Togo National Team Attacked on way to ANC Cup
The Togo National team bus was attacked by gunmen on their way to the African Nations Cup, the
driver was killed, and two players were hit by bullets, goalkeeper Obilale Kossi, and Serge Akakpo.
The news started coming through early on Saturday morning and as the information became clearer,
it was soon apparent that the whole African Cup Of Nations would now be tainted. When the dust had
settled, 3 members of the Togo party were dead and several were seriously injured. Angolan rebels
had attacked the team bus as it drove through the dangerous territory of Cabinda.
Scott over at Republik of Mancunia has an excellent comparative analysis of Adebayor
(ex-Arsenal) and Tevez (ex-Manchester United) and their actions since joining Manchester City.
As Scott rightly points out, many players have less than pleasant exits from their clubs, but if
the departed player makes it a point to taunt / talk about his old club again and again and again,
then that player's head is not screwed on right.
Everton manager David Moyes has sent home Brazilian striker Jo after he travelled back to this
hometown. Seeking permission from his club was something he ignored, and has been punished by being
sent back to Manchester City. It's unlikely that he'll get much of a game at Man City with Santa
Cruz, Adebayor, Tevez, Bellamy, Benjani and Robinho all pushing for a first team place.
Is this Arsenal's next Adebayor?
Arsene Wenger is looking to dip into his coffers to buy a striker this January. With Van Persie
injured and not another adequate replacement in the centre forward position some new blood is
needed. With the Gunners in a strong position in the Champions League and right on the tail of
Chelsea and United in the Premier League it is important to strengthen the squad.
That's Richmond Forson, midfielder for Togo's national team, commenting on being attacked on the
way to the Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Angola. Here's the story from Sky Sports, Dossevi
reveals Togo horror, and from Al Jazeera, Togo footballers attacked in Anglola. The Guardian story
is here.
Our amigos alerted us to this horrid incident which took place in
Angola yesterday, the venue of the African Nations Cup. Tongo's
team bus (carrying the likes of Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor, seen above, being
comforted after leaving the hospital) was attacked by gunmen who opened fire and killed the bus
driver.
So Man Citeh have signed one of our hero's from the last 13 years.. Old Paddy, but not the Paddy
of old..
I don't want to tell the Man Citeh fans that he won't be anything like the Paddy we knew and
worshipped, I told a Citeh fan that Ade was a lazy tosser and give him six months he would go back
to his lazy offside ways.
Hull boss Phil Brown wants his two players back home now. "I am appalled.
This throws a question mark against next summer's World Cup.You simply cannot put the safety of
players, officials and fans at the slightest risk. That is totally unacceptable. I have two players
-Daniel Cousin and Seyi Olofinjana - on duty and I want them back home here with us as quickly as
possible,"
Pompey chief executive Peter Storrie said: "This is a terrible, tragic
incident and I am very concerned about this whole situation.
There was really only one football story this weekend - the distressing attack on the Togo team by
rebels in a disputed part of Angola. Nearly 72 hours have passed since the incident rocked African
football. It took far less time for the world's press and the blogosphere to start weighing up the
implications of the attack for the 2010 World Cup.
We'll batter them at Old Trafford.
Manchester City were outplayed pretty much from the first whistle to the final whistle on their
home turf, and only collected the win because they were awarded a penalty for a foul outside the
box.
It wasn't our best performance over the 90 minutes but we still managed to control the game.
It was a special night. On a personal level, this first leg League Cup victory over the old enemy
was one of the most memorable City matches I have witnessed. Build up to a
spectacle
The drama of last season's UEFA Cup quarterfinal against Hamburg was a hard
act to follow, but this match surpassed that in every way.
