Rafael Benitez is confident the signing of Espanyol midfielder Albert Riera will finally be
completed on the last day of .
I don't really know too much about either player that Liverpool and Everton signed on the transfer
deadline day, but I'll give my comments based upon what I've read.
Liverpool seemed to get the player they wanted in Albert Riera, a left winger who should provide a
lot of ammunition for Fernando Torres, Robbie Keane, and the rest of Liverpool's goal scorers.
Steve Finnan has revealed that Liverpool's Spanish players convinced him to come to Espanyol.
The Republic of Ireland international made the switch to Espanyol on deadline day as Albert Riera
travelled in the opposite direction to Anfield.
Finnan admitted last week that the transfer had come 'out of the blue' but he decided it would be a
good move after speaking to the likes of Jose Reina, Alvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso.
Liverpool certainly raised their game today with a historic 2-1 win against arch rivals Manchester
United in an entertaining game. Watch the video highlights of the goals here. It was an impressive
team performance from Liverpool who definitely seemed more up for the game than a Manchester United
side that seemed lethargic and on the backfoot [.
Following Albert Riera's timely arrival at Liverpool on the last day of the transfer window, Rafa
Benitez finally has two good wide players to deploy in his line-up who he can trust to produce
excellent performances consistently.
Ryan Babel can be played on either flank, but now that the left-footed Riera has turned up he
should be placed on the right-hand side of Liverpool's previously rigid midfield.
Notable arrivals: Albert Riera (Espanyol), Peter Gulacsi (MTK Hungaria), Vitor Flora, Robbie Keane
(Tottenham), David Ngog (PSG), Philipp Degen (Borussia Dortmund), Andrea Dossena (Udinese), Diego
Cavalieri (Palmeiras), Vincent Lucas Weijl (AZ Alkmaar), Emmanuel Mendy (Murcia Deportivo). Notable
departures: Andriy Voronin.
So Rafa ended the summer transfer window with a new winger signing in the form of Espanyol's Albert
Riera, but should he have opted for one of these three instead of the former Manchester City
loanee? Don't forget to check out Online Football Manager! Ricardo Quaresma Derided for filling too
many rumour mill .
A lot has been written about Albert Rieira since he joined Liverpool in the final hours of the
transfer window but most of it was based on his time at Manchester City which, given that it was a
bit back and a totally different situation, doesn't really amount to much.
So instead we've asked someone who has seen him play fairly regularly in recent years, a guy (I
think) who goes by the pseudonym of Striker and who writes Spanish Football Sports, one of the best
blogs about Spanish football around.
Liverpool have signed Brazilian striker Vitor Flora on a free transfer.
The 18-year-old spent last season playing in his homeland with Botafogo and has signed a contract
until 2010.
He holds an Italian passport so he does not require a work permit, however, he will need to gain
international clearance before playing for the Reds.
ALBERT RIERA is hoping to repeat his first experience of English football by helping Rafael Benitez
finally break his Manchester United hoodoo.
The Spain international left-winger was unveiled at Melwood yesterday after arriving from Espanyol
on Monday's transfer deadline day for an initial £5.

I remember watching Albert Riera playing for Manchester City a couple from times.
Back then I wouldn't have paid you air miles for him.
But I also watched him in La Liga for Espanyol last year and he seemed to have improved a great
deal. And he clearly benefited from playing every week, so if Rafael Benitez really sees him as the
solution to his left-sided problem then he must give him a run of games.
Republic Of Ireland defender Steve Finnan has admitted that his transfer from Liverpool to Espanyol
took him by surprise.
One of the more eye-catching transfers of this season's deadline day saw Irish international Steve
Finnan join La Liga stalwarts Espanyol on a two-year deal.
The name of Finnan was added to the transfer that saw Albert Riera move in the opposite direction,
after Finnan lost his place in the Liverpool first team.
Rafael Benitez, previously renowned for his rotation policy, has indicated that Fernando Torres
will remain one of his "untouchables" despite the goals drying up for the Spain striker.
The Liverpool manager, who was left frustrated by Saturday's goalless draw against Stoke City at
Anfield, argued that the 24-year-old will be better off playing his way back to full sharpness
rather than resting.
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez thinks that Espanyol midfielder Albert Riera will be at Anfield by the
end of the day. The Espanyol midfielder is expected to make the move for a fee of around
£8million. The deal for Riera is...
Liverpool have this evening completed the signings of Brazilian striker Vitor Flora and Spanish
winger Albert Riera. Flora arrives at Anfield on a free transfer from Botafogo and Riera has
completed his £8 million move from La Liga side Espanyol after weeks of speculation over his
future.
Flora, 18, has an Italian passport and consequently didn't need a work permit to move to Liverpool.
Rafael Benitez confirmed the signing of Albert Riera from Espanyol.

