I just wanted to include a link to an article that is in the recent issue of ESPN Magazine on
Freddy Adu. Its a wonderful article by Carmen Renee Thompson that gives a great account of the
pressures that Freddy Adu has had to face and how his development is coming along. All the way
through the article she reminds us that he just turned 19 years old and still has plenty of time to
develop his skill and become the star American player that we are all hoping for.
I just wanted to include a link and comment on this article by Kartik Krishnaiyer on the Major
League Soccer Talk blog about Sven Goran Eriksson's early success with the Mexican national team
and how the U.S. National Team could learn from that. I essentially agree that Eriksson has done a
good job with Mexico and that I too was somewhat skeptical about this appointment when it was made.
Bob Bradley named the squad that is going to face Guatemala in the upcoming World Cup qualifier and
while looking through the roster the question that comes to my mind is - don't we have a better
team then this? Hasn't the time for Eddie Lewis, Frankie Hejduk, and Pablo Mastroeni come and gone?
Who is being looked to as the main goalscorer - Landon Donovan?
This article from the New York Times where John Harkes outlines his concerns about the U.S National
Team is very interesting, and also happens to echo a lot of the same things that I've been writing
about. Basically the premise is that while the U.S. has gotten the results that it had needed, they
still is room for improvement, especially in attack.
Manchester United's starlet Danny Welbeck netted a spectacular goal this weekend against Stoke! Now
the Ghana Football Association are hoping to persuade Welbeck to represent the birth place of his
parents. Although Welbeck was born in England and has already represented the English
national team at the youth level.

With just two days between Thursday's 1-0 victory against Japan, and Sunday's showdown vs. the
Netherlands, U.S. Olympic men's soccer coach Peter Nowak has some tough decisions to make.
Grant Wahl from Sports Illustrated wrote an excellent analysis of the U.S. - Holland game in this
article. I have to say though that I still can't believe that GERALD SIBON of all people is the
Dutch player to beat that U.S. team. This is the same Gerald Sibon who has bounced around Europe
playing for Sheffield Wednesday, Nurenburg, and various teams in the Dutch Eredivise.
Here's a link to an article that contains the U.S. National Team's squad for the upcoming World Cup
qualifiers against Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago. The squad looks very similar to the recent one
that was called up for the Guatemala game and I still would like to see some different players
included. I don't really know what is accomplished by including Brian Ching, Eddie Lewis, and
Frankie Hejduk.

si se trata de Cuba mas.
Here's an email I got about my Adu article.
I have just read your article about Freddy Adu's kind of frozen status at Benfica and I think he
should find himself a team where he would be playing regularly , a mid-table team in any of the top
leagues and he should shelve his dreams about playing for the Man Uniteds and the Barcelonas of
this world for now.
Here is Jack Bell's article from the New York Times that reviews each player's performance in the
game with a rating scale of 1-10, which is commonly done in soccer. To begin, I believe that Jack's
ratings vary a bit too much. Its usually pretty rare that players on the same team get a score of 3
and also 8.
US 1-0 Barbados
In a game that saw the favorites look tired and even more defensive minded then normal, the
underdogs had their chance to run the game. But unlike the Italy-Spain Euro match, the US was able
to see their opposition out of the competition.
Yesterday's game was a flashback for me as right from the opening moments, it reminded me of some
late-80's games due to the horrible video production.
Here is a link to a recent interview that Freddy Adu conducted with ESPN where he mainly discusses
life at his new club Monaco.

I did stay up to watch this one the other day. The thoughts are coming late 'cause I've been
working like crazy recently.
Anyways, I came upset that Adu and Bradley has disqualified themselves from the match.
That anger went exponential when freakin' Orozco -- who I never want to see again -- throws a
stupid elbow like a petulant child to get ejected.
I really enjoyed watching the US team emerge with a convincing victory against Canada tonight to
earn their way into the Olympics this summer. The team has definitely shown improvement in each
match. Makes you wonder how well we'll actually do in Beijing against the top world powers, because
right now, a pretty good run certainly looks possible.
U23 qualifying semifinals for the Olympics took place in Nashville tonight. The final score was USA
3 Canada 0. TFC players involved were Maurice Edu and Marvell Wynne for the USA and Tyler Hemmings
for Canada. Andrea Lombardo came on as a substitute in the second half and Josh Wagenner who
recently had a trial with TFC was the Canadian keeper.
Well, it wasn't pretty, but we ground out another win on the road and this time around I think
there were a few more positives trickled through the match. Sure, our lineup still lacked the
youth and excitement that so many of us dream of (Jozy, Cooper, Adu), but there were some strong
performances on [.
We ran into a high quality download of the full USA vs Trinidad and Tobago game from last

Freddy after the Barbados match explained that going in for Mastroeni was unexpected. He recovered,
though, and went on to play well in the second half of the match.

