The competition and personal stories will be chronicled by Univision Network's popular weekly sports entertainment program, "República Deportiva" (Sports Republic).

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - William and Mary Tribe men's soccer players Nicolas Abrigo and Will Smith were honored by the Virginia Associate of Sports Information Directors (VaSID) on Thursday, earning All-State accolades.

Because of MLS' relative newness to the sports scene, MLS fans have more "ownership" in the league's success. Unlike fans of the NFL, MLB and other mainstream sports, fans of Major League Soccer have real concern about their league and its place on the sports landscape. Fans work hard to bring friends to games, introduce family to the sport and cheer for MLS teams in international competitions.

This is it folks! All the drama and tears and cheers have led us to the end of MLS playoffs. Most fans are left rueing squandered chances, bad decisions, and a lack of that intangible but often referenced "heart", but a few lucky fans get to experience the true excitement of their team in a MLS Cup. It's something you can only really feel when your team could win it all.

It is the time of year when votes are cast in Major League Soccer. These include the VW Most Valuable Player, Allstate Goalkeeper of the year Defender of the Year, Coach of the Year, referee awards and more (there are less with sponsors this year as compared to last year). We cast our votes earlier this week and will certainly report on the winners when they are announced.

With the rain pouring down in buckets, the boys and girls of the West Philadelphia Hurricanes Youth Soccer Club probably thought practice would be called for the day. Yet, when they arrived at the Shepard Recreation Center at 57th Street and Haverford Avenue for an impromptu indoor training session, they received an unexpected surprise.

Major League Soccer's Mid-summer classic went off in Harrison on Wednesday night before a (mostly) packed house at Red Bull Arena. We thought we would offer some random business observations on the pre-game festivities and the match itself. Prior to the game, the MLS sponsors were out in force, with an entire section of the stadium grounds devoted to the major MLS sponsors.

As a kid I wanted to do anything but play in goal. But I was the tallest kid on the team, and the kid's dad who coached the team thought that made the most sense. I don't remember ever encountering a goalkeeping coach, just being forced into the big clown gloves.

Taking time away from the game and going back to what is most important is a key aspect in growing the game in the United States. As role models and professionals, every player is subject to this responsibility, which should be expected while being in the public eye.

As the Philadelphia Union continue to grow as a club in Major League Soccer, increased attention is placed on the caliber of player development, particularly for homegrown players. It will not be long before the Zach Pfeffers and Jack McInerneys of today will be the elite level players on a U-18 or U-20 side for the Philadelphia Union, instead of beginning a career with the first team at 15 and 17 years old, respectively.
