Adelaide United took a giant stride towards their first AFC Champions League final on Wednesday.
The Australians scored three second-half goals to crush Uzbeki giants FC Bunyodkor Kuruvchi 3-0 in
their semi-final first leg, ensuring a handy buffer when they travel to Tashkent for the return tie
on October 22.
Defending champs Urawa Red Diamonds had the upper hand as they hosted Gamba Osaka in the semifinal
of the Asian CL semifinals today, having drawn in Osaka through The Almighty Away Goal. They made
it 2-1 in the first half, but 45 minutes and some shoddy corner defending later, Gamba were through
to their first [.

emotion truly,)get even.

ADELAIDE UNITED YOUTH TEAM COMING TOGETHER
Adelaide United FC has added to its crop of talent for the National Youth League with Coach Joe
Mullen selecting another four players into The Reds' Youth League squad.
When Celtic became the first British team to win the European Cup in 1967 with all 11 players born
within 30 miles of the Stadium, we beat Inter Milan 2-1 btw after being a goal down, it marked
history. I still mention it today to all my EPL fans:)
Man United, Liverpool or even Notts Forest have never been able to take that title the away from
us.
Adelaide United fans celebrate last nights historic win. But how many people will turn-up for the
Semi Final, they're already talking about switching venues to cope with the crowd...
And whilst Australia and particularly Canberra has been slow to grasp the opportunities that Asia
can provide to football, to the city and the region; our own A-League side would benefit the
city/region like no other sport.
In an all J-League battle, Gamba Osaka stunned defending AFC Champions League holder Urawa Reds 3-1
away to reach their first Asian Champions League final today. Gamba will face Adelaide United
in next month's final after the Australian side completed a 3-1 aggregate victory over Zico's
Bunyodkur in Tashkent in the other semi-final.
Adelaide United are the first Australian team to make it to the Asian Champions League Final, where
they faced Gamba Osaka in the first leg today. So you can imagine the weight of expectation.
Unfortunately, the A-Leaguers pretty much threw away the trophy with two criminally slack passes.
Young Scott Jamieson played a square pass in [.
Talk of the town is that Lucas Pantelis has been discussing his options with the Melbourne Victory
recently. The 25-year old midfielder, who has been with Adelaide United since the start of the
A-League, may be after a change of scenery when his contract runs out with Adelaide in January. If
he is signed, Pantelis would be [.
Melbourne Victory drew its second friendly with Adelaide United yesterday, after beating the South
Australians last week with a 2-1 win. A goal for Danny Allsopp and a penalty converted by
Adelaide's Cassio left the teams at 1-1. With Leigh Broxham away with the Olyroos, and Nick Ward
and Carlos Hernandez injured, Ernie Merrick opted for a [.
The Olyroos will take on Croatia, Chile and Adelaide United in coming weeks. On top of the
International tournament in Malaysia later in the month the schedule is starting to look
healthy.
Hey Mark Milligan might even fit a few games in before the Olympics at this rate....that's right
for the Olyroos not Arsenal:)
Quarter Finals of the Asian Champions League kick-off tonight with Australia's first club, Adelaide
United, to get to this stage of the competition away in Japan against Kashima Antlers.
Two-legged affair so United will need to score against what should be a very strong Japanese side
and a big big test for Adelaide.
Well it's not the AFL Club's, Adelaide Crows or Port Adelaide. They might have been going 150 years
but who's heard of them outside Melbourne:)
Is there even a Rugby League or Union side from Adelaide?
Adelaide United a club just a few years old, already well known across Pohang, Korea, Changchun,
China and Kashima, Japan.
In case you don't have Fox and wondering what the heck I'm going on about in AFL/NRL Grand Final
week(s), here's the video of the Adelaide goal.
And who would have thought that five years ago Adelaide newspapers and media would be front and
back page football in Grand Final week.
Tonight in Adelaide, new football, takes another step. Appropriately, to me, it is a team from the
old NSL playing in a stadium used in the old NSL, that will take us to a place this game, in this
country, has never ever been.
Semi-Final time. Of the Asian Champions League.
Whatever your sporting passion, when there is a prize on the line, the crowd swells, and the
intensity lifts.
Adelaide off to Japan via Tashkent?
Football is a funny game, none more so than in Adelaide tonight. A Rivaldo led Bunyodkor side
silenced the pack crowd with a fluent and flowing performance at Hindmarsh Stadium last night.
At half-time United hadn't had a shot, not one.
TOKYO - Japanese giants Gamba Osaka brushed past Australian A-League side Adelaide United of 3-0 in
the first leg of the Asian Champions League final today. Brazilian striker Lucas put the Gamba in
front in the 37th minute as he sprung Adelaide United's offside trap before finding the net with a
deflected shot.
Adelaide United's Shaun Ontong is expected to sign for the Newcastle Jets this week.
Former Australian Under 20 Captain Ontong was given a lifeline last season by United after
difficult times overseas. Limited game time, however, has probably meant he's keen to move to a
club where prospects of playing are increased.

