Liverpool field strong lineup for their final preseason match today vs Valencia.
Liverpool Lineup: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Agger, Aurelio, Adam, Henderson, Spearing,
Aquilani, Downing, Carroll.
Subs: Jones, Doni, Cole, Maxi, Kyrgiakos, Kuyt, Lucas, Ngog, Kelly, Flanagan, Robinson.
This is what Hicks and Gillett did to Liverpool's playing squad.
Yes, Benitez had a Redknappian fondness for wheeling and dealing – and had to rebuild right away
despite winning the Champions League in his first season – but an awful lot of that business was
compelled by the tumors' poverty and indebtedness, evident in the number of transfers in the last
two to three seasons.
There's nothing as brutal as a football forum during the summer.
Sign Brad Friedel as a back-up to Pepe Reina? Well, why bother, he was "garbage the first time
round"? A promising midfielder like Jordan Henderson? "£13M ++ for a youngster who can 'do a job'
sounds a bit steep.." Or someone like Connor Wickham?

Reports in the media suggest that Arsenal are chasing the signature of want-away Liverpool defender
Daniel Agger. Liverpool have been in shocking form this season and manager Roy Hodgson may not even
make it though the next 24 hours as manager after a humiliating defeat away at Blackburn has piled
even more misery onto him, the [.
It has been a quite quiet day today for Arsenal transfer rumours. It is well accepted that it is a
question of a center-back or nothing when it comes to signings, the manager is waiting on the
diagnosis of Sebastian Squillaci's injury after Thomas Vermaelen had yet another setback in
training, Italian full-back Davide Santon is [.
Liverpool's tactical chess against Stoke, well-analyzed by Noel from Liverpool Offside, worked a
treat yesterday. Best described as a 3-4-2-1, it was interesting to see the roles played by each in
the new formation.
What caught my eye in the chalkboards was how roles overlapped and fit together, increasing the
side's overall cohesion.
One of the major concerns about Chelsea these past seasons have been the ageing of their senior
players. Drogba, Lampard and Terry are all above 30 years old. These stalwarts have been the
backbone of the most successful Chelsea side in the club's history.
The rebuilding process have started with the buying spree in January.
For reasons only explained by sheer masochism, I spent most of yesterday looking up some defensive
statistics. In lieu of posting a much-loved data dump, I thought I'd dress it up a bit. I needed an
excuse to open Adobe Illustrator anyway. There are some hard numbers in the comments if you're so
inclined.

Quite a surprise to see Kuyt in the starting lineup at the expense of Suarez, Guess he's still
not 100% after Copa America.

Is It Time To Bench Jamie Carragher? - originally posted on Soccerlens.com
Carragher without a doubt has been one of the most reliable and consistent players for Liverpool
over the past decade. The veteran defender even now is brilliant with his abilities, however the
major concern is that with his age the errors are increasing as well.

The match was poor, Liverpool were poor.
Here is Liverpools lineup to face West Brom. Steven Gerrard has been left out of the squad after
picking up an injury in training, more on this as it developes. Carragher is also absent.
First XI: Reina, Johnson, Enrique, Skrtel, Agger, Adam, Lucas, Henderson, Downing, Carroll,
Suarez.
Subs: Doni, Maxi, Coates, Kuyt, Spearing, Flanagan, Bellamy.
A few days ago, Liverpool legend Steve Nicol criticised Daniel Agger for publicly suggesting that
some of his team-mates did not care enough about the club's poor performance against Swansea.
Former Newcastle and West Ham goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has backed up Nicol's stance on the issue,
arguing that it wasn't Agger's place to question the commitment of his colleagues in public.
Reina, Johnson, Enrique, Skrtel, Agger, Adam, Henderson, Downing, Maxi, Kuyt, Suarez.
Subs: Doni, Kelly, Carragher, Shelvey, Bellamy, Coates, Carroll.

Improved tactics and hard work lead to the right result. It's the first time this season that
Liverpool have gone behind in a league match and went on to win.
For the fifth year running. Not for those with weak stomachs.

The most embarrassing defeat in a season full of them.
We saw a side more shapeless than against Blackpool. A loss more unexpected than the 2-0 drubbing
at Stoke, and far more unexpected that the deserved thumping suffered at Manchester City.
Two big FA Cup matches are on television today. The first featuring Manchester United against
Liverpool, where Kenny Dalglish returns for his first game in charge of the club again. The second
features Leicester City, managed by Sven Goran-Eriksson against Manchester City. Both ties promise
to be very entertaining.

So much for a storybook return.
1st minute, Webb gives a penalty for Berbatov's clear dive. 32nd minute, Webb shows Gerrard a
straight red for a tackle similar to one Rafael went unpunished for.
Long live the King
Liverpool fans are often claimed to be some of the most rational and intelligent in the world.
They hardly ever turn on a manager (and Hodgson very nearly turned on them first) and they know the
difference between a bad team and a team that is being badly managed.

The perfect start, fitting for a new era. Then the old era crept in. It's going to take more than
"good feelings" to fix this side.
Liverpool recently sacked Roy Hodgson after an underwhelming campaign and brought in former boss
and club legend Kenny Dalglish to take the reins on a temporary basis. But the Scot is yet to taste
victory in his second stint at the helm.
His first game in charge was against Manchester United in the FA Cup, which ended in a 1-0 defeat
to his side.
The Liverpool FC line up for the away trip to Wolves in the Premier League fixture on Saturday

The transfer window's winding down already, though it feels like just yesterday Liverpool was
getting hammered by Wolves at home and I was writing poor Conrad knock-offs to cope with Hodgson's
continuing employment. But back to the transfer window, and today's poll question: If you could
force one transfer through, at which position does the squad most need strengthening if it is to
move up the table and see success in Europe?

Liverpool's lineup prompted a barrage of pre-match questions. Seeing three central defenders, three
full-backs, three central midfielders, and one striker-turned-right winger left many questioning
exactly what formation Liverpool would use.
Everything is connected. Everything is related. The system works because it is the perfect
system for the opponent and the players are effective in their roles, not because any one player
grabs the game by the scruff of the neck and carries the team to victory.
i.
In defense, three central defenders comprehensively negate Stoke's solitary target.
YouTube is littered with overdramatic Liverpudlian tributes to Torres. To add to the buildup
for today's Chelsea-Liverpool match (kicking off at Stamford Bridge at the top of the hour), here's
one that is a highlight reel of El Niño when he was at the top of his game, in 2008-09 primarily

Meanwhile, the teams are in, according to the Guardian's liveblog:

You see the image above? This picture of Danny Agger and his abs was taken by a Kickette Soldier
Girl present at the Denmark vs. England game last night. There were other photos, but unfortunately
our gal's next move was to leap the hoardings and race towards Danny, brandishing a bottle of
tanning oil and a copy of ‘Tattoo Monthly' and she was brought down by five burly security men
before any contact could me made.
Wigan had scored only ten goals away from home prior to Saturday and faced a daunting task of
scoring against a Liverpool defence which had kept four clean sheets in a row. Hugo Rodallega
ensured points were shared at DW Stadium back in November and Latics boss, Martinez was hoping for
a similar result.

Just enough. Barely. But just enough will do.
There were a lot of similarities to the last leg except where it counts, in the result. Liverpool
deployed a similar 4-2-3-1 formation, with key players still absent.
