Our series on the US at the World Cup continues with the second part of our look at the 1998
World Cup. You can read more about US World Cup appearances in 1930 (part 1), 1930 (part
2), 1934, 1950, the 1950-1990 drought, 1990, 1994, 1998 (part 1) and 1998 (part 2)
Putting 1998 in the past
The US had been humiliated at the 1998 World Cup, its poor performance on the field—one goal
scored in three losses— mirrored by acrimony and dissent off the field.
Carlos Tevez and Gary Neville, the two central figures in the acrimony that has surrounded this
season's Manchester derbies, will be under police orders not to do anything that could incite crowd
trouble when City and United renew hostilities tomorrow.
Liverpool have confirmed, via their official website (which has now crashed), that free-agent
Joe Cole has signed for the club on a four-year deal following his release from
Chelsea.
The England winger's move to Anfield is now only subject to a routine medical that will be
undertaken either later today or first thing tomorrow morning.

Despite turning the French national team into a quivering globule of merde during his
six years in charge, Raymond Domenech is seeking £2.5 million in compensation
from the French Football Federation (FFF) after he was sacked following Les Bleus

So Mesut Ozil won a Bambi Award. We were laboring under the misapprehension that a Bambi was an
appearance based honour awarded to those who look most like the Disney deer, a notion not dispelled
by the above photo.
Nearly four years after powering in a header to give a 10 man Arsenal a 1-0 advantage that took
them within minutes of a Champions League win over Barcelona, Big Sol Campbell was back in an
Arsenal shirt today playing for the reserves in what clearly is the Rayden meets Gorro, last round
in the tournament level test for him.
After a brief but ultimately fruitless dalliance with Ajax manager Martin Jol,
it would now appear that Fulham are within hours of appointing Mark Hughes as
their new manager, with many reports suggesting that he could be unveiled at Craven Cottage as
early as this afternoon.

There was anger, acrimony, a brawl, some lovely football, the announcement of a potentially
truly top class player and Pele. There was also heartbreak, tears, good goals and goodbyes.

By the time our players get to Bob Bradley -- or Guus Hiddink or Jurgen Klinsmann or anyone
else, for that matter -- there's really only so much they can do.
Manchester United are ready to test Liverpool's determination to retain Fernando Torres in January
after being encouraged that the Spanish forward could be prised away from Anfield.
Real Madrid forwards Karim Benzema and Kaká are also on the Old Trafford club's radar with the
club's owners, the Glazer family, acutely aware of the necessity to replace Wayne Rooney with
another stellar name should the England forward leave.
When Ashley Cole disappeared in a cloud of acrimony to Chelsea, there was a smug feeling among many
Arsenal supporters that they had still got the best of the deal.
Not only did the club receive £5 million and an excellent defender in William Gallas but there
was also the consolation of believing they already had a ready-made replacement in Gael Clichy.
With Manchester City currently 'wallowing' down in fourth place after only 13 Premier League
games, the fact that manager Roberto Mancini has been having to justify his
position for the past weeks is fairly ludicrous yet equally indicative of the anabolic swell that
the club's pretensions have undergone during the past couple of years.

The US women's national soccer team faces off against Italy today in Chicago It's their second
match with Italy ... and total goals will determine who goes to Germany to play in the women's
World Cup.
A win or a draw will send the US to Germany. A one-point win by Italy would send both teams into
a tiebreaker scenario, while a win by more than one point would send Italy to the women's World
Cup.
The bizarre saga of Rafa Benitez and Inter Milan is soccer's most compelling current soap opera,
and the most outrageous plot twist of all could be yet to come.
Benitez was fired by Inter on Wednesday after a series of disputes came to a head last weekend,
when he criticized owner Massimo Moratti in a public rant.
