The Chicago Fire emerged with a 2-1 victory over conference rivals New England Wednesday
evening, a valuable win for the Fire as they aim to climb back into playoff contention.
Substitute Calen Carr's 85th minute tally secured the victory, after the two sides exchanged
first half goals.
A Saturday round up covering all the major football stories in England, Germany, Italy and
Spain.
In the English Premiership Arsenal won away at Ewood Park against Blackburn Rovers, one of the
tougher fixtures in the domestic season. They did so largely thanks to Theo Walcott who continued
the fine form he displayed last week, when he scored a hat trick against Blackpool, scoring today
with a cracking finish to open the scoring.
The MLS playoffs are set to begin this week without the local team but there are plenty of Fire
related stories to follow on the way to MLS Cup in Toronto on November 23. A closer look at each
first round match up provides more than a few reasons to watch.
MLSsoccer.com's Sam Stejskal and I compared notes on the upcoming playoffs and took a stab at
picking the winners.
Manchester United were eliminated from the most coveted Cup competition in the world on
Wednesday night in heartbreaking fashion. Having won their home leg 3-2 and finishing off the tie
with a level aggregate score of 4-4, United were put to the sword by the dreaded away goals
rule.
Santos sweep São Paulo aside in the Vila
The finals of the Campeonato Paulista 2010 will be decided between Santos and Santo André.
On Sunday, Santos put three past a toothless São Paulo to bring their total of goals to 90 in
25 games this season. São Paulo's best chance of getting through the tie came in the first leg at
the Morumbi.
Jose Mourinho seems to have the formula to win the UEFA Champions League, or at least make it to
the finals. In 2004 he won the UCL with F.C. Porto, in 2003 he also won the UEFA cup (Europa
League).
This year he will be part of another final, this time with Inter Milan facing Bayern Munich in the
Santiago Bernabeu.
Bayern Munich v Inter Milan
2010 UEFA Champions League Final
Saturday 22nd May 2010
Kickoff: 19:45 GMT
Venue: Santiago Bernabeu, Madrid
As it was written in the ancient prophecies or the Dead Sea scrolls or some such Tyldesley-esque
nonsense, Jose 'The Self-Appointed Special One' Mourinho will
lead his Inter Milan team out against Bayern Munich in the UEFA
Champions League final on the 22nd May.
In previous posts we've mentioned numerous things about UEFA's Coefficient System and
how it seems to effect clubs in numerous different ways. FC Aktobe of Kazakhstan are just one of
these effected clubs. And, as four-time champions of the Kazakhstan Premier League,
they've become a regular to the Champions League Qualification Rounds in recent years.
Last night Toronto FC once again did the predicable and pulled off a 1:0 victory against
Honduran side CD Motagua, featuring Amado Guevera. This was the first leg of a two match playoff in
the CONCACAF Champions League qualifying round.
Not a bad win, and it did look like TFC were in control for most of the game.
By 1977, the disco starship of the NASL had already blasted off pretty far into its groovy
cartoon orbit that was the year the New York Cosmos dropped the "New York" from their name. It was
a league of John Oates mustaches half the players looked like mellow plumbers and haystack
man-perms, a green festivity of daffy-eyed showmen in 100% cotton shorts.
FC Barcelona came back from last week's 3-1 loss in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup to take
the 2010 title by an aggregate score of 5-3 following their 4-0 trouncing of Sevilla at the Camp
Nou earlier today in the second leg of the tie. The Catalan giants dominated play throughout the
match [.

Liverpool were forced to come back from a deficit once again in Turkey, as they recorded
only their second ever win in the country against Trabzonspor in the Europa League third round
qualifiers.
From the outset, it looked as if Liverpool fans' week was about to get significantly worse.
For women's soccer fans, Saturday's game is kind of a big deal. After winning or being in the
finals or semi-finals of every FIFA Women's World Cup, the U.S. national team is fighting to even
be in the 2011 line-up. The CONCACAF WWCQ semifinal loss against Mexico showed vulnerability
in the USWNT and pushed them to a home-home series with Italy to determine who gets to play in
Germany next summer.

