Xabi gone, time to spend spend spend!
Liverpool will use £17 million of the £30m they have raised from the sale of Xabi
Alonso to Real Madrid to sign Alberto Aquilani, the Roma midfielder. Officials at Anfield also plan
to meet with Valencia this week to discuss a deal for David Silva, while a second offer for Sylvain
Distin also remains a possibility.

Lucas Leiva, the new Ronaldinho? The next Tom Brady?
22 year old Lucas Leiva will be handed the keys to the Ferrari that is Liverpool's central midfield
this weekend against Tottenham Hotspur.
The Brazilian should start in the centre of midfield in front of Mascherano and just behind Gerrard
after manager Rafa Benitez labelled the youngster the best player on the team in pre-season.
Liverpool's crushing defeats to Sunderland and Lyon are undoubtedly devastating blows to the club's
trophy ambitions. Clearly, the recurring problems that have plagued Liverpool under Rafa Benitez
are wreaking havoc once again. As such, if the club is to recover and salvage something from this
campaign, it is imperative that important changes are made NOW.
What is going on?

Reports surfacing today suggest that Rafa Benitez and Javier Mascherano are going to clash over
the Argentine midfielders demands for a new improved contract, something our boss is unlikely to
give in to, mainly because the Liverpool boss doesn't believe the former West Ham man deserves an
increased offer given his very average start to the season.
Who is Alberto Aquilani? That is the question many Liverpool supporters have been asking during the
past week after it emerged the Roma midfielder was being lined up as a replacement for Xabi
Alonso.
Only true Serie A aficionados would claim to possess anything more than just a sketchy knowledge of
the 25-year-old Italy international who is poised to complete a £20million move to Anfield.
Only a fraction of fee payable now.
Contrary to all the rubbish printed by the British press regarding a 20 million
pound deal for Alberto Aquilani, Roma have themselves revealed the true extent of the payment
structure for the Italian (both to the stock exchange as well as their own official
site).
Decent source suggests the deal is complete.
"Is that Rafa on the phone?"
Liverpool have signed Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani, according to the latest reports
from Spain.
Marca claims Roma have accepted an €18million bid for the Italian midfielder.
Fast improving Frenchman on Rafa's radar
A number of Bundesliga clubs have stepped up their interest in Marseille's playmaker
Mathieu Valbuena who is a target for a number of Premier League clubs including Liverpool, Everton,
Aston Villa and West Ham. Reports in both the German and French press suggest Hertha Berlin,
Hamburg and Schalke are ready to make formal bids as interest in the diminutive Frenchman continues
to grow.
Liverpool's depressing defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge could have (and should have) been
avoided, but as is so often the case, Rafa Benitez's decisions conspired to adversely affect
Liverpool yet again.
The most galling thing about the defeat is that the game was definitely winnable.
So, John Terry is apparently going to stay at Chelsea. That shouldn't exactly come as a surprise
to anyone, though a few Chelsea fans might have worried themselves into a frenzy over the last
several days about the possibility of losing their beloved captain to Manchester City.
Now that that situation looks to be resolved (possibly, maybe, I think.
Good player but probably not worth such a large valuation.
Steven Defour has joined Roma's Alberto Aquilani on the list of candidates to replace
Xabi Alonso at the heart of Liverpool's midfield and has admitted his interest in an £18m Anfield
move.
While Real Madrid have yet to match Liverpool's valuation on Alonso, Defour, 21, said: ‘I have an
agreement with Standard Liege that I could go to a top club, and Liverpool fit the
bill.
When Rafa Benitez splashed out £17 million on Roma sensation Alberto
Aquilani, you could fully understand Liverpool supporters' optimism that their
Champions League winning coach had taken their team another giant step closer to winning
their first league title in nearly twenty years.
According to John Arne Riise, new Liverpool signing Alberto Aquilani carries a greater goal threat
than the recently departed Xabi Alonso. Whilst that would clearly be fantastic for the team, is it
actually true?
In an interview, Riise stated:
"He's [Aquilani] is really good on the ball, with good passing, good movement, he works hard and is
a good professional".
Well that didn't take long, did it? Xabi Alonso was sold today for approximately 30 million pounds
(which was a shocking gain, if you ask me... which is different than the "shocking" transfers we
are usually involved in, like Owen for 8 mil), yet we have gone ahead and brought in Alberto
Aquilani on the [.
Of all the players in all the world, why does Rafa Benitez seem intent on gambling a reputed £20m
of the club's money on an injury prone midfielder who has barely managed 27 league starts in the
last 3 years?
Liverpool released an official statement today earlier today confirming the club's interest in
Alberto Aquilani, and Rafa Benitez was very complimentary indeed:
"Alberto is a very good player who has a winning mentality and great experience.
How good of an investment is bringing in an highly-talented but oft-injured player for 20m? Rafa
Benitez won't find that out for a month or two, what with new signing Alberto
Aquilani on the shelf for the start of the season.
Liverpool aren't the only Premier League side bringing in a big-name Italian import this summer,
as West Ham could be set to bring in one of their own before the window closes at the end of this
month.
La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that a delegation from Liverpool has arrived in Rome this morning to
offer around €16m for the services of Alberto Aquilani. The highly rated Italian playmaker is a
potential replacement for Xabi Alonso, who...
Why replace a inspirational visionary midfielder with a distinctly average injury prone
Italian?
Surely we would not sell our most influential, consistent and best(?) player of last season and
replace him with an injury prone Italian that at best is a good player, no, not brilliant, world
class or amazing he is a better player of an average Roma team and his injury record is awful, to
top it all off he is isn't even into full pre-season training as he has just come back from holiday
(sorry didn't mean that) no you guessed it an injury!
All the stuff being covered outside the unfriendly confines of the award winning Dirty
Tackle...
After receiving a three-year contract extension from Chelsea yesterday, Didier Drogba put out
the above video statement supposedly directed at the fans. But between the bedroom eyes and
intimate tone, it sounds more like a message for his special lady friend.
The moment all Liverpool fans have been waiting for came last night when Alberto Aquilani made his
competitive debut for the club. (hurrah!) Here is footage of all the moments in which he was
involved during the game.

