Over on World Cup Blog, I've been slowly but surely getting very very excited for the 2008 African
Cup of Nations in Ghana. But excitement turned to anger this morning when I read this story in The
Times, about the Ghanaian government "cleaning up" the area around the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
That doesn't [.
A few quick recaps of some of the games you may have been watching this weekend: US U-17 2-0 Brazil
U-17 in the Nike friendlies. The Brazilian youth don't have much practice at losing, so they're not
very good at it. Tempers were already starting to fray after the US went up 1-0, but things [...]
The end of the year is a time for looking back at where we've been. And where I've been is... Well,
mostly here. Since its birth a little over a year ago, this site has been my favorite place to
waste productively spend my time. Today I decided to take some [...]
Oh, the exciting life of Hayley Roach, the PR and Marketing Officer for the Sheffield & Hallamshire
County FA. One day she's doing PR and marketing stuff in England, the next she's chopping up a dead
cow to feed to lions in an African lion rehabilitation program. Oh! The glamour! (Lions [...
The British Asylum and Immigration Authorities have returned their decision on Alhassan Bangura's
asylum appeal, and the news isn't good for the Watford youngster: If the Immigration Minister
himself doesn't step in himself and allow Bangura to say in England, he faces deportation back to
Sierra Leone.
During the 2002 World Cup, Philippe Troussier was a hero in Japan. He'd coached the national team
for four years, leading them to victory in the 2000 Asian Cup and second-place finish in the 2001
Confederation Cups, and hopes were high that the Frenchman would bring the hosts some sort of World
Cup miracle.
Last week, the media were reporting that the Namibian Coach, Ben Bamfuchile, had resigned to go
back to his mining business. This week, they're reporting that he says he never did any such thing.
AC Milan flew into Japan today for the FIFA World Club Cup, apparently dressed for success in very
nice club blazers. It's the fourth edition of the FIFA tournament (featuring champions from the
world's football confederations) and so far South America owns the trophy. Specifically Brazil owns
the trophy with Corinthians winning the inaugural 2000 [.
On December 1, World AIDS Day, numerous events were held around the world to raise awareness about
the deadly disease. One of these events was a soccer tournament held in Bloemfontein, South
African. Organized by a young woman named Leah Bellow-Handelman and others at the non-profit
organization Grassroot Soccer, the event was intended to bring [.
Well this is eerie. Just yesterday we proposed a hypothetical situation where Didier Drogba picked
up a long term injury while playing for the Ivory Coast, and questioned whose responsibility that
was and also whether clubs were fully supportive of their player's international careers. Today we
learn that Double D does indeed have a long [.
Giving new meaning to the word "hubris," Pompey assistant manager Joe Jordan would like the
Confederation of African Football to know that the timing of the African Cup of Nations is really
inconvenient for him, and should be changed. Said Jordan, "From our point of view a switch to a
summer date would suit us.
Third-place playoffs are normally lackadaisical affairs where no one really cares who wins. But
when you're Urawa Red Diamonds and Étoile du Sahel, and never really had a chance of winning the
Club World Cup against the likes of Boca and AC Milan, then the third place playoff suddenly
becomes a lot more important and [.

Africa is a big place. No, really. It's a BIG place. It's so big, in fact, that on maps of the
World, they actually shrink it to fit. Don't believe me ? Here's a map showing the real size of the
continent. Hopefully, you're now getting the idea that Africa is, um, a BIG PLACE. So, which idiots
would put the first four World Cup 2010 qualifying matches for African nations on consecutive
No matter how Etoile Sportive du Sahal perform in the third place game later this week, the tiny
Tunisian club will leave the World Club Cup with the heads held high, having knocked off Mexico's
Pachua and given the mighty Boca Juniors all they could handle in losing 1-0 today to the Argentine
giants.
You have to feel for players in Zimbabwe. The country has rampant corruption and chronic shortages,
and inflation is currently running at 15,000% a year. (And no, I didn't accidentally add an extra
zero there.) If you slept through your econ course like me, this means that anything that cost you

according to the BBC. Now, he just has to wait anxiously until January 10 when the squad will be
further trimmed before the tournament starts January 20.