New signing Albert Riera has revealed he will thrive on the challenge of creating goalscoring
chances for 'one of the best strikers in the world'.
Firstly Albert, there was interest in you from a number of clubs so why was Liverpool your
number one choice?
I had a clear idea from the first time Espanyol told me there were some offers.
Rafael Benitez today praised Albert Riera's qualities to reassure fans who have judged him

Defiant Stoke stopped unbeaten Liverpool in their tracks at Anfield with a magnificent rearguard
action.
Liverpool dominated throughout, had close on 70% possession, but just could not find a way past
goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen and his outstanding defenders.
Stoke play to their strengths - being direct and physical - but they deserved their day in the sun.

FERNANDO TORRES is set to miss Liverpool's meeting with Manchester United after he suffered a
hamstring tear at Villa Park yesterday.
The Spanish striker, who sustained the injury after half an hour of the goalless draw with Aston
Villa, will undergo a scan to assess the extent of the damage today.
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez was satisfied with the point his side secured away to Aston Villa,
but believes his men need to improve their final ball if they are to challenge for a top-two
finish.
In a drab affair at Villa Park, both teams lacked potency in the final third as Robbie Keane,
Martin Laursen and John Carew spurned the only real clear-cut chanced of the game.
Both Andriy Voronin and Steve Finnan have left Liverpool today for Hertha Berlin and Espanyol
respectively but still there is no sign of Reds target Albert Riera completing his move to the
club. The Espanyol midfielder has been linked with a move to Anfield all summer and it is only now
that Liverpool are getting their skates on to sign him.
Liverpool have signed Spain winger Albert Riera from Espanyol for an undisclosed fee.
The 26-year-old has signed a four-year contract at Anfield after choosing Rafael Benitez's side
over a host of other clubs including neighbours Everton.
Riera, who has been given the number 11 shirt at Anfield, has previously played in the Premier
League in the 2005-06 season when he was on loan at Manchester City.
Liverpool has not been quiet on this final day of transfers. The latest out of Anfield is the
signing of Albert Riera from Espanyol. The 26-year-old should make an immediate impact at Anfield,
where he will wear #11.
According to the latest Spanish reports, Manchester City have made another record-breaking bid for
Brazilian forward Robinho, believed to be in the region of £32 million. It was believed that
Robinho was holding out for a move to Chelsea, but now that City have made an offer that meets
Madrid's valuation, it appears that Robinho [.

Albert Riera did not consider joining another club after discovering he was a target of
Liverpool.
The former Espanyol winger moved to Anfield on Monday as Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez paid an
undisclosed fee ahead of the transfer window deadline.
And having completed his move to Merseyside, Reira, who had a loan spell at Manchester City in
2006, is looking forward to the challenge.
Rafa Benitez is looking forward to concentrating on football after a hectic transfer window.
The Anfield boss added six names to his first-team squad during the summer, including the deadline
day capture of Albert Riera.
That deal saw Steve Finnan go the other way to Espanyol, while Andriy Voronin left for a year on
loan at Hertha Berlin.
I just hope like hell he works out.
Albert Riera today vowed to prove his worth at Anfield and insisted fans shouldn't judge him on his
last spell in English football with Manchester City.
On the day Rafael Benitez unveiled his deadline day signing to the media at Melwood, Riera insisted
his game has developed during the three years he has since spent in Spain - and now he can't wait
to make an impact on Merseyside.

competing for this season after joining the club at the end of the transfer window.
The former Espanyol winger knows that expectations at Anfield are high and is confident that the
current squad has the ability to try and win the quadruple this term.
