We've been a bit lax about posting lately. Mea culpa and all that. I went on a bit of a medical
safari, travelling to Munich, Germany to have football-hero Dr. Muschaweck fix my chronic
groin/pelvic pain, caused by a double sports hernia, just like DC United Captain Jaime Moreno. And
former Newcastle captain Alan Shearer.
Mohamed Kallon, a striker from Sierra Leone. Tall, fast, not too old at 28, with a natural knack
for scoring goals. He was just a few months ago being linked to Portsmouth of the English Premier
League. This is really good stuff. Imagine this guy up top with Blanco. As you can see here, he
hasn't [.
Rivaldo finaly explains, in a little more detail, how and why he abandoned AEK for the football
hinterland of Uzbekistan. A few things to note about this article. First, Bunyodkor general
director Tavakkal Kadirovich is quoted as saying the negotiations took two months. SO basically as
soon as last season was over [.
The BBC and UEFA have picked up on this transfer. As I wrote on Monday, this is a good signing
for us, much more high profile than I expected during this transfer window. Let's hope Kallon
gets match fit quickly. We could certainly use him in the derbies as well as against Getafe in
February's UEFA [.
AEK has released Mohamed Kallon, the Sierra Leonne striker who was brought in during the winter
transfer window to boost our attack. Kallon did not make much of an impact and he reportedly
clashed with former gaffer Kostenoglou. No one seems particularly upset that he is going, but
I still think its a shame.
Today we open our league campaign with an intense derby against Athens rivals Panathinaikos. If we
win, we'll breathe a sigh of relief and begin to move past a disastrous pre-season that eliminated
us from the UEFA Cup. If we lose badly, it will confirm our worst fears. Anywhere in between will
require some analysis, [.
Remember all the Modise transfer talk over the Summer? It fell through, but we never knew well. Now
Modise has spoken out on the matter: "There were a lot of complications with the deal and I
can't exactly say what was so complicated about it, but it disturbed me a little bit, knowing very
[...]
Well, we can't complain about the officiating this time; we lost this one all on our own. We
started the season in such a promising manner. Six wins, six clean sheets. I really believed we
could do it. But how far we have fallen. We are lost. We have none of the composure we had
[...]
AEK have signed Argentinian Midfielder Augustin Pelletieri from Argentine football club Lanus.
SportinGreece.com has an article here
We tend to follow certain former AEK players on this blog, for a variety of reasons.
Sometimes, like with Papastathopoulos, we follow them because they are a club-produced talent
that gets recruited by a bigger team in a bigger country. Sometimes, as with Dellas and
Lyberopoulos, we follow them because they were AEK institutions.
AEK ended their second friendly of the preseason against German Second Division team Greuther
Furth in a 2-2 draw. AEK went down early on in the first minute and by the end of the scond half
they were down 0-2. Two goals however, in the 83rd and 85th minutes of the game allowed AEK to
catch [...]
We play Larissa F.C. tomorrow, Saturday, February 9th, at 9:45 am East Coast Time. I am very
nervous about this match, for the following reasons. First, Larissa are no push-overs. They
won the Greek Cup last year and had a okay run in this year's UEFA Cup, defeating Blackburn of the
EPL in the first round before losing [.
First Cesar, then Lybe, then Dellas and now Rivaldo. Whatever else you might think, AEK is looking
younger and younger! Seriously, what on earth is going on at AEK? We've had tremendous turn-over
this Summer. Even our Chairman has announced his intention of departing in May of 09. This kind of
instability [.
AEK ended their second friendly of the weekend with a 3-0 win. Panagiotis Lagos, Ismael Blanco, and
Panagiotis Zorbas scored. AEK next weekend play PAOK in Thessaloniki.
After multiple requests, here ya go: Arruabarrena to Kallon to Blanco for the equalizer. Good
stuff. There's hope for us yet.
The latest reports have Papastathopoulos, the 20 year old rising star, moving to Genoa (10th
in Serie A). This is hardly surprising as he has been rumored to be moving to a bigger club for
more than a year now. More surprising is the news that Kyrgiakos is set to be his replacement.
Kygriakos is pure [.
That seems to be the question on fans' minds these days. And there is no simple answer. A
quick look at the transfer market helps illustrate this question. Panathinaikos, for example,
made several multi-million dollar signings in the Summer such as star midfielder Marcelo Mattos and
are now bolstering their squad even further with the likes of [.
AEK striker Michalis Pavlis helped Greece's Under-19 team to a 1-1 draw with Italy for the first
games of the group stages. Pavlis put Greece up fairly early on and it looked like Greece were
going to start the group stages with three points but the referee awarded Italy a penalty
in the 89th minute which they [.
The young and talented Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos has signed for Genoa, a team in
Italy which currently plays in the Serie A. Many people have been expecting the move for a while
but it was finalized just last night. The defender had been previously linked with Wigan but
nothing ever came through with that [.
I know I said we should just pretend this never happened, but then I saw a statistic showing we had
the majority of possession. I also found some video clips that I think are worth sharing:
That isn't a horrible performance, is it? Sure, we lost. But the offense showed some
really nice one-touch passing.
Greece beat Finland2-1. UEFA has the report. AEK's new call-ups, Lagos and Papastathopoulos,
played both friendlies this week, which is a good sign for them. They are also being credited as
two of the best players on the pitch in yesterday's game. Also, the USA drew 2-2with Mexico. I
watched the game, but I'm not going [.