Liverpool were eliminated from the League Cup due to a 2-1 loss sustained at Arsenal's Ashburton
Grove home, but Rafael Benitez has insisted that the defeat will not dilute the feel-good factor
that engulfed Anfield following the Manchester United win at the weekend.
Pass-master Fran Merida opened the scoring in the first-half with a long-range effort, but the
visitors levelled the game with an equally impressive shot from Emiliano Insua.
Since his seventeen millions pounds move over the summer, Alberto Aquilani's return to fitness has
been eagerly anticipated by the Anfield faithful. Rafael Benitez has been relentlessly criticised
in signing the 25-year-old midfield maestro, with the Italian's career being blighted by injuries.
The ‘little prince' is a replacement for firm fans favourite Xabi Alonso, who [.

Yossi Benayoun's creative contribution over the last year proves that it is in Liverpool's best
interests to start him as often as possible, but despite this, he is STILL in and out of the first
team. What more does Benayoun have to do to join the list of automatic starters?
I know I've made this point before, but I feel it needs to be made again.
Rafa's summer signing is finally fit and able and here he is in reserve team action.

Yesterday, I posted a list of eleven reasons why I believe Liverpool have struggled this season.
Today, it's time to look to forward positively and come up with a way out of the current mess. Yes,
things are bleak, but I do not think that the season is over. In fact, I actually think Liverpool
can still put in a title challenge, but only if certain changes are made and previous mistakes are
not repeated.

The Premier League is back, and while the World Cup is still top of mind
(especially for those Irish and French fans), the greatest league in the world is back from a two
week hiatus. Let's get to it:
I.
A few hours ago, Alberto Aquilani touched down at Heathrow. Pies was there, camera in hand, to snap
the Italian. He giggled like a girl. Too many G&Ts on the flight perhaps?...
The new Premier League season is less than a week away, and Liverpool's pre-season form has
unfortunately been nothing to crow about. This is how our pre-season friendlies went. Liverpool

So much for Fortress Anfield! Even at this early stage, Liverpool's crushing home defeat to Aston
Villa is a devastating blow to the club's title ambitions. The problem? Rafa Benitez's
one-dimensional tactics and lack of an effective plan B. It's clear that if Liverpool are to
recover and mount a serious title, important changes need to be made NOW.
Much to the delight of Liverpool fans, Daniel Agger, Alberto Aquilani and Fabio Aurelio will all be
ready to start soon, and while we all know what positions Agger and Aquilani will play upon their
return, Aurelio's position and influence on the team is more of a mystery. New Liverpool-Kop writer
Bikram Rana takes a look at how the infludential Brazilian will fit into the team.
Liverpool v Arsenal: win or kiss Champions League goodbye - originally posted on

Liverpool fans are on a high after winning the Carling Cup last weekend, with Kenny Dalglish and
Steven Gerrard heralding the triumph as the start of a new era of success for the club. Whether
this season is a success or not may well depend on the outcome of this Saturday's fixture against
Arsenal however.
Alberto Aquilani could be Liverpool's replacement for Xabi Alonso, but Roma won't part with him for
less than £18m.
The Reds are looking at alternatives after Xabi Alonso reportedly requested a transfer to Real
Madrid this week.
According to Sky Sport Italia, Rafa Benitez has already sent his men to ask Roma about Aquilani's
availability.
Liverpool are in negotiations with Roma concerning the potential switch of Alberto Aquilani to
Anfield, adding further fuel to the speculation that Xabi Alonso is set to depart the club
soon.
Reds manager Rafa Bentiez has reportedly told Alonso, who continues to be linked with Real Madrid,
that he must get his future sorted out by the end of the week, but it seems a possible replacement
for the Basque has already been lined up.
According to Rome-based daily Il Messaggero, Italian international midfielder Alberto Aquilani is
ready to turn his back on his hometown club Roma and commit his long-term future to Premier League
giants Liverpool.
‘Il Principino' has allegedly agreed a five-year contract with the Anfield outfit worth €4
million-per-season.
