As the dust settles on the 2010 African Cup of Nations, Essam El-Hadary climbs down from his crossbar celebrating and Egypt put their trophy back in the cabinet, it is time for me to name my Best XI of the tournament. This year is slightly different to the last Cup of Nations. In Ghana I had to pick a team of the tournament and a second team, such was the plethora of top quality performers in 2008.

Sunderland have rejected claims that they have had a £2.5 million bid accepted by Egyptian side ENPPI for their right-back Ahmed Al-Muhammadi.

Earlier today, ENPPI director of football Alaa Abdul-Sadek told the Egyptian media;

"A Sunderland representative will come to Egypt after the end of the English Premier League to wrap up the deal [for Al-Muhammadi].

According to Mark Douglas at The Journal, Sunderland are close to signing ENPPI defender Ahmad Al-Muhammadi as Sunderland have agreed to pay a £500,000 loan fee. It is reported that the season-long loan could be completed by the end of the week.

West Bromwich were also linked with the 22-year-old earlier this month.

UPDATE: According to Sunderland's official website, Sunderland have signed ENPPI defender Ahmad Al-Muhammadi on a season-long loan with the option of making the deal permanent at the end of the season.

A Richard Dunne own goal (an unwelcome record 8th in the Premiership) proved the only difference between the teams at the final whistle, but Gérard Houllier will be left scratching his head wondering why the side he sent out struggled to get a foot into this game until the 2nd half.

Perhaps team selection had a lot to do with it; Stephen Ireland far from settled, Richard Dunne far from fitness, but the XI that took to the field ought to have been able to demonstrate a little more composure and cohesion during the first half.