After a six week break, the next round of fixtures for the final group of 32 are fast approaching.
UEFA, in an article detailing new player registrations, had this to say about AEK and fellow Greek
club Panathinaikos: "Greek teams could also emerge as forces to be reckoned with – Mohamed Kallon
and Panagiotis Lagos have [.
How many days late with this am I? I guess just two. We played Xanthi Wednesday, lined up like
this: Kallon Blanco Rivaldo Lagos Edinho Kafes Bourbos Pliatsikas Papastathopoulos Dellas Macho And
though we didn't completely dominate the entire match, we played a better brand of football
overall.
ESPN here, and here is an AFP article with Rivaldo asking the fans' forgiveness but saying,
esstially, money talks, bullsh-t walks... Goal.com coverage here, and here the British paper the
Daily Mail rightly points out the irony in previously passing up stings at Tottenham and Bolton
only to end up at that footballing mecca knows as Uzbekistan.
AEK, having just dismissed coach Lorenzo Serra Ferrer, face Spanish-side Getafe tomorrow in the
UEFA Cup. AEK Assistant manager Nikos Kostenoglou will take over the team temporarily and try to
end AEK's mid-season slide with an emphatic win in Athens. Getafe defender David Belenguer claimed
in an interview today that Getafe's main goal will be to [.
The latest rumor to emerge is that AEK is very close to signing Skoda Xanthi's 22 year old
defensive midfielder Antonis Rikka. Rikka is an international with the Greek U-21 squad, was born
in France and started his football career in Marseille's junior team. During the summer of 2006 he
came to Greece to play for Skoda Xanthi, but during [.
Ignacio Scocco, an Aregentinian striker who played with Mexican club Pumas has signed with AEK for
three years at a price of 1.5 Million EUROs (although this price could be slightly less). He scored
23 goals for Pumas in 66 appearances. He should add to our amazing offence next year playing
alongside Argentine Ismael Blanco.
Hi. Alex, in Greece, and I, in the U.S., have both been inconvenienced by some of the
non-football-related aspects of our lives this week, so I apologize for the unprecedented four day
gap between posts. I'm back now, Alex too in a day or so, and we'll try to keep the site
current. You all [...
Not much to report on this one, thanks to an overzealous official sending off Gary Cahill early in
the match. I was looking forward to this friendly, but there just aren't many conclusion to draw
from beating a 10-man team 1-0. Our single goal can from Hetemaj in the 17th minute. Press [...]
Long time readers of this blog know I liked having Kallon on our team. He wasn't here long,
and he was certainly difficult to manage, but there is no denying the guy has a killer
instinct. Anyway, he's finally found a new team. Details here.
AEK drew their first of two friendlies this weekend 2-2. AEK played wusing the 4-4-2 formation. The
goals for AEK were scored by RAFIK DJEBOUR!! in the 5th minute and Pantelis Kafes in the 30th
minute. Augustin Pelletieri, according to some newspaper reports, still needs a bit of time to
adjust to the new formation.
AEK have yet to win away from home this season as they finished with a 1-1 draw Saturday evening
against Xanthi. Overall, 1 point is allright from a game against a team that has the potential to
win these kinds of matches. Basinas played in this match for AEK after coming back from injury.

Yesterday I reported we may be getting Valencia Defensive Midfielder Stephen Sunday on a six month
loan. Or maybe not. Elsewhere at Valencia, Sunny has turned down the opportunity to join AEK
Athens on loan until the end of the season as he wants to stay and fight for his place in Koeman's
side. Full story here.
We drew with Getafe, but our equalizer came four minutes into added time, mere seconds from the
final whistle. This was a close call and does not bode well for the return fixture in Madrid
later this month. We shouldn't be surprised. Something has been wrong with AEK since the
beginning of the year.
As I reported in my last post (below) Blanco came in as a sub and and saved the day. There is a
very good post-match report by UEFA here. Blanco is a crucial piece of the AEK equation. I just
looked at my first post on this blog, back at the start of November 2007, and [...]
This morning at 9:30 AM we palyed our rescheduled Matchday 21 game against Skoda Xanthi (this was
the game postponed by the freak snowstorm). And we won 3-0 with goals by Blanco, Cesar and
Edinho. Kallon also started and, from what I am hearing, had a spectacular game. This is
fantastic news. After work I will [.
Both Setanta and World Soccer News are reporting on Rivaldo's comments concerning Ronaldinho's
relationship with Barcelona, the club Rivaldo used to play for.
Just two weeks after obtaining the full rights to Ismael Blanco, AEK have officially acquired
the full rights to another powerful scorer and fan favorite, Arnaldo Edi Lopes da Silva, also known
as Edinho. He is happy that the AEK and Vitoria Setubal have agreed to this, claiming that he and
his family have adapted comfortably [.
It looks like we are getting what we need, Sebastian Saja, an establsihed top player between the
sticks. The San Lorenzo shot stopper was named Argentina's keeper of the year in 2002, but he
has strugged to find a permanent home since them. I found a clip on youtube: Good stuff.
Moretto (released) has been too error prone [.
AEK have agreed with KRC Genk on a price of 1.5 million Euros for AEK player Daniel Tozser. AEK
wishes the Hungarian good succes for the rest of his career. Daniel said he would like to someday
return to AEK since to him, AEK will always have a special part in his heart. The midfielder [...]
