Scottish Premier League Match Predictions 11 February 2012 - The 90th Minute Soccer Blog
A week away from the blog.
I'd like to explain my absence with exciting tales of derring do. But I can't. The most excitement
I got was watching Hibs beat Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup, nailbiting to the end.
No, I've been away largely because I couldn't be arsed for the last week.
Rangers mainstay Maurice Edu has just buried his first goal since September, a drive from the edge
of the area to pull the hosts level with rivals Aberdeen on 70 minutes. So that makes two posts with
clips to come...- Greg Seltzer
Another week spent dodging ever more dire warnings about the state of Scottish football.
This time everything's got a lot Grimmer with Aberdeen losing a lauded protégé to the mysterious
land of riches that some people call England.
Highly rated youngster leaves Aberdeen area to chance his arm in England?
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has been given the FIFA presidential award for
services to football. The United manager was presented with the award by FIFA president Sepp
Blatter at the FIFA Ballon d'Or gala in Zurich.
Talking about SAF, Blatter said:
"Elite football is all about results and winning and there is no one better at it than him.
A January weekend to cast off the shackles of league pressure and revel in the romance of what is,
at this stage, the most egalitarian of our competitions.
A Scottish Cup weekend. Breathe in the fresh air of potential shocks and brace yourself butchers,
bakers and candlestick makers making SPL defences look like part-time amateurs.

That's it, keep it on the ground son, you're rubbish in the air
Scottish football is often criticised for its lack of technical quality and while this view is
often unfair, Aberdeen's Robert Milsom did little to silence the critics on Monday in the Dons' 2-1
win against Dundee United.
Sir Alex Ferguson at 70: Aberdeen achievements should be remembered
The plaudits will once again be ringing in Sir Alex Ferguson's ears this weekend as the
Manchester United manager turns 70. His achievements with Aberdeen should still be remembered.

Yesterday I was rummaging around in Tooting's Oxfam and found a Charles Buchan book from
1955-56. In it was this picture of young Graham Leggat. How about that?
Leggat had just played a key role in Aberdeen's first ever league title (in the 1954-55
season). A few years later he was scoring a super-fast hat-trick on Boxing Day as Fulham
destroyed Ipswish 10-1.

It was only a tiny step forward, but those that have been campaigning for the return of terraces
in the form of safe standing had a rare reason to be cheerful yesterday with an announcement from
north of the border, that the Scottish Premier League is to trial a pilot that may see the return
of standing at matches in the near future.
In the run up to Christmas the Scottish Football Blog is taking a daily look at the season so
far for the 12 SPL clubs.
And what they might hope to find in their stockings.
Alphabetically at least Aberdeen are number one.
Woe seems to hang over Pittodrie like a particularly clingy North Sea haar at the moment.
Not so long a go, Ellis Short offered Steve Bruce a four year contract to help quieten the
murmurings in the media of Bruce's strong contention for the England management job. This was
despite the fact that Bruce had seemingly only had modest achievements in his twelve year
managerial career, with the only tangible success's being two promotions from the championship with
Birmingham City (sandwiched between relegation).
Personal transfer fee Sone Aluko has revealed that he, his friends and family had to stump up
£200,000 to complete his move to Rangers. The 22-year-old's transfer was on the verge of collapse
when the champions refused to stump up the compensation being demanded by his former club Aberdeen.

Monday night football.
When I was a slip of lad approaching drinking age Monday night football used to be a thing of
wonder.
(Drinking age, kids, used to be more of a general guide than a rule. Don't live as I lived. It's
bad for you.)
We'd gather around what we then thought were big screens and be stunned as Newcastle and Liverpool
served up seven goal thrillers and Sky's hype levels left our skies and bothered Martian moons.
Follow the words with your finger, Darren There is a lot of high and mighty guff diatribed from
disillusioned fans about how stupid football players are, and how detached they are from fans in
our modern game. Credit therefore has to be given to Aberdeen's Darren Mackie for agreeing to be
interviewed by a local [.

It is all too easy to get snobby and sneer at footballers about their (usual) lack of a
high-level education. And too often that sneeriness is borne out of nothing but jealousy at the
fact they get paid shed-loads of money for simply playing football. Still, in the case of poor old
Darren Mackie of Aberdeen, it's hard not to giggle.
I was recently asked to write a couple of paragraphs about what Sir Alex Ferguson meant to me.
How on earth do you put in to words what a difference this man has made to us? My life is
considerably better and I have been unquestionably happier than I would have otherwise been because
Ferguson became the manager of Manchester United in 1986.
Self-confidence, it would seem, is something Alex Ferguson has never lacked. Full of ambition,
the Scot declared in his first programme notes as Manchester United manager: "I am not really
interested in what has happened here in the past. I don't mean any disrespect to the great
achievements of Manchester United over the years.

