At A Loss For Words

Just when you think you've seen it all in Greek football, something happens that makes you realize you haven't seen anything yet. What unfolded in Toumba today proved yet again that you can really never know what to expect when it comes to this league (though calling it a "league" would be a little too generous.

One Step Closer!

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

AEK took one huge step closer to the Championship today after beating Panionios 1-0 at home. However, it wasn't our victory alone but rather what happened with PAOK and Oly that has made the difference. Prior to our game today, Asteras clinched an unbelievable 3-2 over PAOK in the 98th minute, a minute after PAOK had made it 2-2 in the 97th minute.

Atromitos 1-1 AEK

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

So as you may have seen already, and as was mentioned in a comment in a previous point, the all important PAOK-Oly game was never played. I'm sure it comes as no surprise too that the reason was once again fan trouble from the PAOK fans.

Why would I bring this up in a post about a game between AEK and Atromitos?

Dynamo Kyiv 0-0 AEK

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

It just wasn't our day. Chance after chance, even a couple open nets, but nothing the team did could result in that crucial away goal that could have taken us through to the next round. The storyline was similar to what we saw last week: we controlled possession, had the better chances, but ultimately came up short in the end.

Where Do I Begin?

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

What a season this has been for us AEK supporters so far. Away from the blog for one week and I have not one, not two, but three incredibly important AEK stories to discuss. Whats more is that it all took place within the span of about four days. Lets start at the beginning though:

Last Thursday we faced Dynamo Kyiv in the Europa League Round of 32.

AEK 1-0 Asteras Tripolis

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

After two straight wins against Olympiakos, AEK would have gone in to today's game against Tripolis knowing the 3 points were anything but guaranteed. Sure enough, we had a much harder time today though I would argue a lot of that came from bad luck rather rather than having anything to do with the opponent we were facing.

It Just Doesn’t End! (AEK 2-1 Olympiakos)

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

For the 3rd time this season, Olympiakos have been outclassed in every way by an AEK team that seems to thrive when playing against our rivals. Today's match, which sealed our place in the Cup Semi-Finals, was the 4th time we've played Olympiakos this season and ensured we remain unbeaten against them after winning 3 and drawing 1 (our previous Cup game against them which ended 0-0 in Karaiskaki).

AEKARA!! (Olympiakos 1-2 AEK)

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

Greek derbies... you gotta love them! You never know what can happen and with the way AEK has played this season, expecting anything but the unexpected is just foolish.

So when AEK were down 1-0 in Karaiskaki, with under ten minutes to go, all one had to do was remember our 3-2 come from behind win earlier this season to get some hope that the same thing could happen again.

AEK 2-0 Lamia

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

And just like that, were back in the race. Thanks to our 2-0 win against Lamia and Olympiakos' 1-1 draw in Tripolis, only two points separate 1st and 3rd. As it stands, we currently sit 3rd with 41 points, behind Olympiakos on 42 and PAOK on 43. Its safe to say we haven't seen a top 3 that was this close in as long as I can remember and it certainly sets up a high stakes encounter when we face Olympiakos in Karaiskaki this coming weekend.

Olympiakos 0-0 AEK

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

So we played the first quarter final game two days ago, our first of three games against Olympiakos within two weeks. A win would have been nicer for sure but overall I guess a draw isn't a terrible result. Like Jimenez said, a 1-1 draw would have been ideal, but I guess we'll still be able to go into the game next match with a decent chance of going through.

Larissa 0-0 AEK

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

So that was disappointing...

At least the result doesn't signal the end of the road for us just yet. The 1 point we managed to salvage is still a big one as it still keeps us within reach of first, but I think its fair to assume these draws are starting to become a bit tiring. Yesterday's result marks our fifth draw so far this campaign.

AEK 3-1 PAS Giannena

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

Our strong start to 2018 continued with another win, this time against 11th placed PAS Giannena. Overall it was a fairly decent game, but Giannena did manage to tie the match at 1-1 for a while which resulted in some uncertainty. Ultimately though, despite the generally slow pace to the match, our finishing was critical enough when we needed it to be.

Panetolikos 1-4 AEK

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

Well its certainly nice to be back! Don't get me wrong, I love the holidays, and getting back to work and the daily routine that comes with it wasn't all that exciting but hey, if theres one good thing to take from this time of year, its the fact that we get to watch AEK again!

