Liverpool has been asked to be the opposition for the 2008 MLS All-Star Game in Toronto as part of
their American tour. The game seems to be designed perfectly for the club, as they will play in a
very red stadium that normally hosts a team sponsored by Carlsberg.
But the interest in soccer in Canada might not end at this one off match as Liverpool co-owner
George Gillett Jr.
Rumors have it that MLS has their eyes on four teams for the 2008 All-Star match in Toronto. Those
clubs, in no particular order, are Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Yes, the
All-Star game is a bit of a joke based more on marketing then anything else, but if it has to be
done (and it does), might as well get some top-level competition.
Last week we got the MLS First XI as voted on my fans, media, coaches and players. Today we got the
other seven members of the MLS All-Star team as coach Steve Nicol and MLS Commissioner Don Garber
announced their picks.
Steve Nicol went with Brian Ching (Houston Dynamo), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Ronnie O'Brien
(Toronto FC), Kevin Hartman (Kansas City Wizards) and Pablo Mastroeni (Colorado Rapids).
MLS has released their First XI list for the All-Star game on July 19 against Scottish Premier
League champions Celtic FC. These eleven players are not the starting lineup, just the players that
are selected by fans, players, coaches and the media. Coach Steve Nicol will pick five additional
players and Commissioner Don Garber will add two more.
Here is the list along with the points they earned from each voting catagory: Net
