0 draw, but the Gunners will take
confidence from their dominance of the home leg.
Jens Lehmann has certainly been a colourful character during his five years in England. Above
anything else, he's been a fantastic goalkeeper for Arsenal, and it's only this season where he's
fallen out of favour with Arsene Wenger. The German has also been involved in a fair few
altercations with opposition team players who have [.
Which full team from last season, out of the top four, has the best players individually...??
Order: Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United (My Opinion) Goalkeeper: Almunia, Cech,
Reina, Van Der Sar (Cech) Right Back: Sagna, Belletti, Finnan, Brown (Sagna) Centre Back: Gallas,
Terry, Caragher, Ferdinand (Ferdinand) Centre Back: Toure, Carvalho, Agger, Vidic (Vidic) Left

Another game, another easy win at the Emirates. It was at times a pleasure to watch, and at
other times, agonizing (ok, to an extent) to see the opportunities missed. The final score should
have been 6-0. At least. Undue pessimism aside, it was a very good result for Wenger's kids.
Important to note that it was Cesc's 200th Arsenal appearance - rather amazing for a 21 year
old.
Arsenal, and especially Arsene Wenger, continue with their quest to win the UEFA Champions League
and prove themselves as being one of the best teams in Europe. They qualified with ease against
Twente, winning 6-0 on aggregate, and they will feel confident they can come out of this group and
earn a place in the [.
League leaders Arsenal host 16th-placed Birmingham on Saturday as the London giants look to stay
clear ahead of Manchester United at the top of the table.
The Gunners are unbeaten in their last nine games in all competitions, having won seven and drawn
two. They have not lost a game in the Premier League since early December, and have every reason to
believe that their recent unbeaten run will continue on Saturday.
Barclay's English Premier League leaders Arsenal may lose their top spot to Manchester United today
when the Red Devils host Newcastle United at Old Trafford. The Gunners went into the weekend two
points ahead of their nearest rivals, but dropped two unlikely points at home against lowly
Birmingham.
The Blues were outplayed throughout most of the 90 minutes, and Arsenal looked sure to win after
taking an early lead thanks to an Emmanuel Adebayor penalty kick.
Everyone's favourite all-action midfielder and the man who avenges any onfield slight directed
against Cesc Fabregas is still yet to sign a contract extension with Arsenal. Mathieu Flamini's
contract withers into nothingness this summer, and he still hasn't scrawled his name on a new one -
with a host of Italian giants sniffing [.
Some of you may have noticed that Germany were held to a 2-2 draw against Belarus on Tuesday,
despite dashing into a two-goal lead by half-time. It hardly bodes well for their chances of
winning Euro 2008, although everybody's favourite keeper Jens Lehmann claims that his error-ridden
performance for Joachim Low's team was down to [.
There can be very few Gooners who thought that Arsene Wenger's decision to replace Jens Lehmann
with Manuel Almunia at the start of last season was a bad one. After all, the German had blundered
in successive matches, firstly gifting David Healy a goal against Fulham and then allowing the ball
to slip through his [.
The first pre-season game is in the bag. I caught the 10-minute highlights on Arsenal TV Online;
recommended for all Gooners.
The first goal came form Jay Simpson, with the kind of finish you'd expect from a 20-goal striker.
The Londoner Simpson then had the assist for the second goal to Nacer Barazite, whose finish was
right off the top shelf.
Morning all. Not a lot of news following the demolition of Burgenland yesterday. Cesc Fabregas came
out and killed off anyone saying that he was going to Real Madrid, in fact saying that he made no
statement about Madrid at all. Good work from Cesc yet again. I think he does everything well,
football, handling the press, his hair, etc.
Arsenal bounced back from last weekends Premier League defeat to Fulham with a superb win over
Steve McClaren's FC Twente. Nicklas Bendtner started ahead of below-par Emmanuel Adebayor while
Kolo Toure was dropped to the bench mainly thanks to Johan Djourou's previous performances in the
side. Arsenal Starting XI Almunia Sagna - Djourou - Gallas - Clichy Walcott - [.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has stated that Jens Lehmann is free to leave the Gunners during the
transfer window, but maintains that the veteran stopper has not yet decided on his future.
Rumors had it that Borussia Dortmund, the player's former club, were set to announce Lehmann's
signing yesterday, but the day passed with little transfer movement of note, and Lehmann still at
Arsenal.
Arsenal returned to their winning ways today after an impressive 3-0 victory over London rivals
Fulham. The victory completed the double over their London rivals, and kept up pressure on league
leaders Manchester United, who sit above Arsenal on goal differential after defeating Reading 2-0
at the Madejski.
There are several types of football fans. The wannabe manager, the statistician, the severely
optimistic, the completely opposite of that, and the ones almost slipping off the edge of their
seat through uncontrollable tension, even when the score is 6-0 in favour of your side and you're
playing Derby at home.
Arsenal travel to the JJB Stadium this Saturday to face off against relegation-threatened Wigan.
Steve Bruce's Latics, who are currently 14th in the Premier League, would consider any point(s)
taken from their clash against the league leaders a good haul, but will face an uphill battle
against the impressive Gunners.
Well, according to him anyway, although Manuel Almunia may beg to differ. After all, there's no
reason why Arsenal's Spanish keeper would make up a lie about Lehmann's hostility towards him,
especially as he's Arsene Wenger's number one pick these days. Nevertheless, The Guardian reports
that the German cat has denied that he hates anyone, apart [.
Arsene Wenger continues to pursue potential goalkeepers to keep Spaniard Almunia on his toes, and this latest rumour seems to be one hell of a bargain.
Arsenal are lining up a £3.5m bid for Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given. (News of the World)
NEWCASTLE UNITED'S Shay Given is the latest keeper to be linked to the Arsenal number [.
Arsenal's new season started today with a friendly against League 2 side Barnet. Arsenal
played a mixture of youth and first team members in a hard fought victory at Underhill stadium. The

Arsenal started their second pre season game on Tuesday evening against Hungarian opposition
Szombathelyi Haladas infront of 13, 000 spectators, Arsenal gave debuts to Carlos Vela
and Gavin Hoyte in a mixture again of first team and reserve/ youth players. The line up was:
Almunia Sagna Gavin Hoyte Justin Hoyte Clichy
Walcott Ramsey
Denilson Wilshere
Bendtner Vela First Half Arsenal started the [.
Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes insists that he has never had any contact with North London
rivals Arsenal; as he began to seek a transfer away from Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven. "I was
told by the press about Arsenal, but they never made any official offer for me," Gomes told
setantasports.com.

It's a big disappointment. But Fulham deserve full credit for this win. They had a plan and
executed it perfectly: neutralize the Arsenal's weak central midfield and clamp down on the left
flank.
Arsenal's team on the pitch were not fluid; their passes astray, their runs sluggish; they were
often a step late to the ball.
Arsenal strolled to a 4-0 win tonight at the Emirates Stadium thanks to goals from Samir Nasri,
William Gallas, Theo Walcott, and Our featured player Nicklas Bendtner. Arsenal won 6-0 on
aggregate after a 0-2 win in Holland. Arsenal lined up like this . . .
-Almunia- -Sagna- -Djourou- -Gallas- -Clichy- -Walcott- -Fabregas-
