Adelaide United took a giant stride towards their first AFC Champions League final on Wednesday.
The Australians scored three second-half goals to crush Uzbeki giants FC Bunyodkor Kuruvchi 3-0 in
their semi-final first leg, ensuring a handy buffer when they travel to Tashkent for the return tie
on October 22.
An all-Japanese semi-final will take place in the AFC Champions League as defending champions
Urawa Red Diamonds and Gamba Osaka were drawn
together. Three clubs from Japan could have made it to the last four but Australia's
Adelaide United beat Kashima Antlers 2-1 on aggregate to
terminate any possibilities.
In an all J-League battle, Gamba Osaka stunned defending AFC Champions League holder Urawa Reds 3-1
away to reach their first Asian Champions League final today. Gamba will face Adelaide United
in next month's final after the Australian side completed a 3-1 aggregate victory over Zico's
Bunyodkur in Tashkent in the other semi-final.
TOKYO - Japanese giants Gamba Osaka brushed past Australian A-League side Adelaide United of 3-0 in
the first leg of the Asian Champions League final today. Brazilian striker Lucas put the Gamba in
front in the 37th minute as he sprung Adelaide United's offside trap before finding the net with a
deflected shot.
In a league where teams like TOT, KTB and PEA hardly roll off the toungue it is hardly surprising
that a club that appeals to a region is finding success both locally and regionally.
Chonburi is on the eastern seaboard of Thailand, a booming area of industrial parks and tourism.
Now they have secured a healthy dose of cash to develop their new stadium and raise their profile.
Japanese club Gamba Osaka won the Asian Champions League when they beat Adelaide United 2-0 in
Adelaide on Wednesday. The J. League side tallied a 5-0 aggregate against the Australians. The
Australian side's hopes of overcoming a 3-0 deficit incurred in Japan were thrashed when striker
Lucas scored twice within the opening 15 [.
Champions League review
England in extasy as Milan and Real fall
It looks like three English teams will make it to the semifinals of the Champions League, just like
they did last season. Arsenal or Liverpool are sure to be there while Manchester United and
specially Chelsea are favourits against Roma and Fenerbahce, respectively.
Champions League report
Old acquaintances meet again
The semifinal clashes in this season's Champions League have joined old foes who have run against
one another many times in the European competitions.
Manchester United and Barcelona have played seven games in the UEFA's competitions while Liverpool
and Chelsea have met on six occasions, all of them in the last three years.
Champiions League
Triump of the Premiership as English clubs take it all
Manchester United and Chelsea will meet on May 21st in Moscow in only the third single-nation
Champions League finals. The first ever such event dates back to 1999/00, when Real Madrid defeated
Valencia by 3-0 in Paris.
Champions League
Minimal score brings luck: 1-0 in semifinals decided once again
Ozren Podnar reports...
Do you plan to win the Champions League or the UEFA Cup? We suggest that you win by 1-0 on
aggregate in the semifinals. This score was lucky for Manchester United (so lucky themselves in the
finals against Chelsea), but also to Barcelona, Liverpool, Sevilla, Porto and Valencia.
The AFC website mentions the former AEK midfielder in a few articles on its site. Rivaldo Scores at

After thoroughly enjoying the AFC Champions league match between Adelaide and Kashima on Wednesday
it got me thinking, where is my "FoxSports Football" channel.
Late last year a lot of rumours were circulating that FoxSports was set to launch a dedicated
Football channel. The channel was rumoured to have a much more expanded coverage of Football across
the globe including :
1.
New world clubs couldn't care less if the Club World Cup is derided by Europe, or the rest of
football's established order.
That's the message coming loud and clear from Aurelio Vidmar, a former Oceania player-of-the-year
and current coach of Adelaide United following the A-League's club's fairytale final third of 2008.
The sixth round of the J. League throws up two significant clashes, with the eleventh Tokyo derby
competing for headlines along with the eternal classic between Urawa Reds and Kashima Antlers.
Fallen giants Tokyo Verdy host their Ajinomoto Stadium co-tenants FC Tokyo on April 12, with Verdy
having only just registered their first win in the league since winning promotion back to the top
flight.
South Korean football fans have been following the progress of Manchester United and Park Ji-sung
to the UEFA Champions League final with great interest. On May 21, the English champions will meet
Chelsea in Moscow in the biggest club match on the planet and if Park features, and as he played
every minute of the quarter and semifinals there is no reason to suggest he won't, he will become
the first Asian to play in Europe's showpiece.
And so it came to pass that South Korean team Chunnam Dragons were playing Melbourne Victory of
Australia to preserve their faint hopes of reaching the last eight of the Asian Champions
League.
Melbourne had been even worse than the Dragons in the competition but the A-League outfit at least
had the excuse that it was their first time.
After over a month of no laser lightshows, and no killer whale mascots, the J League returns to
action tomorrow. With the European Championship winding down, the attention in Japan will be
returning to domestic football, and since we've been a bit distracted ourselves, let's take a look
at how things stand in J [.
