Next up on our countdown of World Club Ranking seasons in 1986. The 1985-86 season is known, in
part, as the first season of the English Premier League's banishment from European football, which
severely hurt them in the rankings eventually, though English clubs still managed to hold their own
in 1986.
Africa Sports trimmed the gap open at the top of the Côte d'Ivoire Premier Division to seven
points with defeat over Stade Abidjan. At such a premature phase, it would be ludicrous to classify
the encounter as a ‘six-pointer' but had the scoreline sprung into the favour of Stade Abidjan,
the aftermath would have spelt grave danger for Africa Sports' prospects of instigating a memorable
title defence.
