A selection of talent from Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester United, Chelsea, Everton,
Stoke City, Burnley, Sunderland and Aston Villa who should get more in the way of plaudits.
Yossi Benayoun (Liverpool)
A player who only seems to get his chance when someone is out injured or badly off form.
In January 2001, Gerrard Houllier signed one of Europe's most renowned and exciting creative
players. Liverpool fans everywhere rejoiced at the prospect of having such a rare talent in the
team, the ideal player to complement Michael Owen and Robbie Fowler. Joy quickly turned to
frustration though as Houllier criminally underused the player and inexplicably wasted his
considerable talent.
With Liverpool's well documented financial woes causing major problems, has every avenue of revenue
generation been explored and implemented by the club? David Clarke doesn't think so.
It could just be my age, but I know that throughout my time as a football fan, I have always
dreamed of playing for Liverpool and pulling on one of the club's prestigious shirts, like the
number ‘7', ‘9' or'10'.
A player who gives 100% and could represent the difference between success and failure at
Anfield.
Someone remarked to me, midway through last term, whilst I saw in my Anfield seat that Yossi
Benayoun is a player that just about everyone values, except for Rafa Benitez. Now whilst the
statement was a little over the top it did have some resonance in reality and hopefully now our
boss realises just how important the Israeli utility man can be for the club.
It has emerged that Albert Riera had a bust-up with Rafa Benitez over being left on the bench for
the first three games of the season. Was Riera right to feel aggrieved?
Talking to Spanish publication AS, Riera revealed:
"I didn't play the first game because I started training late after the Confederations Cup, like
[Pepe] Reina and [Fernando] Torres.
Albert Riera has dismissed talk that he could have joined Barcelona in the summer, insisting that
he wanted to stay at "the biggest club in Europe".
The Catalan winger was linked with a move to Camp Nou as the Blaugrana sought a player to compete
with Thierry Henry down the left, but nothing materialised.
Liverpool winger Albert Riera has told Spanish publication AS of a bust-up he had with manager
Rafael Benitez and confirmed his anger at failing to start the first three games of the season for
the Merseysiders.
"I didn't play the first game because I started training late after the Confederations Cup, like
[Pepe] Reina and [Fernando] Torres," he said.
Liverpool winger Albert Riera has dismissed rumours that his future at Anfield is in doubt by
playing down a bust-up with boss Rafa Benitez.
Summer speculation had linked the Spain international with a move to Barcelona, and he has since
struggled to earn a regular place in the Reds' first team.
Rafa names his European Squad
Liverpool have named a 28-man squad for the Champions League group stage.
The Reds will kick off their European campaign at home to Debreceni VSC on September 16 before
travelling to Italy to face Fiorentina.
A double header with Lyon will then follow ahead of a trip to Debreceni VSC.

Winger has until January to prove himself worthy of a first team spot otherwise he may have to
leave to cement his World Cup hopes.
Liverpool forward Ryan Babel has to force himself into a regular first team spot at
Anfield, according to Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk, or his chances of representing his
country at next summer's World Cup finals in South Africa will disappear.
Benitez makes it very clear to this pair that they both have plenty to prove.
Babel has revealed he would be interested in a loan move to Ajax when the transfer
window reopens in January, while Riera made only his first start of the campaign at Bolton last
weekend.
Benitez insists both players will get chances to shine over the coming months and that it will
then be down to them to seize the opportunities which come their way.
Going to the game I started thinking to myself: how is it that I'm always tense before a match?
Whilst everyone around me was confidently predicting 5 or 6 nil wins, I was praying that Debrecen
wouldn't cause some surprise.
Forty five minutes into the game and my fears were being fulfilled.
It's crunch time for the talented Dutchman.
Liverpool winger Ryan Babel admits he may have to consider a loan move to former club
Ajax in January to boost his World Cup hopes.
Babel has struggled to make a sustained impact since joining Liverpool from Ajax two years ago
and was recently challenged to take his game up a level by manager Rafa Benitez.
Vicente Del Bosque Spain's head manager chooses his squad for Belgium and Estonia qualifiers for

Big losses to Spurs and Villa are not what Rafa Benitez had in mind when the season began. The
pundits were pegging Liverpool to win the Premiership. The stuttering start has taken its toll and
there are rumours that the Reds dressing room atmosphere is less salubrious nowadays.
Rafa had gotten into a well publicized spat before with Steven Gerrard who looked like a shadow
of himself in the Spurs match but it is Ryan Babel who is getting the business end of the stick and
was singled out for the team's pathetic display.
Rafa Benitez has dismissed any talk of Ryan Babel leaving Liverpool in the January transfer window
to join Ajax on loan and called on the striker to prove himself at Anfield.
Babel has expressed a desire to return to Holland in order to improve his hopes of making the Dutch
World Cup squad but Benitez maintained his international place could be secured while playing for
the Reds.
Top notch youngster benefiting from regular run in Boro side.