Prepare for news concerning perhaps the most bizarre potential transfer in
recent memory. The word on the street is that Barcelona and Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o shall be
signing for Uzbekistan club Kuruvchi by the end of the week, having landed at the world famous
Tashkent International Airport this morning.
A continuation of the look at the Foreign Player for the coming season
Adelaide United
Aurelio Vidmar seems to be in love with players with one name
and now have four Brazilians. Adelaide fans have a lot of football to look forward to this year due
to being the first team to graduate from the AFC Champions League Group Phase.
Canberra A-League already has more Members than The Mariners had for their first game. We're two
years out. And the Mariners have made a profit.
So to the doubters from Canberra's football past, and there's heaps of yer:) it can be done:)
Mariners release below.
"We must also thank each of our sponsors and corporate supporters, who last season
contributed some $3 million to our cause.
With the international break yielding a positive result for Japan and the autumn leaves starting to
make their first appearances on the tree-lined avenues surrounding the National Stadium, attention
now turns to the business end of the J. League season.
Five teams are still in with a genuine chance of lifting the trophy, but northern outfit Consadole
Sapporo are certainly not one of them.
All eyes will be on Chiba for the 28th round of the J. League as JEF United welcome Urawa Reds to
the Fukuda Denshi Arena.
A month ago JEF United looked certainties for relegation, but Alex Miller's men have launched a
late bid for salvation as the Chiba Dogs chase their fifth straight win in this match.
At a time when the J. League is crying out for a team to take the championship by the scruff of the
neck, the top five continue to falter in their race for the title.
Kashima Antlers continue to lead the way on 54 points, but they will be disappointed with their
most recent 0-0 draw at home to the defensive-oriented Albirex Niigata.
There has been a noticeable lack of signings by Melbourne Victory during the off season to date.
Certainly Victory has been focussed on their AFC Champions League campaign but I am sure Gary Cole
has been working hard behind the scenes to turnaround the poor season from last year.
So who exactly do we expect to be exiting the team and what areas might we expect to see new faces
next year.
Two weeks ago, it was seven goals, so this time in this live commentary AFC Champions League match
between Gamba Osaka and Melbourne Victory, it will probably see a match with very few goals and
more tension. Both teams will be doing all they can to ensure that the goalfest from the first
match does not repeat itself or they face a tongue lashing from their managers if they make the
same defensive mistakes again.
It has not been an easy time for these two sides involved in this online live commentary AFC
Champions League match between Chunnam Dragons and Melbourne Victory as they both sit at the bottom
of the group and while it is not that big a gap to make up to progress further in the competition,
they will need to do it at the expense of the other team.
It has been a long time coming for Rodrigo "Roddy" Vargas but he now finds himself on the
cusp of a national cap. 29 years old Vargas has been selected in Pim's twenty-three man squad to
take on Ghana on Friday 23rd of May in Sydney and it looks like he may get a start.
Vargas has been a standout performer for Victory in its recent AFC Champions League campaign.
There is nothing more predictable that our media focussing on the negative.
Yesterday the Asian Football Confederation released their restructure of the AFC Champions League.
The restructure itself is overdue, the format of the current competition is poor. Allowing only the
top team of each group passage to the knockout rounds results in the situation we saw last night
where the group winner has been decided before the final round and no one has anything to play for
except pride.
I go overseas for three days and a severe case of insanity breaks out.
With the release of the details for the revamp of the AFC Champions League and the assessment of
the A-league's position within the pecking order of Asian domestic competitions it was enviable
that the FFA would comment on the promotion/relegation issue.
I am generally a fan of Scott McIntrye's blog but his latest posting is way off the mark. Sometimes
you really do have to wonder if the folks at SBS are locked in the past.
Scott seems to be suggesting that the FFA needs to re-look at the timing of the A-league with a
view to move the League back to a winter competition.
Kashima Antlers' AFC Champions League chances have take a severe blow with the news that captain
Mitsuo Ogasawara will miss the rest of the season after suffering knee ligament damage in Kashima's
1-1 draw away at Kashiwa Reysol overnight.
The influential midfielder was stretchered from the field after colliding with Kashiwa's Alex in
the sixteenth minute, and there was more drama just three minutes later when Kashima fans appeared
to strike Alex with a flag-pole as the Brazilian midfielder lined up to take a corner.
Well what a night for Adelaide and Australian Football as a whole. Adelaide United turned in an
excellent performance to send Kashima out of the AFC Champions League and put themselves through to
the final four.
Aurelio Vidmar will be feeling justified for his strategy of resting a majority of his players in
last week's A-League game against Sydney.
It's been an emotional couple of weeks of Adelaide's Robbie Cornthwaite.
The club's foundation defender has not only found himself unwittingly dragged into a spitting storm
but he's also been the target of abuse from his own supporters for scoring a horror own goal in the
away leg of the AFC Champions League quarter-final against Kashima Antlers
But on Wednesday night in Adelaide, Cornthwaite banished all those demons with a tie-winning headed
goal which secured a 2-1 aggregate win over the 10-time Japanese champions and a passage into the
final four.