It's Adelaide United' chance to make history..tonight.
Finals football in September, and midweek to boot. Great news. So put away your Hawks and Geelong
scarves until the weekend, it's time to support the mighty Aussies, the mighty Reds.
And looking good for a sell-out withover 12,000 tickets pre-sold.
Japanese club Gamba Osaka won the Asian Champions League when they beat Adelaide United 2-0 in
Adelaide on Wednesday. The J. League side tallied a 5-0 aggregate against the Australians. The
Australian side's hopes of overcoming a 3-0 deficit incurred in Japan were thrashed when striker
Lucas scored twice within the opening 15 [.
So it happened. The Newcastle Jets beat the Central Coast Mariners on Saturday, meaning that the
faint dream of Melbourne reaching the finals is now over. I published an article on Newsvine last
week, called "The Problem with the Asian Champions League". As I pointed out in that article, the
Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United are [.
The Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United will be playing each other twice before the Asian
Champions League begins, and then two more times during the group stage. Hardly surprising news,
but it is disappointing to hear that the matches will be behind closed doors, much like the
Socceroos practice match on the weekend.
Ran into a few sad sacks this week grumbling that there was no football to watch as the A-League is
over.
But the smile started to return when I mentioned the Asian Champions League starting on
Wednesday.
Live on Fox, Melbourne Victory take on Chunnam Dragons (China) and then Adelaide take on Pohang
Steelers (Korea).

Adelaide taking their city to Asia, and I ain't talking about the Crows!
Anyone who saw Urawa Reds or Gamba Osaka take on Sydney and Melbourne in previous Asian Champions
League encounters will have expected the cashed up Japanese club Kashima Antlers to give Adelaide a
good thumping in the home game of the Asian Champions League Quarter Finals.
Wednesday night watch Adelaide United take on Japanese Champions Kashima Antlers for their historic
place in the Asian Champions League Semi-Finals. First leg was 1-1.
And interestingly they've been getting front and back page coverage in the Adelaide newspapers.
Even in AFL finals time.
It won't be easy but The Reds certainly are in with a great chance after last weeks, if not
Satuday's, performance.
Were you watching Perth and Wellington?
Canberra Ref Ben Williams sent-off Carlos Hernandez last week.....for what I'm still unsure, but
last night it got worse...that said the Mariners proved why they are the biggest little team in the
league....once more.
Ben Williams gifted Adelaide a penalty in the 6th minute.
I remember watching Celtic defeat Real Madrid 2-0 in the home leg in 1984 in the old European Cup.
Despite Laurie Cunningham's dazzling bending corners and a Scottish team nearly all home grown
Celtic not only managed to beat the Mighty Madrid but beat them by 2-0.
There was bedlam in Glasgow that night!
You probably missed it because it took place in the middle of the night in American time but the
FIFA Club World Cup kicked off in Japan over night and Australian champions Adelaide United got off
to a flying start by beating New Zealand side Waitekere United, 2-1, on Thursday.
Adelaide United will now face Gamba Osaka in a rematch of the Asian Champions League final won
by Gamba Osaka, 5-0, last month.

Asian Champions League home ground, 10,500.

Quote of the game:
"The spine is all Foreign," said Fox Sports Commentator Mike Cockerill talking about the Changhun
Yatai side.
Melbourne Victory and Adelaide United fought out a 2-2 draw yesterday in Hindmarsh Stadium. With
both teams missing a key striker (Adelaide are without Bruce Djite due to injury), the scoreline
will provide encouragement for both coaches. Adrian Caceres, who moved into a striker's role
alongside Danny Allsopp, opened the scoring in the 5th minute.
Dramatic football in Liverpool this morning as Liverpool beat Arsenal 4-2 in the all-English Euro
Champions League clash.
Melbourne Victory will need the same passion, spirit, if they are to win their crucial Asian
Champions League qualifier tonight against Japanese side Gamba Osaka.
Can Victory do it?
Asian Champions League tonight.
Both games live on Fox at the same time, 7:30pm!
Adelaide to win 3-0 against Vietnamese side Binh Duong, And Melbourne to lose 4-1 in Japan.
Adelaide are clearly a great chance to go through with two home games followed by the probable
group decider against Changchun Yatai on the last day.
Shaun Ontong has joined the Newcastle Jets for next season.
Adelaide United FC , midfielder Shaun Ontong and has been released by the club. United Coach
Aurelio Vidmar informed Ontong that he would not be part of the club's 2008/09 plans once his
contracts expire in June.
A former Qantas Young Socceroos Captain, Ontong managed 9 appearances in his debut Hyundai A-League
Season, the 21 year old winning Adelaide United's Best Team Man Award along the way.
The Weekender is a football article written every week by anyone. Today it's me. It covers Canberra
football or football in it's broadest sense. It's aim is to ensure Canberrans can wake up on a
Saturday to an article re:football written by one of their own.
With 17,000 players that's the least we deserve!
Success breeds...well possibly failure in Adelaide United's case.
Bruce Djite to FC Twente, Nathan Burns to a Norwegian Backwater, Cassio out for the whole season,
Richie Alagich retired, Paul Agostino may or may not play each week, or any week. Things are
looking bleak for Adelaide United in Season 4 if the above comes to fruition.
