Oh yeah, right in the Ohio
Not only does Sunday night's "Centennial Match" friendly versus our friends the United States of
America (aka Canada's jaunty scarf) celebrate 100 Years of "greatness" under the CSA but it also
takes place nearly 200 years after The War of 1812's "Battle of York".
GOLD CUP: Canada fall at the death and USA overcomes finishing woes to advance - originally

There're tough losses and then there's what happened to Canada Tuesday night. Literally a
fraction away from securing a spot in the knockout stages Panama pulled off a sobering goal to
eliminate the Maple Leafs from the Gold Cup in the early game Tuesday night.
Fifteen minutes. That is all it took for the U.S. Men's National Team to turn Saturday's
embarrassment at the hands of Spain into nothing more than a bump in the road during an
international friendly.
When Jozy Altidore found the back of the net 15 minutes into the Americans' game against Canada
in Tuesday night's opening match of group play in the Gold Cup, everything that happened on the
field against Spain was forgotten.
The U.S. rebounded from its terrible display against Spain at the weekend to beat Canada 2-0 in
their opening Gold Cup match. Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey were the U.S. goal scorers.
The U.S. pressured Canada from the start as Bradley and Jones dominated the center of the pitch.
So it was no surprise when the U.
The United States opened their 2011 Gold Cup campaign with a convincing 2-0 win over Canada in
from of 28,209 at Ford Field in Detroit. The USA came out determined from the get go, using the
long ball early on and completely dominating the midfield with a tireless work rate. Canada had
nothing to offer in response as the US imposed their will over the Canucks and broke through in the
15th minute thanks to a Jozy Altidore strike.
In this edition of Major Link Soccer, I Timm Higgins will try my best not to poke bears, cause
twitter outrage or other such nonsense. Lets all cross our fingers shall we?
The Philadelphia Union have been under fire from their fan base most of this off season.
Recently on their official website CEO and Operating Partner Nick Sakiewicz pens a open letter of
sorts to the Unions fans.
The 2011 NASL season reached its halfway point this 4th of July weekend with plenty of fireworks
on the pitch. The weekend action, which included the unveiling of the new retro NASL official
soccer ball, consisted of plenty of holiday fireworks as the Carolina RailHawks won their 10th
straight match Sunday by shutting down the visiting Montreal Impact 2-0.
Carolina Railhawks 2, Montreal Impact 1 (NASL League Play)
The Railhawks can't seem to play a game in good weather. It was a rainy afternoon in Montreal,
where the Railhawks defeated the Impact 2-1 at Saputo Stadium. The Impact were coming off an
emotional high as they beat the New York Red Bulls in a friendly the previous Wednesday.
Canadian international forward Ali Gerba's first-half goal was the difference, as the Montreal
Impact held on for a 1-0 result over the New York Red Bulls in their friendly Wednesday night at
Saputo Stadium.
Gerba headed home a cross in the 37th minute for the game's only tally.
The Canadian championship final will be an all-MLS affair.
Toronto FC made quick work of FC Edmonton while Vancouver needed extra time to put away the
Montreal Impact in the final legs of their semifinal matchups Wednesday night.
Rookie Joao Plata set up Alan Gordon in the 21st minute for the lone goal in TFC's 1-0 victory
over Edmonton.
A rematch of last season's USSF Division 2 final headlines the debut weekend in the NASL.
The Carolina Railhawks welcome defending champions Puerto Rico Islanders as both teams look to
build upon last year's success with mostly rebuilt squads.
The second day of USSF D2 awards saw Ryan Pore walk away the big winner, as the league's leading
goal-scorer was also named the Second Division MVP on Thursday.
Pore carried most of Portland's offense throughout the 2010 season, and was also named a member
of the D2 Best XI.

US Soccer released today the USSF D2 Pro League Player of the Year,
Goalkeeper of the Year and Starting 11 awards voted on by a panel
of journalists comprised of members of print, television, radio and online media hailing from each
of the 12 clubs' local markets, as well as the general manager and head coach of each team.
The Carolina Railhawks became the latest USSF Division 2 to officially secure a playoff spot
over the weekend.
With only a handful of games remaining in second division play, Carolina's 4-2 win over
struggling Crystal Palace locked up the fifth playoff spot in postseason play.
For the first time in a long time, all 12 USSF D-2 will be in action this weekend.
With the playoff race creating pressure in almost every match, eyes will be on Rochester as the
Rhinos play host to the FC Tampa Bay Rowdies (7:00 p.m., Saturday).
Ali Gerba, the well-traveled Canadian international striker, was released in April of this year
after playing only eleven matches with Toronto FC. He wasn't out of work for long, however, as he
was signed in July by the Montreal Impact of the NASL. We sat down with Mr. Gerba, pictured below,
in Montreal to see how life was treating him in the NASL.

- Was TFC's recent upswing a carny trick or is their form closer to the performance put on in
Chicago last Sunday?
As the last few hours of August slip away, the signs of summer's end are upon us. Oooh, I've
gone all Robert Frost. Alas, (so highbrow!) the first leaves are beginning to fall, the sun is
setting that wee bit earlier... and of course Toronto FC is slipping out of the playoff
picture.
J Hutcherson writes of five things to look at following the US 2-0 victory over Canada in the
CONCACAF Gold Cup.
In the aftermath of the USA's clinical treatment of Canada in the opening night of Group C, we look
at five things to carry forward into the second set of games on the Gold Cup schedule.
All 12 rosters for the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup have been released and there is plenty of star
power set to be on display in the United States this summer.
Manchester United star Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez headlines the list of players who the
United States will be trying to beat for the Gold Cup trophy.
After all that chatter, Dwayne De Rosario will be representing Canada this summer.
The New York Red Bulls midfielder highlights manager Stephen Hart's roster for the CONCACAF Gold
Cup, along with five other MLS players. Attacking talent Simeon Jackson, who spearheaded Norwich
City's promotion to the English Premier League also made the cut for Canada, which will open the
Gold Cup against the United States on June 7 in Detroit.
With the eight playoff teams in USSF D-2 now set, determining those first round matches is the
only thing left to resolve.Â
Vancouver and Montreal will get one more chance to face off (Friday, 10:30 p.m.) before the
Canadian rivalry takes a year off in 2011 as the Whitecaps make the transition to MLS -- that is,
unless the two sides meet up in the postseason.
With a 4-2 loss Wednesday night to Miami FC, the dim USSF D-2 playoff aspirations of first-year
club A.C. St. Louis were finally extinguished.Â
Abe Thompson proved to be too much for the St. Louis defense to handle in Miami, netting a hat
trick and seeing Miami to their third straight win of the season, eliminating any remaining hope of
postseason action for the visitors.
Two of the top teams in USSF Division 2 squared off Sunday evening, as the Austin Aztex
concluded a swing to the Northwest to take on Vancouver. An entertaining 2-2 draw showed how little
their was between two the league's finest.
The host Whitecaps have to feel the worse off after this one, failing to hold on to two separate
leads -- going ahead through Cornelius Stewart's 14th minute strike, then again thanks to new
signing Ridge Mobulu in the 52nd minute.
Austin and Rochester keep on rolling through USSF D-2 opposition.
In upstate New York, the Rhinos kept a firm hold on first place in both the overall standings
and the USL Conference, defeating Miami FC by a 3-1 score.Â
Down in Texas, the Aztex were not going to be outdone, holding off a comeback by the Carolina
Railhawks to win 3-2.