Did not dress in 2-1 win over Aberdeen.
There exists evidence to the contrary that a man's home is his castle. To begin, seeing as how
there are so few men living in castles these days, owing to their relatively poor resale value and
faulty electrical wiring incapable of handling the wattage necessary to capture the beautiful
game in breathtaking HD, castles just aren't prime real estate these days.
David Stockdale started and made 11 saves in Ipswich Town's 2-2 draw at
Cardiff on Saturday. On October 1 he started and made 7 saves in Ipswich's 3-1 win over
Brighton.
Bjorn Helge Riise did not dress in Portmouth's 2-0 win over Barnsley on
Saturday. He started and played 45 minutes in Portsmouth's 1-0 loss at Leeds on October 1.
A tortuous night following Hibs' league cup win against Motherwell from afar.
They got there in the end, the dramatic cruelty of the penalty shoot-out and all that.
The "real" Hibs, said a relieved Colin Calderwood. But they were minutes away from another
defeat.
Cometh the approaching final whistle, cometh the man.
Time for a quick mention of my new friends at Tweetsport.
Regular readers will know I'm something of a Twitter addict. And with Twitter now just about the
best place to get sports news, Tweetsport is the ideal site for all your sports news in one place.
And you don't even need to be on Twitter to follow the action.
Billy Brown is the new assistant manager at Hibs.
It's going to feel odd typing that for some time to come. Rumours had been swirling all week but it
still came as a bit of a shock when the announcement was made.
That shouldn't really be the reaction.
Everything you've heard about Hibs v Aberdeen last Sunday is probably an understatement.
What times to be a Hibs supporter.
Bottom of the league, a manager who has become a toxic brand, sections of the support ever more
alienated from the vision the board have for the club. And sections of the support who are
consistently voting with their feet.
A demonstration is planned before today's game with second bottom Aberdeen.
Some more involved coverage of both the Huskies men's and women's soccer teams is on the to-do
list here at the Heart, but in the meantime I thought it was worth highlighting the fact that the
men's team has entered the NSCAA national rankings at #23 after starting the season 2-0-1. The last
time the Huskies were ranked was a brief period in October last season when the Huskies were also
ranked #23rd after a big win over Portland.
When one thinks about Scottish Football, one thinks Celtic Glasgow or Rangers. These two Clubs
dominate & always win (with the odd exception) the Scottish Premier League. Its the typical "two
horse" race that limits the chances & opportunities of the other Clubs present & active like
Aberdeen, Dundee Utd, Hibernian, Motherwell .
There is a reality-bending report that claims Aberdeen are set to open talks for U.S. striker Eddie
Johnson. Yes, the club have paid some attention to the free agent, but a club source told me that
1) they just bought the striker they were looking for & 2) they are out of budget unless someone
leaves.
All three Americans played a part of Rangers win at home over Aberdeen with Mauriice Edu and Carlos
Bocanegra starting while Alejandro Bedoya came off the bench
Alejandro Bedoya finally gets the green light to suit up for Rangers but may not start alongside
Carlos Bocanegra and Maurice Edu as Rangers take on Aberdeen.
Things are never as bad as they seem. In 1882 The Sporting Times declared English cricket
dead.
Right now England are the number one team in the world, holders of The Ashes that once symbolised
their demise.
Sport has peaks and sport has troughs.
But this was a grim night for Scottish football.
The phrase "European competition" had a somewhat redundant feel to it this evening, after
Tottenham Hotpur cruised to a comfortable win against Heart of Midlothian at Tynecastle in a match
that felt at times like a training match for the visitors from the Premier League. It was a match
that might, under a certain light, have had the feel of a possible surprise on the cards.
All the talk has finally finished and while the conjecture over who may or may not be joining
Spurs will go on for another couple of weeks, our season finally gets under way at Tynecastle
tonight.
While Spurs may be favourites to win over two legs, former Hearts boss and current Spurs coach Joe
Jordan says the team will not underestimate their Scottish opponents.
Not technically the Fringe this one. Rather the Edinburgh International Book Festival in the
capital's posh Charlotte Square.
The stars: Stuart Donald, author of
On Fire with Fergie, and Daniel Gray, writer of
Stramash: Tackling Scotland's Towns and Teams.
The format will be familiar with anyone who has visited the annual orgy of literature before.
Do our footballers ever ruminate on how a modern Scotland can persuade the rest of the world that
it is embracing innovation and shifting away from our old "tartan and shortbread" image?
Probably not.
But at least one star of yesteryear is probably immensely relaxed about the nostalgic power of
plaid and a unleavened biscuit phenomenon.
