Substitute Pipat Thonkanya came off the bench to fire Thailand to their first ever victory at the
AFC Asian Cup finals, scoring a second half brace as the hosts shocked a lacklustre Oman.
Thailand dominated the visitors but had to wait until the seventieth minute for Thonkanya to tap
home at the far post, following a superb cross from fellow substitute Teeratep Winothai.
The country of Iraq doesn't have much to bring it joy these days, however their national soccer
team is trying hard to change all that. The Iraqi squad beat Vietnam 2-0 in first knockout round of
the Asian Cup to advance to the semi-finals for the first time since 1976.
Hundreds of Iraqis swarmed out of their houses after the victory, waving their
country's flag and honking horns as men and boys jumped on top of minibuses and other
vehicles.
Kedah head coach Mohd Azrai Khor Abdullah is ready to put up a stronger Malaysian challenge for the
AFC Cup 2008.
As one of two Malaysian representatives in the AFC Cup next year, Azrai said that the Kedah side
wants to show that they have the ability to go far with the current side that they have built.
"I hope that the calendar which will be drawn up by the FA of Malaysia (FAM) will allow us to be
better prepared for the AFC Cup," said Azrai.
The FA of Malaysia (FAM) have extended their well-regard appreciation to Education Minister Dato'
Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein for stepping in to resolve the issues of the eight players involved
in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U19 qualifiers in November.
Dato' Azzuddin Ahmad, the general secretary of the FAM said that the national body is highly
appreciative of the cooperation from the Education Ministry in allowing the players to represent
the country and provide leeway for them to do so.
Earlier today, the Iraqi soccer team pulled off a great upset when they trashed Australia 3-1 in
the Asian Cup. This surprise victory sent people to the streets of Iraq in joy. They honked horns,
waved flags an all around enjoyed the moment.
"Despite all of what is happening, the most important thing for us is Iraq. Soccer unites Iraq.
Long live Iraq," a man shouted from inside his car before driving away.
The 2010 World Cup qualifiers technically begin on August 25 with the Pacific Games soccer
tournament, whose 3 medallists will join New Zealand in the OFC Nations Cup to determine who plays
the AFC's 5th for a berth in South Africa.
But the OFC is a joke, much more so since Australia's departure to the AFC last year. New Zealand
should easily win that half-berth, likely ending in swift capitulation against their playoff rival.

London must have been a formidable prospect for his first game in charge. Bolton and Arsenal began

I'm getting started again on a club of the week kind of feature. These teams aren't new to
Albion Road but I think they're worth highlighting and bringing into the spotlight a little. I plan
to feature on each Tuesday.
