Unfancied CFR Cluj and FC BATE Borisov have made good starts to their UEFA Champions League
campaigns (Cluj are still unbeaten after playing Roma away and Chelsea at home). But they have a
long long way to go to match Dynamos FC of Harare, Zimbabwe. Despite facing multiple political and

African football often gets pushed aside in the international footballing press.
It's either too foreign to most journalists or not interesting enough for their tastes.
That's one reason today's piece about the Al Ahly-Zamalek derby in the Guardian was such a pleasure
to see.
If you're wondering why Zamalek keeper Mohamed Abdel Monsef looks so distraught in the above video,
it's because he knows Zamalek have just lost to Al-Ahly. Again. Moetaz Eno's cracking goal one
minute from time made it 2-0 to Al-Ahly in the Egyptian Super Cup, which means Zamalek have beaten
Al-Ahly just once in the [.
Egypt's Al Ahly are now in Asia, ready to face the world's best clubs in the FIFA Club World Cup,
the FIFA-sanctioned club world championship played every year in Japan.
Although England's Manchester United are favored, the reigning African champions have a ton of
confidence.
*They recently won their record sixth African championship, beating Cameroon's Coton Sport 4-2 on
aggregate.
Success has a way of causing lots of joy and by virtue, lots of trouble.
It happens all the time in sports. The moment a team or player becomes successful, the opportunity
for more riches or more glory is seen. It's almost as if success breeds trouble.
This is now being experienced by Egyptian club Al Ahly and Egyptian goal keeper Essam El-Hadary.

Al Ahly are in Japan for the FIFA Club World Cup and while they hold allusions of winning the
tournament this time around, their anxiety is beginning to show.
Yesterday, Ahly coach Manuel Jose accused their first-round opponents, Mexico's Pachuca, of sending
spies to their training camp.
So it's Egypt's Al Ahly against Cameroon's Coton Sport for the African Champions League title.
Al Ahly ... they're pretty successful, eh? They're in the final courtesy of a 1-0 victory over
Nigeria's Enyimba on Saturday.
The five-time champions beat the Nigerian side by the same aggregate score after Angolan Flavio
headed home compatriot Gilberto's corner after 26 minutes.
It was only last month that Al Ahly won a record sixth Champions League title in
Cameroon last month, but fans and managers alike have already switched their attention to next
season's elite club competition. The fixtures for the first and second rounds have been announced
in Cairo.
Oh, that was disappointing ...
Egypt's Al Ahly finished sixth at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan on Thursday after
suffering a 1-0 defeat against Adelaide United of Australia.
Brazilian Cristiano scored a 25-yard screamer in the 7th minute to ensure that the African
champions finish last at this year's tournament.
Sometimes winning trophies is not enough.
Ask Fabio Capello all about that. He's won the Spanish championship twice with Real Madrid and been
fired right after the celebrations both times ...
This time, it's Egyptian goalkeeper Essam Al Hadari who is feeling the heat.
Al Hadari was instrumental in helping Egypt win their second consecutive African Cup of Nations
title this past February.
This is the goal that won the massive Cairo derby yesterday. Al-Ahly vs Zamalek is always always
massive in Egypt, but yesterday the old foes faced off in the first game of the CAF Champions
League group stages. Al-Ahly - technically the homes team, though the teams share Cairo Stadium -
took the lead through little [.
Tomorrow's first leg of the African Champions League final is a classic case of David v.
Goliath.
On one side, we have the expertise and experience of Egypt's Al Ahly, who are chasing a
record-breaking sixth Champions League title and playing in their fourth successive final.
On the other, we have Cameroon's Coton Sport, who didn't even exist when Ahly were just beginning
to win titles.
Congratulations to Al Ahly, who won the 2008 African Champions League this morning, defeating
Cameroon's Coton Sport 4-2 on aggregate, drawing 2-2 in today's match.
The victory gives Egypt's Ahly their record 6th title, the most of any club in African continental
football.
Leading 2-0 from the first leg in Cairo a fortnight ago – where goals from Wael Gomaa and
Flavio separated the teams – Manuel Jose's side were always favorites to win their third
Champions League crown in four years.
As we close in on the time to select an African Player of the Year, how about Egypt's Mohamed
Aboutrika?
Aboutrika sports an excellent resume: he's won 2 African Cup of Nations with Egypt, won 3 African
Champions Leagues with Egyptian club team Al Ahly and conquered 4 league titles with the Egyptian
powerhouse.
You know a competition is struggling for respect when the favourites to win the thing promising to
take it seriously is considered news. Man Utd boss Alex Ferguson has declared "I'll take my
strongest team," which should go without saying for a tournament that's technically (but only
technically) the pinnacle of club football.
Even though Bristol City aren't talking about it, reports from Africa have the club ready to sign
Egyptian international Emad Moteab from Al Ahly. The move has been translated to me from Arabic
websites and all signs are pointing to...
The eyes of the football world turn to Cameroon this weekend and Sunday's second leg of the African
Champions League final between Egypt's Al Ahly and Cameroon's Coton Sport.
Ahly, five-time African champions, won the first leg in 2-0 in Egypt.
Now, Coton Sport will look to contain the Egyptian juggernaut at home.
Al Ahly coach Manuel Jose is beyond happy that his side won their record sixth African Champions
League this weekend with a 2-2 draw against Cameroon side Coton Sport.
Their 2-0 win from the first leg in Cairo clinched the tie for them in the end, earning Ahly a 4-2
victory on aggregate and a third African title in four years.

Disappointment reigns for Egypt's Al Ahly this morning as the African Champions crashed out of the
FIFA Club World Cup, losing 4-2 to Mexico's Pachuca.
Ahly took the lead through a Fausto Pinto own goal in the 28th minute.
Flavio then made it 2-0 with a goal on the counter-attack just before half-time, but Pachuca
came storming back after the interval.
