I am a founding officer for the Union Football League, an AYSO-affiliated adult league which plays near downtown Los Angeles. When we heard that the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) would field a team during our first season we were a bit wary.

The field is smack in the middle of Pico-Union, and right down the street from the new police station.

If you play soccer or are a fan, you know why it's called the Beautiful Game. Soccer is a global language that has the power to unify people. Last weekend, a group of players got together in Los Angeles so that others around the world can have the opportunity to play as well.

The event, called Play Soccer So They Can, was organized by Opportunitas Aequas (Latin for "Equal Opportunity), a non-profit, grassroots organization that uses soccer to build stronger communities for youth affected by war and violence.

One of the time-honored, post-match traditions of adult league soccer leagues is to head to the pub and have a pint or two (or three). Many believe that beer and other alcohol-containing drinks actually aid recovery. The argument is that alcohol is a carbohydrate and carbohydrates help replenish energy stores.