Holland:
Vermeer, Zuiverloon, Marcellis, Jaliens, De Guzman, Emanuelson, Maduro, Drenthe, Bakkal, Babel,
Beerens
U.S.
Guzan, Wynne, Edu, Parkhurst, Orozco, Rogers, Bradley, Kljestan, Holden, Adu, McBride
Nowak is growing some facial scruff - a VanDyke I guess.
Based on everyone's -- but the U.S. team's -- expectations going in, a tie would've warranted the
celebration pictured above (which was Altidore's go-ahead strike, man I love that photo).
Sadly in extra-time equalizer from the Dutch would keep the champagne bottles on ice for a couple
more days.
...but am not a good enough writer to communicate. Here you go, I suggest checking it out.
He's right you know. Commentator Marcelo Balboa said during the Dutch telecast something to the
effect of "get your yellow card suspension over with now before the quarterfinals" I have
to respectfully disagree.
Here's a snip of my interview with Josmer Altidore, where he talks about playing with Landon
Donovan and Freddy Adu.
On a day that can be considered the official start to the 2008 US Soccer season, I've been trying
to brainstorm a new player rating system to use in postgame reviews. Numbers and letter grades just
seem so trite. So instead we'll use a more original player rating system that is based on something
with which I'm proud to have quite a bit of experience: liquor.

US Coach Bob Bradley has taken most of the players from his recent three-match run against world powers to take on lowly Barbados on Sunday at the Home Depot Center (5p ET, ESPN2). The roster...
G: Cervi, Guzan, Howard
D: Bocanegra, Califf, Cherundolo, DeMerit, Hejduk, Oneywu, Pearce
M: Adu, Beasley, Bradley, Edu, Klejstan, Lewis, Mastroeni
F: Ching, Dempsey, Donovan, Johnson
My probables to take on the 121st-ranked Barbadans.

The Olympics are set to kick off for the U.S. men's national team on Thursday morning against
Japan, which means that in less than two days we will know who head coach Peter Nowak has chosen to
start.
Much Adu about nothing Bradley 1-0 Adu....
Andrew: It was a satisfactory win for the US this morning against Japan. In the early stages of the
game, our boys seemed to be stringing together some good combinations from the midfield to the
forwards through Adu and McBride. My biggest gripe with this game was our outside backs, or well
just one in particular; [.
I have to hand it to Bob Bradley and the U.S. National Team, they really came through and took care
of business with the 3-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago. We even got to see a goal from Brian Ching
so you know it was a terrific night. Clint Dempsey got his 4th goal in 4 matches. The defense
looked really solid and Michael Bradley took his European success and showed what the hype was all
about with a nice goal.
Some good and some bad from the "Friendly" match last night.
Despite all the criticism, and all the emergence of new talent, Landon Donovan proved again in the
first half that he was still the best player on the field. And actually, for the first time in a
long time, I'm pretty satisfied with the offense on the USMNT.
Dax McCarty from USSoccer.com
Peter Nowak swapped one Floridian for another as Dax McCarty replaces the injured Nathan Sturgis
on the US squad. This leaves Nowak with only four natural defenders on the squad which leaves for
Hong Kong and pre Olympic training tomorrow.
Sorry, this start time is painful on the West Coast.

I stayed up to 2 a.m. my time to watch the start of this one. Sadly after a listless first half I
couldn't stay up to watch the second.
I hear Stuart Holden (above) banged home the winner in the 47th minute.
ESPN's Carlisle and SI's Wahl have some more info for ya.
A couple things that stood out: Altidore and Feilhaber benched, Edu kicks ass, Adu was lost and
McBride was just, eh.
After the three "glamor friendles" against Argentina, Spain, and England, the US Men's
National Team finally sets off on the long road leading to South Africa and the 2010 World Cup. Bob
Bradley and Co. welcome Barbados to the Home Depot Center in Carson, California for the first leg
of a home-and-away series.

Bits and pieces of what I've read and wondered about recently.
The Tennessee Waltz with soccer - some are left out of the dance.
Was anyone wondering what Tim Lovejoy was up to since David Beckham's Soccer USA ended? Well, he's
still involved with Becks' management company. They're partnering on a new venture.
A great move for Freddy Adu as he is loaned to Monaco from Benfica for a season. I'm sure if things
work out its quite possible that Freddy's loan could be made into a permanent move or could lead to
another club purchasing him. It just didn't seem like Freddy was truly wanted by the Benfica coach
Quique Flores' and he's much better off playing for Monaco in the French league hopefully as a
starter then sitting on the bench for the season at Benfica.
Maurice Edu is gonna be a great player. Maybe better than Adu and Altidore -- who looked pretty
pedestrian at the Olympics.
Goff is reporting that the young American could be headed to Rangers F.C. of Glasgow soon.
I am told the transfer fee would approach $5 million. It's not a done deal, but the
sides are apparently nearing an agreement.