Just what Big Sam's dodgy ticker needed a ten-goal nerve shredder.
Who saw this coming though? I thought it might be 0-0 or 1-0 to Villa, but it was one of those
rare matches where the players become so engrossed in the match that they play without any
inhibition.

He might not put the performance on his highlight reel, but the result is all that matters to
Brad Guzan right now.
Guzan made three saves and Aston Villa battled from an early deficit to defeat Blackburn
yesterday 6-4 and take a wild Carling Cup semifinal on a 7-4 aggregate at Villa Park.
What an entertaining two-leg semifinal, eh?
Manchester United and Manchester City played about as fun a home-and-home series you'll see at the
end of a tournament.
Carlos Tevez had the two-goal display and exchanged taunts with Gary Neville in the first game.
Then on Wednesday, Craig Bellamy gets hit by a coin thrown from the crowd and Tevez had a late goal
that equalized the aggregate score.
Manchester United defeated Manchester City 3-1 at Old Trafford in the second leg of the semifinals.
Man U clinched a spot in the final with a 4-3 aggregate score line. Of course, since last week's
match at Manchester City, a lot of talk heated up this rivalry rematch. Tevez and Neville went at
it. El Apache made some gestures in the first leg during his goal celebrations and some post-game
remarks that didn't go well with the Manchester United side.
Sarawak v Terengganu 1-4 (0-2 1-2)

Negeri Sembilan v PDRM 8-2 (3-2 5-0)

Kelantan v Kedah 1-1 (1-1 0-0)
The above is aggregate score with home and away in brackets.
Below are collated results for the knockout phase of the 2009-10 CONCACAF Champions League. This
post will be bumped to the top on matchdays until the conclusion of the competition. The current
phase is highlighted in red bold lettering. Ties are a two-match, home-and-away series, higher
aggregate score wins, and away goals count.
Soccer America's post-game report on the Manchester United 4-0 victory over AC Milan in UEFA
Champions League action, as well as Sir Alex Ferguson's challenge to Wayne Rooney to match
Cristiano Ronaldo's magical goal-scoring tally of 2007-08.
[UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE] Even with a bad knee, Wayne Rooney was once again too much for AC Milan.
Manchester United left no doubt as to who was moving onto the Champion's League round of eight as
they put AC Milan to the sword with 4-0 thrashing. The complete destruction of Milan on Wednesday
night left the final aggregate score at an eye popping 7-1 in favor of Manchester United. It was a
tall task [.
After a weekend of exciting league fixtures that saw unexpected results in the EPL, Serie A and
La Liga, our attention shifts back to the Champions League where German club Bayern Munich host
Manchester United at the Allianz Arena tomorrow night in the one of the two quarter finals
fixtures.
Sunday's action in the Barclays Premier League showed Manchester City fans exactly what they
have been waiting to see since their massive investments last summer: dominance in Manchester. As
the Eastlands outfit took Birmingham City apart at home, Manchester United fans across the city
were lamenting the missed chances in a goalless draw at Blackburn.
Midfielder Charles Kazlauskas (Milwaukee) and Helmond Sport are two games away
from being promoted to the Eredivisie, the top league in the Netherlands.
Helmond Sport turned the tables on FC Den Bosch with a 2-1 away victory Thursday to even the
aggregate score of their home-and-home series at 3-3, then won 5-4 on penalty kicks to move on to
the final round of the Nacompetitie playoffs.
Puerto Rico Islanders are amongst the quartet going for Caribbean glory
The Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship will be decided this week with the final
group stage taking place at the Marvin Lee Stadium in Macoya, Trinidad & Tobago from Wednesday May
5th until the final games are played four days later on Sunday.
Velez Sarsfield defeated Chivas 2-0 but because of the aggregate score was eliminated
from this year's Copa.
As you may or may not know, I'm a Bay Area native. So, I have an inherent interest in this
fledgling rivalry with the Earthquakes.
I happened to be at last year's game at San Jose, and it was pretty obvious that the Quakes
organization took the Heritage Cup at least somewhat seriously. The halftime entertainment included
a celebration of the original NASL Quakes and there were mentions of the game's Heritage Cup
ramifications throughout the program.
We continue our look at the über-minnows that make up the First-Round Qualifying Stage of the
Champions League. After delving into the murk that encompasses the clubs in the other qualifying
match at this stage, we turn to a different shade of unknown as we venture into the Andorran League
and examine FC Santa Coloma.
The last of the four clubs featuring in the First-Round of Champions League Qualification is
Birkirkara FC of Malta who will face FC Santa Coloma of Andorra. Their first leg of qualification
is to be held tomorrow, while FK Rudar Pljevlja of Montenegro and SP Tre Fiori of San Marino are
scheduled to kick-off the following day.
** This post will be bumped to the top of the site until the end of the Preliminary Round. ** Below
are collated results for the Preliminary Round of the 2010-11 CONCACAF Champions League. Ties are a
two-match, home-and-away series, higher aggregate score wins, and away goals count. If aggregate
and away goals are level, a 30-minute extra time period is played with penalties if necessary.
Phase 1: Preliminary Round and Phase 3: Elimination Round
• Greater aggregate number of away goals scored in regulation time in the two matches (excluding
any goals scored in overtime)
• Greater number of goals scored in the overtime periods at the end of the second match
• Kicks from the Penalty Spot procedure (as per FIFA Laws of the Game)
This is pulled directly from the competition rules on the CCL homepage.
In just his second match as a Sounder, Alvaro Fernandez made sure his place in our lore was
secure. Fernandez's header in the 73rd minute tied the score in the road half of Seattle's two-leg
CCL preliminary stage series with Metapan, and gave the Sounders a 2-1 aggregate score victory.
The goal assured the Sounders of no fewer than six more CCL matches, including two home matches
against Costa Rican powerhouse Saprissa and Mexican side Monterrey.
The prospect of the first Mexican winners of the Copa Libertadores flickered briefly on Wednesday
night. In last week's first leg of the final, Chivas Guadalajara had been outplayed and beaten 2-1
at home by Internacional of Brazil. Few people gave them much of a chance in the return game. In
front of their own fans in Porto Alegre, Internacional had a 100 percent home record.

