In one of my less busy moments at work this morning I wondered aloud why the Albirex Niigata replica shirt costs 98 SGD was nearly twice as expensive as the Geylang United one which costs 50 SGD.
Koh Mui Tee, who is the Albirex Niigata manager, tells me that it is down to demand. They shift about 150 shirts a year while Geylang United manage a fraction of that.

I have been most remiss in my coverage of the SLeague in recent weeks and I do apologise for that. I hope to take some games in before the end of the season though.
So how do we stand as we enter the final furlong? I think it's fair to say it's a two horse race as the table shows;

Four games remaining and a two point difference make for another exciting climax to the SLeague.

The 2011 J. League kicks off on March 5, and it looks set to be another bumper season.
A handful of marquee match-ups dominate the opening day, including the Osaka derby between Gamba and Cerezo and a regional showdown between promoted Ventforet Kofu and Jubilo Iwata.
Defending champions Nagoya Grampus kick off their campaign with a tricky home fixture against Yokohama F.

A Singapore newspaper is reporting that of last night's near 2,000 attendance for the Albirex Niigata v Etoile game, only 490 were paying spectators! The rest were freebies, media and security personnel! And ballboys.

But you know what? That official attendance doesn't actually reflect the number of people who actually went to the stadium.

With 10 games gone SLeague new boys Tanjong Pagar United have yet to light up the compeition. Indeed, the opposite is true; they have become the whipping boys of the league as a team combined of young players with the odd older head struggle to make any kind of impression beyond a team to boost your goal difference against.

It hasn't been much of a season for Young Lions in the SLeague so far. They have just one win and three goals from their opening eight games. The early season circus of Pele etc has been forgotten as the season has now become one defeat after another; the latest coming in the last minute against title challengers Home United.

With the ongoing campaigning to the running up to the General Elections, it's inevitable to see various S.League stadiums being selected as venues for the contesting parties to hold their mass rallies.
According to sleague.com, the selected stadiums are Bedok, Bishan, Choa Chu Kang, Clementi, Jurong East (pictured below, courtesy of Albirex Niigata[S]), Jurong West, Tampines, Toa Payoh and Woodlands Stadiums, while two stadiums (Hougang and Queenstown) were also named as the "reserve" venues by the police.

Well I can't see any Indonesian teams being allowed to compete in the ACL in the future. It just isn't a priority for them and long flights overseas aren't exciting when you spend half the season on planes anyway.

SINGAPORE, 31 JULY 2011: Albirex Niigata (S) FC emerged as the 2011 League Cup champions after a pulsating match at Jalan Besar Stadium against Hougang United FC that ended in a penalty shootout.

The curtain raiser for the 2011 League Cup Final was the 3rd place playoff between Tampines Rovers FC and Home United FC.

Ahmad Latiff (pictured above in yellow jersey) delivered the sucker punch at the last kick of the game to help Tampines Rovers beat Balestier Khalsa 1-0 at Toa Payoh Stadium.
While the Tigers had a Mark McGough's goal disallowed which they claimed the Aussie's effort had crossed the goal line before Lions defender Fahrudin Mustafic cleared for safety in the first half.

Albirex Niigata's flood of goals dried up last night at Jalan Besar when they could only manage a draw, a result that sees them move second.

Albirex Niigata are in line for a Singapore treble after they squuezed by Hougang United in their Singapore Cup semi final last night.
The game ended 1-1 on 90 minutes meaning the teams had to go into extra time for the right to face Home United in the final in November. Yosuke Saito gave the White Swans the lead after five minutes of extra time but their hearts must have skipped a few beats when prolific scorer Shotaro Ihata was red carded minutes later.

With just about five games remaining in the SLeague it appears Home United are in pole position with a five point cushion over second played Tampines Rovers who have played a game less.
Last year's champions Etoile are out of the race, 10 points behind the leaders but then they did lose five points after getting involved in a brawl with Hougang United earlier in the season.

To coin a well-known footballing phrase, it's squeaky bum time in two of Asia's biggest leagues.

In Japan the title will go down to a last day showdown with any one from Kashiwa Reysol, Nagoya Grampus Eight and Gamba Osaka all capable of winning the championship. Kashiwa currently hold the advantage of topping the table with 69 points from 33 games whilst Nagoya and Osaka trail the leaders by just one and two points respectively with one round of matches to be played next weekend.

Intrigued by the nominations for Supporters of the Year in the SLeague. Normally SAFFC win it with their neo super hero style outfits and dangerously young cheerleaders and of course they are in the running again this year.
Looking at contenders this year, SAFFC, Gombak, Albirex Niigata and Young Lions, you get the feeling that for all the rhetoric that comes out of the FAS about rebranding the game it's all just same old, same old.

Home United may have won the Singapore Cup but the SLeague title is the one they wanted and they missed out by one point to Tampines. They have already started strengthening their squad for the new season, which I believe begins in February or March, with a familiar face returning to Lion City and a hot talent from last season.

Kashiwa Reysol secured the J-League title and a place in the FIFA Club World Cup as the host nation's representatives following a climatic finish to the season in Japan this weekend. The title triumph was all the more remarkable given that the team had only won promotion from the Japanese second division last season.
