Not so long a go, Ellis Short offered Steve Bruce a four year contract to help quieten the murmurings in the media of Bruce's strong contention for the England management job. This was despite the fact that Bruce had seemingly only had modest achievements in his twelve year managerial career, with the only tangible success's being two promotions from the championship with Birmingham City (sandwiched between relegation).

It was only a tiny step forward, but those that have been campaigning for the return of terraces in the form of safe standing had a rare reason to be cheerful yesterday with an announcement from north of the border, that the Scottish Premier League is to trial a pilot that may see the return of standing at matches in the near future.

Yesterday I was rummaging around in Tooting's Oxfam and found a Charles Buchan book from 1955-56. In it was this picture of young Graham Leggat. How about that?

Leggat had just played a key role in Aberdeen's first ever league title (in the 1954-55 season). A few years later he was scoring a super-fast hat-trick on Boxing Day as Fulham destroyed Ipswish 10-1.