This year especially is an exciting time since for the first time in as long as I can remember, we start a new year with a legitimate chance at a Championship.

Back To Winning Ways

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

After a less than ideal weekend, our football and basketball teams got back to winning ways in the Cup and Champions League respectively. For our football side, it was a 4-0 away win against Panaitolikos that all but secures us a place in the next round courtesy of goals from Lazaros, Bakasetas, Galo, and Giakoumakis.

AEK 0-0 Apollon Smyrnis

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

Just like that, after what was a great weekend all around for AEK last week, we're brought back to down to earth with one of our most disappointing results of the season. I don't know what it is exactly about Apollon, but they've given us a hard time the past few times we played them and Saturday was no exception.

AEK 3-1 Kerkyra

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

After another weekend of wins for Oly, PAOK, and Atromitos, the pressure was on AEK again today to get a win. Sure enough, they delivered yet again and for another week remain on top. Its still a fragile lead, with only one point separating us and Oly, but as long as we keep getting results I can't complain.

AEK in the Round of 32!

AEK Archives at related • 1 view

After finishing the group stages undefeated, AEK are in the Europa League Round of 32! Its worth remembering too that this was our first time playing in the group stages of a European Cup since before we fell to the 3rd division.

Management and the team both deserve credit for what they accomplished since even though we might not have won as many games as we would have liked, it was a solid performance in the group stages that even brought us close to beating Milan twice.

Levadeiakos 0-2 AEK

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

Another week and we're still top of the league. Its still far too close for comfort but does it ever feel good.

With the way the standings are right now, every match is a crucial as the one before and today was no exception after both Oly and PAOK won on Saturday. The match went according to plan for the most part, though Levadeiakos were a pretty stubborn side to break down for much of the first half.

Another Catching Up Post

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

So I've been away from my computer for the past couple of weeks which accounts for the lack of posts recently. Having said that, its been a busy two weeks for the team, so I'll go over whats happened on the pitch (and off it) in the time between now and my last post.

I'll start with our derby against PAO two weekends ago.

I've met many people throughout my relatively young life who simply were not into sports. One thing I often hear from some of these people is that they don't understand the point of supporting a team, of spending so much of your time and energy towards a team, when you know the chances of ever winning a championship are relatively slim.

AEK 0-0 Milan

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

Another game against Milan, and another scoreless draw. Would a win have been nice? Oh definitely, especially after watching the highlights and realizing we had more than our fair share of chances to score. Still though, there are some key points to take away from these past two games:

  1. We're still undefeated, four games into the group stages.

Panionios 0-1 AEK

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

Well that was a little too close for comfort. It wasn't until 80 minutes in to the game that we got the winning goal by Araujo but the 3 points are what matter most as far as I'm concerned.

This game was a crucial one for a few reasons. First of all we desperately needed a win seeing as its been weeks since we've won a match in the league and my confidence in the team was starting to take a hit.

AEK 0-1 Atromitos

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

After managing a rather respectful result in Milan last week, we got this week started off with an embarrassing result in Athens. A win today would have put us back in 1st but instead we find ourselves in 3rd with 3 other teams even on points.

It was a game we should have won on paper and judging from the stats, we really should have found a way to put at least one goal in the back of the net.

Milan 0-0 AEK

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

Facing Milan in the San Siro is never an easy task, especially not against a Milan team that on paper looks to be stronger than in previous seasons. Today though, AEK showed no fear in what was the hardest match of the Europa League group stages and instead executed a game plan that stifled Milan and even lead to some good chances of our own.

Xanthi 1-1 AEK

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

After our first loss of the season to Tripolis a couple weeks ago, its safe to say we were all hoping for a bounce back win to get our title push back on track. Well, all we got instead was a rather disappointing 1-1 draw. The point helps keep us within reach of PAOK as we only sit one point behind them in 2nd, but a win would have been just enough to keep us in 1st.

AEK 2-2 Austria Wien

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

Not the result we were all hoping for considering the form we were in coming into the game, but all things considered it isn't all that bad either. Milan's narrow 3-2 win against Rijeka today means we're still somewhat comfortably in 2nd place, 2 points behind Milan and 3 ahead of Wien.

Without having seen the game, it seems as though there are a few important points to highlight from the game:

  • The team were clearly tired.

AEK 2-0 Lamia

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

After facing Lamia for the second time in less than a week, we managed to come away with yet another win with a slightly more convincing scoreline.