An exodus of a number of Middlesbrough's first-team players was inevitable following
their relegation to the Championship, but manager Gareth Southgate hopes he can keep hold of the
club's star players for the foreseeable future.
Dirk Kuyt's 12th goal in 35 Champions League games for Liverpool saw the Anfield men claim an
opening Group E victory but there was nothing to suggest a Madrid final in May is on the cards.
The Dutchman is now Liverpool's third-highest scorer in this competition and they were more than
thankful for his eventual winner in the final seconds of the first half.
Dirk Kuyt's first half effort handed Liverpool an unconvincing 1 – 0 win over battling
Debrecen at Anfield.
Boss Rafa Benitez, celebrating his 300th game in charge of Liverpool, named an unchanged side to
the one that beat Burnley 4 – 0 on Saturday – but it was the Hungarian champions that came
closest to taking a shock lead, Peter Czvitkovics testing Pepe Reina with a stinging drive.
Ask any observer to pinpoint a weakness in Liverpool's squad, and it won't take long before
conversation gravitates around a familiar failing.
In Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard, Rafael Benitez boasts perhaps the most devastating attack
partnership in Europe.
But beyond the fearsome duo, the Spaniard does not appear to have the wealth of striking options
available to many Premier League rivals.
Stevie G and Fernando Torres link-up again as they did last season.
Xavier Mascherano and Lucas play in midfield, while Albert Riera drops to tne bench today.
Team in full: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Skrtel, Insua, Kuyt, Mascherano, Lucas, Benayoun, Gerrard,
Torres.
Liverpool winger Albert Riera believes the Confederations Cup played a part in their stuttering
start to the season.
The Reds are getting their season back on track with four wins on the trot after losing two of
their opening three Premier League games, the same number of defeats they suffered throughout the
whole of last season.
Liverpool will be without midfielders Javier Mascherano and Yossi Benayoun for Tuesday's Champions
League Group E clash with Fiorentina.
Mascherano is sick and Benayoun picked up a leg injury against Hull in the 6-1 thrashing of Hull on
Saturday.
Mascherano's absence means winger Albert Riera is likely to start.
It's one of the most tiresome cliches in football these days, yet one that most in the public
eye can unilaterally agree on. Liverpool, they say, are a team of two players. No argument. G&T,
Stevie & Nando, Gerrard & Torres.
Like the zonal marking debate, no conversation about Liverpool is complete without it.
The champagne is likely to find a different home but Yossi Benayoun is here to stay.
The teetotal midfielder deservedly left Anfield with the man of the match bubbly on Saturday after
running Burnley ragged.
Benayoun has had to battle to make the grade at Liverpool since he arrived from West Ham two years
ago.
Not good enough. That is pretty much all I have to say about this match. The Reds did a great
job of maintaining possession and limiting the opportunities their opponents had, but were
horrendous when it came to accuracy in passing and shots taken. 10 corner kicks, 25 shots taken,
and we managed a single goal.
Liverpool striker Fernando Torres scored a brilliant hat-trick to blow away struggling Hull at
Anfield.
The Spain striker scored twice in the first half either side of Geovanni's equaliser and added a
third soon after the interval.
Captain Steven Gerrard scored a fourth just before the hour and substitute Ryan Babel added two
late goals as Liverpool made it four league wins - including 16 goals - in succession.
Although Liverpool started the new season with a disappointing two losses from their
first three matches, football fans know that with a fit and in-form Fernando Torres,
Liverpool possess a player who can drag them to the summit no matter how tall the order.
Torres' superb treble against this year's whipping boys Hull City, his fourth for
Liverpool and third in the Premiership, thrusts Rafa's men emphatically
back into the mix for silverware and reminds football cynics of Liverpool's threat.
As Liverpool transformed itself into an unstoppable juggernaut at the end of last season, one of
the primary factors was the dazzling form of Yossi Benayoun. This season, it is crucial that
someone else emerges from the pool of inconsistent and underachieving talent currently in the squad
and follows in the little midfielder's footsteps.
