The U.S. U-17 Women's National Team ended the CONCACAF U-17 Women's Championships with a 6-0
victory over Costa Rica, a 38-0 goal difference and, amazingly, without a World Cup berth. Still,
there are a lot of positives for the young U.S. players to take with them from this tournament and
some lessons that will be with them for their entire careers.
The United States Women opened Algarve play with a big win over Iceland made possible by a strong
performance from goalkeeper Hope Solo. She saved two penalties in the 2-0 win. An Iceland own-goal
opened the scoring in the 60th-minute, with Lauren Cheney making it 2-0 a minute later. "It's
really funny, because Abby and I sat at breakfast for about an hour this morning talking about
penalty kick strategy and what I like and.
You never really hear of the University of Evansville when it comes to world or even national
news in the sport of soccer. In fact I have never heard of the University of Evansville at all
for that matter.
But recently the school's women's soccer team made the sporting news in a rather strange and
unfortunate way.
One moment you're hot.
The next moment you're not.
After scoring seven goals at home in two games while only conceding one, the Philadelphia
Independence lost to the last-place Washington Freedom on Wednesday night 2–0. The Independence
have only two road wins on the season with three losses and two draws.

Wow—Props for a Philly player from a New York Paper! Apparently Union fans aren't the only
ones to be surprised Le Toux didn't make the MVP short list. The New York Times Soccer Blog's
report on the announcement of the end-of-the-year award nominees is essentially one long diatribe
against the injustice of Le Toux not making the cut: "All Le Toux did was score 14 goals and dish
out 11 assists, meaning that he had a foot in 25 of the Union's 31 goals.
With goals from four different players, the US defeated Costa Rica on Monday to win first place
in Group B of the CONCACAF qualifiers for the 2011 Women's World Cup. The US will face the second
place team of Group A on Friday, November 5.
Of the three Philadelphia Independence players on the roster, defender Heather Mitts and forward
Amy Rodriguez—who scored a hat trick in Saturday's 9–0 demolition of Guatemala—were given the
day off.

Midfielder Sinead Farrelly tallied four goals and six assists during ACC play for the
University of Virginia. (Dec. 23, 2010) -- While only a small number of college seniors – 24
to be exact – will be drafted into Women's Professional Soccer on January 14, many may have to
claw their way onto the rosters of the six WPS teams once pre-season arrives.
There hasn't be a lot of time to do much else than train, play, recover, eat and sleep for the U.S.
players at the CONCACAF U-17 Women's Championship, but today the team's game day post-breakfast
walk included a visit to the souvenir store. While a vast array of nick-knacks were purchased,
including several hammocks, assorted bracelets and jewelry, it was the t-shirts and hairbands that
seemed to be the big winners.

I really need to find more time to read the blog posts over at US Youth Soccer. There can be
some really good stuff over there, but also stuff that makes you scratch your head. Like this
recent post from Susan Boyd about free skills camps:
Lately I've been seeing a number of clubs advertising spring skill camps for U-9 and U-10
players.

The Colorado School of Mines women's soccer team took command of the Rocky Mountain Athletic
Conference race for the top with a 5-2 victory over Colorado Christian University on Wednesday.
Jessica Stark started the scoring for Mines with a goal in the 24th minute off a corner kick.
Megan Woodworth tallied the assist.
Abby Wambach seriously shanked a shot in warm ups and drilled a poor guy and his hot dog. Pretty
funny.

During training today the U.S. team was doing a fun warm-up in which they had to chest-bump another
player (also high-fives and some other fun stuff) between volleys out of the air. As you can see,
either Heather Mitts picked the wrong player or the enthusiasm for the drill just got a little out
of control.
During a practice in Italy, Heather Mitts (5'5") chest bumps Abby Wambach (5'10″) and
survives. This team knows how to have fun.
The United States Women's National Team secured a spot in the 2011 Women's World Cup with a 1-0 win
(2-0 on aggregate) over Italy. After failing to earn a place in the final 16 for the tournament in
the 2010 Gold Cup, the USWNT defeated the Italians in a home-and-away series.

... it's DAMN cold here in NH!
Now that I've got that off my chest, gotta let you know that WPS has finalized its 2011 schedule
... reducing the number of matches to 18 and taking a break in deference to the Women's World Cup.
(The World Cup runs from June 26-July 17 ... so you might want to pop that into your calendars
now!
