Seven teams have been competing in Abu Dhabi over the past week in the 2010 FIFA Club World
Cup: Inter Milan (Italy), Pachuca (Mexico), Internacionale (Brazil), TP Mazembe (Congo DR),
Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma (South Korea), Al-Wahda Sports Club (UAE), and Hekari United FC (Papua Ne
Guinea). The final is set for Saturday: Inter Milan vs, surprisingly, TP Mazembe.
Just been watching a re run of Indonesia's first AFF Cup semi final against the Philippines and for
a moment I couldn't believe my ears. One of the commentators was describing the hard work being put
in by one of the Indonesian strikers. The pressure he was giving defenders, the tracking back, his
movement.
The 2010 J-League champions Nagoya Grampus Eight are out of this year's Emperor's Cup. The main
knockout tournament in Japanese football plays its final three rounds this week and Stoppage
Time International Football Blog reviews the quarter-finals which were played today.
The Emperor's Cup grants a berth to the 2011 AFC Champions League for the winner so there was a
lot at stake in each of today's last eight showdowns.
FC Seoul have won the 2010 K-League championship following a 4-3 aggregate victory in the final
and means that they have won their fourth league title following triumphs in 1985, 1990 and
2000.
With both teams going into the second leg of the final having drawn the first game 2-2 the
stakes were high as the K-League reached its climax for yet another season.
I see on the Asian Football Confederation website there are links to .pdf copies of official
programmes/brochures for the Knock Out stage and the Final of the AFC Champions League.
Earlier in the year I managed to pick up a copy of the programme for the group stage, more by
luck than chance and I also have a copy from last season's group stage but it would be nice if
these fine brochures were made more widely available rather than just being distributed to a select
few.
It could be argued that Persipura missed out on last season's Indonesia Super League because
their near impregnable home stadium of Mandala Stadium in Jayapura was undergoing renovations so
that it would meet Asian Football Confederation criteria for hosting Asian club football.
Their opening home games were played in Makassar, vital points were dropped and they missed out
on a second consecutive title.
Once again we will see a number of teams from the region competing in both the AFC Champions
League and the AFC Cup.
Indonesia – Arema (ACL), Sriwijaya (ACL Play Off), Persipura (AFC)
Thailand – Muang Thong United (ACL Play Off), Chonburi (AFC)
Singapore – Tampines Rovers (AFC)
Vietnam – Ha Noi (AFC), Song Lam Nghe An
Nobody from Malaysia!
There are plenty of teams in the Divisi Utama this season who will be looking enviously at the
Indonesia Super League and wondering why they aren't part of the fun given their history and
heritage.
Take for example Persik Kediri. It was only 2007 when Persik, coached by Daniel Roekito and
inspired by the Three Amigos of Christian Gonzalez, Ronald Fagundez and Danilo Fernando, were
beating the likes of Sydney and Shanghai Shenhua in the AFC Champions League and holding Urawa
Diamonds 3-3 in an exciting clash.
The commonly confusing format of the FIFA Club World Cup sees Champions League winners, Inter
Milan, need only one win to reach the final of this years competition.
Rafael Benitez's side will play Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma in Wednesday's semi final as they bid to
become world club champions.
AFC Champions League winners, Seongnam, beat Al Wahda 4-1 in Saturday's quarter final.
Forca Barça!
As part of the run up to tomorrow's FIFA Club World Cup 2010 championship game (between 2009-10
UEFA Champions League winner Inter Milan and 2010 AFC Champions League winner TP Mazembe), we take
a look back at the finale of last year's tournament, between FC Barcelona (who qualified by
winning the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League) and Estudiantes de la Plata (also known, apparently,
as Los Pincharratas–The Rat Stabbers, and who had won the 2009 Copa Libertadores).
