Freddy Adu comes on for his first minutes for Benfica.
For some time now, I'd given up on Freddy Adu as the "Hope" of U.S. soccer - but I've stayed
hopeful about what I've seen as a trend of more creative and skilled players, of which I count
Freddy as one of the brightest stars.
Watching the Poland match, I think he proved that to be true.
This time, it's the winning goal.
Grant Wahl's interview has the scoop on a Galaxy advisor to young Freddy Adu. Abel Xavier helped
him make the decision to go to Benfica.
Xavier played against Real Salt Lake and Adu this season and was asked what he thought of the young
player.
"It is clear that he has skill. He needs to go to a high level, though, to test that skill.
The FIFA U-20 World Cup starts Saturday in Canada, with Argentina, Brazil, Spain as favorites as
always thanks to their consistently superb work at the youth level, plus Mexico, whose basis should
be the U-17 world champions of 2005. The group stage qualifies 2/3 of the teams to the knockout
stages, so don't expect full-strength play or surprise eliminations.
Freddy Adu broke out in a big way against Poland. He scored three goals in a 6-1 rout. Only two of
them are up on YouTube.

Anelka has signed a 4 year contract extension to stay on Sammy Lee's side:
Bolton chalked up their first win of the season at the weekend by beating Reading with Anelka
making it three goals in four games.
He said: "I seem to have been linked with every club in the country of late but my heart is with
Bolton.
"I am very happy with my form, the club and the manager so signing a new contract was not a
difficult decision.

Yeah, I know this was a couple of days ago, but I hadn't seen Freddy Adu's latest goal for Benfica
until now. It's a pretty good one. Hopefully, it will earn him more playing time. He's going to
need some to make the Olympic team next year.
