WPS stars, execs and staff have all arrived in St. Louis for the WPS All-Star game this weekend.
Thought I'd drop a note to share the events of the weekend. (Karina LeBlanc is my inspiration for
posting something she blogged late last night after the All-Star Awards Dinner. Check out www.
You know what, there are some really interesting tidbits in this MLSnet preview. Whoever did it
deserved more pub than "MLSnet staff." (Hopefully it wasn't the same guy who put a pick of Jhon
Kennedy Hurtado up on the home page for this game; Kennedy was red-carded in the semifinal.)
Is anyone else the tiniest bit suspicious about the "We hate each other.
The Major League All-Star game started out originally as a traditional East vs West but switched
formats in 2002. Since then, the game is the top MLS players versus a club from another country.
The last few years have seen Chelsea, Celtic, West Ham, and Fulham all take on the MLS All-Stars.
The MLS side has never lost a match against an international opponent.

Hello everyone! Back again this week from "Across the Midwest Pitch."
Just want to give a shout out to the US Men's National Team for their Gold Cup performance and
silver medal. Obviously, the final wasn't the result we were looking for and not in the fashion we
were hoping (especially to Mexico), but looking at the big picture, everyone on the squad deserves
recognition for a successful tournament.
We have received an email from Joey Kearney who is a fellow Evertonian in Florida and is looking to
start an Orlando chapter.Joey has also emailed some photos of Everton taken in Salt Lake City at
the MLS All Stars game as well as one taken on a trip back home to England to see Everton in the FA
Cup Final.
On the eleventh episode of the Soccerlens Podcast, Stephen Darwin is joined by US soccer
enthusiasts Mark Fishkin and Lisa Eisenmenger to discuss MLS.
The show will be looking specifically at the structure of MLS and how the league can be
improved, MLS and it's connections with the English Premier League and there's even a chat about
the merits of cheerleaders!
For those who are on the west coast or are willing to travel to the west coast, there is an
interesting exhibition coming up on July 4th at the Los Angeles Coliseum as a team of South
American All Stars will be taking on a team of All Stars from the Rest of the World. You can click
on this link for more information, but judging by the list of players that are scheduled to attend
it should be a really fun match to go and see.
We wrote last week that Everton will be playing the MLS in this year's all-star game in Salt
Lake City.
In announcing the game MLS Commissioner Don Garber said "We are very excited about Everton FC
agreeing to be the opponent for the 2009 MLS All-Star Game. Everton is an elite European club that
features many world-class players".
The match was held held in memory of the 96 people who died as a result of the Hillsborough
disaster. The Liverpool Legends, comprising ex-Liverpool footballers, beat the All Stars, captained
by actor Ricky Tomlinson 3 -1.
Ian Rush, John Aldridge and Kenny Dalglish scored, with Teddy Sheringham hitting one for the All
Stars.
Kevin Souter was this week's winner of the poll for who should be interviewed this week. Wednesday
after practice Thad was able to talk to Souter. Souter talks about getting back onto the field and
the injury that hampered him from getting a chance to get onto the field sooner this year. He
talked about his connection to LA in that his first appearance ever was against LA as was his first
start this year.
Chicago Fire defender Bakary Soumare is replacing Brian Ching on the MLS All-Star Game roster.
Ching is being excused from the All-Star Game to recover from the CONCACAF Gold Cup, where he has
started for the U.S. men's national team.
Soumare is coming off an MLS Best XI season and will be making his first MLS All-Star Game
appearance.
SANDY, Utah Everton FC and the MLS All-Stars played to a 1-1 draw last night with Louis Saha
scoring for the English side and Brad Davis for the hosts. However, thanks to three saves in the
ensuing penalty kick session from American international goalkeeper Tim Howard, Everton held on for
a 4-3 shootout win.
Given very poor planning on my part, I will again miss the Rapids game this weekend. Two games in a
row, very poor form. So, I won't be posting a match report as the chances of me both finding a tv
in Philadelphia that may actually show it and be on the good side of my significant other are slim
to none.
The 80's All Stars Keeper - Howling mad Murdoch The Biggles Jacket wearing Nam nutnut will be ideal
in the No1 jersey. Taking orders from his old war time chum cum team manager, Mad Murdoch's aerial
ability is un-surpassed & his crazy antics and penchant for a cap has drawn comparisons with
Grobelar.
MLS announced Wednesday that Valencia Everton will be the club to take on the Major League
Soccer All Stars in this years midseason classic. And of course, that would mean the return of
Metro hero, turned National Team anchor, Timmy Howard!
Howard is arguably the most successful Major League Soccer export, not only keeping Everton as
one of the top teams overall for the Premiership for two years running, but more recently, single
handedly eliminating the Red Devils of Manchester from the FA Cup semifinals with a thrilling
penalty kick face off.

As always LD is an All-Star but this year there seems to be a real presence about him and his
performances on the international stage have a lot of people thinking he won't be in MLS much
longer. Great player!
JM
Wizards defender, Jimmy Conrad, will not be playing this Wednesday against Everton FC in Salt Lake
in the MLS All Star game, but Conrad will be there. Conrad has been named an "inactive" All Star
for the game. Basically, under the league's collective bargaining agreement, MLS still has to name
32 players as All Stars for bonus purposes.
Dominic Kinnear is excited for tonight, are you? (photo via MLS)
It is that time once again, the MLS All-Stars take on a club from the other side of the pond.
Feel the excitement? Yeah I honestly don't. Just like every year I get less and less excited about
this game, mostly because of the set up of the league taking on a club in preseason mode.

Opting not to clear their bench, Everton took the 2009 MLS All-Star Game on penalties after drawing

not star studded) managed to hold David Moyes side to a draw before the Toffees won the shoot out

A lot of folks this morning are calling for the end of the MLS All-Star game, or at least the
current format of it. While I am more in the ladder part of the calling I do not see this current
game going away at any point in the near future after what we saw last night.

Patrice Evra, who always flies the Manchester United flag, wants to make it clear that they're
all superstars at our club, and that Ronaldo's absence isn't the be all and end all.
"It is important to be clear that Ronaldo did not make Manchester United," said Evra.
"Ronaldo was never the star at Manchester United.

With all this fuss and bother over arranging simple football matches in Jakarta at the moment now
there is a possibility that the prestige friendly between an Indonesia All Stars and Manchester
United may be relocated with Samarinda in Kalimantan being suggested as a plan B.
I don't claim to have any inside channel to Old Trafford but it ain't rocket science to suggest
that there is no way United will consent to travelling to Samarinda.
The 2009 MLS All-Star game finally has an opponent. Tim Howard's Everton will be making the trip to
play Major League Soccer's All-Stars on July 29th at Real Salt Lake's Rio Tinto Stadium. MLS had
previously been linked with Spanish clubs as All-Star opposition. "We are very excited about
Everton FC agreeing to be the opponent for the 2009 MLS All-Star Game," MLS Commissioner Don Garber
said.

The MLS All Star voting is underway. This year Everton FC from England's top league is coming
over to get beat up on by our MLS All Stars! The MLS All Stars have historically done very well in
these all star games vs European teams. This time they will likely have to face former MLS
goalkeeper Tim Howard.

If you were eagerly looking forward to getting an in-person glimpse of your favorite

disappointed to know that the charity match has been cancelled.
The match, which was set to showcase stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry and Frank
Lampard on June 14th at Giants Stadium, was cancelled due to economic reasons.
