The draw for the group stage of the 2009 AFC Champions League has thrown up some tough challenges
for Japanese clubs.
The opening stages of the Champions League are split into regionalised West Asian and East Asian
groups, and Nagoya Grampus will have a tough time of things when they make their debut in the
competition.
37-year-old French midfielder Sabri Lamouchi is now at the Qatari league's
Umm-Salal. After winning the 2008 Emir of Qatar Cup, the club has qualified for the Group Stage of
2009 AFC Champions League.
Lamouchi was a member of France's semi-final squad at Euro 1996. He has played for European clubs
AJ Auxerre, Monaco, and Parma.
Their campaign could hardly have been more exhausting, but Gamba Osaka are the Emperor's Cup
champions after beating underdogs Kashiwa Reysol 1-0 in front of 44,066 fans at the National
Stadium in Tokyo.
Gamba started the season by lifting the exhibition Pan-Pacific Championship in Hawaii last
February.
