The SLeague begins in about 12 days time, no fixture list yet, so I thought I'd scour some of the
teams websites and find out just what they are doing to entice supporters.
Albirex Niigata have one of the better sites and club shops in the SLeague if somewhat overpriced.
Adults can purchase season tickets at a cost of $40 (all prices in Singapore dollars obviously)
which is pretty good value when you consider match tickets cost $6 a game (all prices for adults).
After flirtations with Masahiro Fukasawa, Kimiaki Saitou and Yamada Takuya, it seems that Thai Port
have finally landed a Japanese player. The well informed English language Chonburi website is
reporting that defender Yoshiaki Marayuma has joined Port from 'The Sharks'. The 35 year old has a
wealth of experience having played for Yokohama Marinos, Albirex Niigata and Vegalta Sendai in
J-League 1.

SHORT SCRIBE OF THE GAME
Just back from Hougang Stadium and saw Sengkang Punggol crushed out of the Singapore Cup by Albirex
Niigata (S).
1-0 was the scoreline and Ryuta Hayashi scored the only goal in the 50th minute and Shahir Hamzah,
again, was sent off by referee Sukhbir Singh in the 81st minute.

SINGAPORE, 9 February 2010 – Of the top four S.League clubs to receive a bye to the
quarter-finals, Home United, Gombak United and Tampines Rovers find themselves facing with a
challenging League Cup journey after they were drawn in the same half of the competition's
quarter-finals.
Old bugger in this hotel I stay at in Singapore always has a natter with me about football but it
has taken him a while to understand that I really ain't interested in how Liverpool or Chelsea get
on.
Just got back from the game in Hougang tonight and he's sitting at reception with a big grin on his
face.

Japan coach Takeshi Okada decided to go with experience this time around as he announced his 23-man
squad for South Africa.
As expected the nucleus of the team will consist of its European-based players such as Catania's
Takayuki Morimoto, Wolfburg's Makoto Hasebe, Grenoble's Daisuke Matsui, and CSKA Moscow's Keisuke
Honda.

Arema take on Bontang later on today knowing they need four points from their last three games to

With Persipura breathing down their neck Robert Alberts men know anything less than three points

before kick off.

Not that long ago, I came across one posting from an online forum.
The posting on the online forum detailed a fan's frustration over the state of the game in this
country, with one of her grouses targetted the presence of the feeder squads of both Albirex
Niigata and Beijing Guoan, which she felt had deprived some local talents from playing at the top
level.

After a four month hiatus the Singapore Cup returns today with Tampines Rovers playing Balestier
Khalsa. Teams in bold are Singaporean!
Last years runners up, Bangkok Glass, are involved in the tie of the round against South Melbourne.
In the last round the Thai side absolutely tore apart SAFFC defeating them 5-3 at the once
impregnable fortress (one for any literary/history buffs!
The Football Association of Singapore's much trumpeted Strategic Plan has taken another kicking
with news that the city state would rather keep foreign teams in its 12 team SLeague than enter the
Asian Football Confederation's Champions League.
The already uncompetitive league, where 25% of the teams, three foreign and Young Lions, would get
no tangible reward, Asian club football, were they to win the league prefers to keep inviting the
likes of Beijing Guoan and Albirex Niigata reasoning that different styles of football keeps things
interesting.

Not that long ago, I got a SMS (in green font) from a friend of my that he shared with me his
rating of the S.League since the inauguration in 1996...
Attendances based on my memory
- 96 Tiger high,
- 96 Pioneer low,
- 97 average,
- 98 recession,
- 99 good,
- 00 average,
- 01 good but media coverage totally destroyed during SEA Games,
- 02 starting to have unusual results
- 03 penalty shootouts average N later died off
- 04 league reduced in teams, gd with jap albirex in,
- 05 gd with paya lebar in, young lions N balestier performed well,
- 06 young lions did well in FA Cup, sporting afrique some interest but fade away after payment
issues,
- 07 tiger cup success, but liaoning destroyed it
- 08 poor
- 09 bad
- 10 worst
I asked my friend if he would like to be quoted and acknowledged, he politely declined, but I
thought this is something rather interesting and it's not those-kind-of-thesis-type of article as
it's simple and hit the nail kind of review.