Messi and company celebratingAfter the update on the English Community Shield, French Supercup, and
the German Supercup, Inter Milan and Barcelona won their respective Supercups. Inter defeated Roma
3-1 at the San Siro winning their 5th Italian Supercup, and Barcelona defeated Sevilla in their two
leg Supercup, losing the first leg away 3-1, but winning the return leg at the Camp Nou 4-0 with
Messi scoring a hat trick (aggregate score 5-3 for Barcelona).
In 2006-07 Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic finally settled into the Manchester United side and
Sir Alex Ferguson's men won the club its first league title for four seasons. The following season
in 2007-08 Manchester United won the league on the back of a superb defensively display allied to
an incredible offensive performance from Cristiano Ronaldo.
Hat-trick finished with a penaltyWhile there have been rumors regarding a possible departure from
Tottenham for Peter Crouch, it seems like those possibilities have faded ofter his hat-trick
against the Swiss Young Boys. A resounding 4-0 victory from Harry Redknapp's Spurs which lets them
move on to the group stages of Europe's elite competition.
Hulk (25 July 1986) is a Brazilian-born footballer who currently plays striker for FC porto.
While Genk may be succeeding in the Belgian league, they were no match for FC Porto as Hulk
netted three goals in their 4-2 victory. Hulk had missed the previous two matches due to a family
tragedy, but has obviously come back from his time off immediately making an impact.
Another mouth watering Group G encounter takes place tomorrow when Real Madrid host Ajax at the
Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. A couple of years back, this would be the match to watch. Real Madrid
and Ajax are two of Europe's most successful clubs however, over the years, they have been reduced
to just spectators in this tournament.
