This past week has been a whirlwind for Fire fans. We had the MLS SuperDraft hoopla last week
with a couple of new player signings sprinkled in (Robayo and Puppo). On the heels of that we had a
sponsor announcement and new jersey unveiling. Somewhat lost in the shuffle was the announcement of
the changes to the U.
The US Soccer Federation has approved a major change to the US Open Cup. A change that will
certainly enhance how the tournament is played in the US.
The competition will feature a Modern Professional Era (1995-present) record 64 teams, including
every US-based professional club in the American soccer pyramid from Major League Soccer (16
teams), the North American Soccer League (6 teams), and USL PRO (10 teams).

The 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will much different than any of its predecessors.
U.S. Soccer announced a number of changes for the 99th edition of the tournament. Those changes

home teams from the opening round until the quarterfinals, and the inclusion of all professional
teams from the top three divisions, meaning the MLS qualifying bracket is no more.
Ilya Ksenidi (West Allis Hale/UW-Green Bay) scored late in extra time and was one of five

the Kickers will be the host.
Tonight there will be held the longest running US soccer tradition, the US Open Cup Final.
Almost 100 years of soccer tradition and almost no one knows about it or even cares. I really
started thinking about the US open cup because of the fact that a lot of supporters from our hated
rival like to point out that they have won the thing twice now and are in the final tonight.

And the finals for both the Men's Under-23 and Women's teams followed the same storyline –
much to the dismay of the Franklin club.
Each Croatians team took the lead, but ended up dropping up 2-1 decisions in Overland Park,
Kan.

Once the trophies have been lifted in emphatic triumph then dropped by players unaccustomed
to using their hands, the victors' confetti is swept aside along with the memories of the previous
season to open an extended summer of whispers. While the Home Nations do have the odd European
qualifier or international friendly over the summer and clubs partake in pre-season matches after
the players enjoy a few weeks on holiday, most of this summer's action will be taking place out of
the public eye as club managers haggle with player agents over transfer fees, battle creditors for
unpaid services from last year, and contradict the media which are rumouring on what they are doing
in the absence of actual football.
