The 7th Annual Umbro Galway Cup takes place this weekend and former Ireland and Liverpool player, Ronnie Whelan was on ‘foot' to kick off and officially launch this year's event.

The four day event takes place at Drom – the home of Salthill Devon in Galway City from tomorrow Wednesday 3rd August and runs right through to Saturday 6th August, where 49 teams from five countries will play 125 games and compete to be named winner of their category.

Shamrock Rovers re-wrote history as they won their first ever European Cup tie, beating Estonian Champions FC Flora Tallinn 1-0 at the Tallaght Stadium to-night.


Rovers first European Cup adventure came with a 6-0 beating at Dalymount Park in 1957 against Sir Matt Busby's 'Busby Babes' who a few months later were destroyed by the Munich Air Crash.

The sixth edition of the all-Ireland Setanta Sports Cup, named after the Irish sports station, kicks off on Monday with an expanded tournament and a different format. Twelve teams will compete, six from Northern Ireland's Carling Premiership and six from the Airtricity League in the Republic of Ireland, with four of those teams Crusaders, Glentoran, Shamrock Rovers and Sligo Rovers given a bye into the quarter-finals.