I'm just watching the game now and while it might not have been the best game we've played this season, it wasn't an awful performance. More importantly, it gets us an important first win in the Cup against a team that is the toughest opponent in our group (with the other two being Kallithea and Apollon Larissa).

Lamia 0-1 AEK

A late (and somewhat fortunate) penalty turned out to be the difference for AEK after a game which saw many chances but few goals thanks to some great goalkeeping by Lamia's Papadopoulos.

It wasn't a great game but it did provide some entertainment as both sides had their chances to score.

Catching Up…

Its been a few weeks since my last post and as is often the case early on in a season, lots has happened. Luckily for us, things have been going pretty well so most of what I have to talk about is good news.

PAS Giannena 0-0 AEK

We've played three games since my last post, the first of which was a disappointing draw away against Giannena.

AEK 3-0 Brugge

Back in the Group Stages After Six Years

Its been six years since AEK last played in the group stages of the Europa League but that droubt will soon be coming to an end. After a dominant performance in Athens, AEK have confirmed their return and they made sure to make a statement with today's match.

Catching Up

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

Its been quite a while since my last post and quite a bit has happened since then so I'll go through a recap of the major stories below.

CSKA Eliminate AEK from Champions League

So our much anticipated return to the Champions League, albeit in the qualifying rounds, was a disappointment. Everyone expected CSKA to be a tough team to come up against and truth be told they were the stronger team.

AEK Set To Face CSKA

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

The day many of us have been awaiting patiently (more likely rather impatiently) has finally arrived. In less than 24 hours from the publishing of this post, AEK will have finally played a Champions League game, the first in essentially a decade.

Our opponent for this 3rd qualifying round match is the Moscow based club CSKA.

Pre-Season Friendlies Have Begun

AEK Archives at related • 2 views

Its that time of year again, where we start to get a first look at how the team might line up this season. Of course, theres only so much we can gather from these games as the experimental lineups and lower pace don't provide an accurate representation of how we'll play when the season properly starts, but it gives us a good look at some of our recent signings and what we can expect of them.

Transfers So Far

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

With the team having recently arrived in Poland for pre-season training, there have already been moves taken with the hopes of strengthening the squad for our return to the Champions League.

In my opinion the biggest move we've made so far was the re-singing of Jimenez. There was some uncertainty about a month or so ago regarding whether we'd hold onto Jimenez for at least another season but the team has cleared that up after a new deal was agreed.

AEK Returns to Champions League

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

After a ten year absence, AEK has the chance to book a place in the group stages of the Champions League next season. Of course it wont be easy as there is the potential of some big clubs standing in our way, but even just the chance to see us play in some Champions League qualifiers is an exciting prospect.

After beating our Athenian rivals with a score of 1-0 over the weekend, they returned the favour with a 1-0 win of their own courtesy of a Leto penalty. I was following along to the commentary and while we had a few chances of our own, it seemed like a very lackluster performance overall from AEK.

AEK 1-0 Panathinaikos

AEK Archives at related • 1 view

We managed to come away with the three points at the last minute yesterday against PAO, courtesy of a late goal from Lazaros against his former club. The win follows our disappointing home 0-1 home loss to Panionios, a performance which saw us create very few noteworthy chances.

Luckily we got the better result yesterday against PAO, a result which puts us in first place in the playoffs courtesy of PAOK's 1-0 win against Panionios.

A Return to Better Days

If you're reading this, you probably noticed that I never wrote anything about our 2-1 loss to PAOK in the Cup final. Really it came down to not wanting to write anything since that game was a disaster from before kickoff. It started with the terrible organization, with the game almost being cancelled since the seats didn't have numbers on them.

AEK 0-1 Olympiakos

AEK Archives at related • 0 views

The other day, Fourtounis made a comment claiming that on Wednesday (today), Olympiakos would "show which team is the best". Now I'm kind of confused about this because surely, "the best" team would be the team that made it to the Cup Final? But in this case, Olympiakos didn't in fact make it to the Final, so how can they be the best?

Olympiakos 1-2 AEK

On AEK's 93rd birthday, we were treated to an incredibly important win, one which sees us put a foot into the Cup Finals. As Jimenez said today, the future of this team is bright and what we've seen up to and including our victory in Karaiskaki, I see no reason at all for us not to go ahead and win the Cup for a second straight season.
