DC United is going to Africa. Instead of their usual shopping in Latin America, the club has gone
in a different direction as of late. At the start of the season they signed Francis Doe (Libria)
and a month ago they signed keeper Louis Crayton (Liberia). Now they are set to bring on two more
Africans [.

that West Ham had also made an offer for the former Fenerbahce midfielder, but Arsene Wenger could
also be on the look out for the experienced stalwart. Appiah is one of the most highly regarded

Steve had the scoop. As we suspected yesterday, D.C. United is looking to Africa to bolster its
roster. Club officials are confirming this report from Africa that they are about to acquire Sierra
Leone defender Ibrahim Koroma as a developmental player. Koroma, 18, started for his country in
Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Equatorial Guinea.
We've shown you the UEFA Champions League, Copa Libertadores, CONCACAF Champions League, now it is
Africa's turn.
Why Africa? Because with the recent influx of talent from that continent to teams such as New
England Revolution, and DC United it may be interesting to watch on a full day of football.
While it was week one in the 2008/2009 European Champions League this week, the CAF African
Champions League is steadily building to its crescendo, with this weekend´s fixtures set to
determine who qualifies for the semi-finals of Africa´s most prestigious club competition. The
tournament is arranged differently to the European version in its current guise.
And they're off... in Europe at least. Most of the globe have started World Cup qualifying, but
this weekend sees the teams from Europe start their campaigns to qualify for the World Cup in South
Africa. As well as asking three fans what they think of their team's chances we also: Review the

The Eurpoean Socceroos looked good in nice cool conditions. They were a goal down early but still
in the game. As we know the Dutch are a million miles away from their 1970s total domination, Total
Football days, now they play the long balls to the speedy wingers just like the Roar...
The Socceroos were probably lucky to win the penalty, but it highlights how protected Mark Bosnich
is given (see last weeks Roar v CCM) their goalie was given a red in a friendly - and Kennedy had
already missed the ball.
Wigan Athletic have completed the transfer of Ghanian keeper Richard Kingson on a free transfer.
Kingson, the elder brother of Hearts midfielder Laryea Kingston, was released by Birmingham City at
the end of last season. Wigan boss Steve Bruce, the manager of Birmingham when they signed Kingson
was quick to snap him up, just as [.

For quite a while now, I've been getting questions and comments about the WCR
Weekly Top 25. Some weeks, I try to go into a little detail regarding the purpose and
reasoning of the rankings, but it becomes cumbersome to try to give explanations and principles on
a weekly basis.

The situation in Africa
Chelsea are to join the race to sign Arsenal target Steven Appiah. The former Fenerbahce midfielder
left the Turkish club earlier this summer and is keen to come to England, with Arsene Wenger and
now, Blues boss Luis Fillipe Scolari keen to offer him that chance to come to the Premier
League.
The Ghana international could fit straight into Scolari's starting eleven with current holding
midfield player Michael Essien likely to be out for up to six months.
We know it's been a week or two since the most recent round of World Cup qualifiers took place, but
we never quite got round to summing up all the action from outside Europe, so here's our
whistle-stop tour of all you need to know, starting with...
South America
It seems we were a little hasty to cast our judgement on Brazil after the September 6th/7th
matches.
