Central Coast Mariners 0, Newcastle Jets 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNYLWew_juA So Mark Bridge's glittering goal has made
the Newcastle Jets Australia's A-League champions. A phenomenal goal, and in my opinion the Jets
had the edge on the Mariners throughout the game. But that last corner will hurt Mariners fans for
a long time.
Some people are talking about tonight's clash with the Wellington Phoenix as a critical one for the
Melbourne Victory's finals aspirations. Sure. It's critical. If the Central Coast Mariners do us a
favour and beat the Newcastle Jets (preferably by a big margin), everything could come down to the
last round - which would make for [.
The Melbourne Victory will have its first home game of the season tonight when it hosts the
Newcastle Jets at Telstra Dome at 8pm. Last year's Grand Finalists are lucky to have two points to
their name this season, having scored a late equaliser in both their matches so far. Melbourne's
form, meanwhile, has been much [.

So regular season of Version 3 of the Hyundai A-League has come to a close. The Central Coast
Mariners were lucky enough to book themselves a spot in the Asian Champions League as well as a
double shot in the finals, thanks to Sydney's draw with Melbourne and the Queensland Roar's loss in
Adelaide. Exciting times [.
After a couple games at home, Melbourne heads to Gosford this weekend for an away game against the
Central Coast Mariners. While the news this week has been focused on Ney Fabiano's 9-match ban,
there is good news too. Jose Luis Lopez returns to the squad, as does Michael Thwaite, who has
recovered from his injury.
It was exactly the game the Melbourne Victory needed. A solid win with plenty of goals to keep the
club at the top of A-League after seven rounds. Perth Glory were truly lacklustre, all across the
pitch. Mitch Langerak was tested just once - and produced a wonderful acrobatic save to keep a
clean sheet - [.
Matthew Trott must be the unluckiest goalkeeper in the country. When Danny Vukovic was sent off
against Sydney FC, Trott came on to defend the Mariners 2 - 0 lead. By the end of the game, he'd
let through five. And then it happened again. Four Melbourne Victory goals in the first half and a
fifth in [.
Neither the North Queensland Thunder nor the Gold Coast Galaxy will join the A-League in 2008/09.
The A-League will remain an 8-team competition for another season. While the Galaxy's bid to join
looked promising, North Queensland's efforts at securing a place next season started to crack last
week. The Thunder lost the financial backing of Millissa [.
I've been away for the past two weeks, on a relaxing holiday up the Great Ocean Road. I tell you
what, trying to get the pub in Lorne to play the Melbourne - Osaka match was an ordeal.
"Socca? Are you serious? That's not a real sport." Yahda yahda yahda. In the end, I
managed to catch [...]
Sydney FC's Chris Bolton stopped shots from Ney Fabiano, Danny Allsopp and Jose Luis Lopez to give
Sydney a 0-0 scoreline against the Melbourne Victory. Melbourne were favourites to win the clash,
with Sydney missing a host of players including John Aloisi and Alex Brosque. Young Chris Payne
made his debút as a lone striker, but [.

The Newcastle Jets' 2-1 win over the Central Coast Mariners may have put an end to the Melbourne
Victory's slim hope of reaching the finals, but that's not to say that the Victory have nothing to
play for in Sunday's match against Sydney FC. Honour is a powerful motivation - especially when it
comes to the [.
The Newcastle Jets are pissed. They've finished the A-League season in excellent fashion, landing a
spot in the top two - and guaranteeing a double shot at reaching the Grand Final. But they won't
get the Grand Final at home, whether they win against the Central Coast Mariners or not. The FFA
has decided that neither Central [.
After ten days of voting, the A-League Awards wrapped up yesterday afternoon. Thank you to everyone
who voted. And a big thank you to the other bloggers who helped nominate players for each category.
Without further ado, here are the winners:
I have to admit, I have seen little of Australia's A-League, but with the Pan Pacific Championships
coming up next week, I've started to pay more attention to the land of the Socceroos (easily my
favorite national team nickname, though I'm still pushing the Snakes for the US MNT to apparently
deaf ears so far.
Besides bringing out the draw for next season, the FFA also announced a number of changes to how
the competition will run. Among them is a change regarding injury replacement players: "Will
be considered on a case by case basis due to ability of NYL (National Youth League) players to be
promoted on a weekly basis.
This is bad. Really, really bad. A post on the Melbourne Victory forum over the weekend explained
the FFA's plans for seating arrangements during Season 4. It's not pretty: With all the debate over
Home End Membership and posts that have appeared on Ultras Tifo, the Sydney FC forum and on this
forum, I.
Melbourne Victory host the Queensland Roar on Sunday, as they try to maintain their hold on the top
spot. The Victory will be buoyed after their come-from-behind draw in Gosford last week, but they
will have to meet Queensland without Michael Theoklitos and Ney Fabiano, who are both on
suspension. Lou Acevski comes into the squad as [.
It was shaping up to be a rather woeful performance by the Melbourne Victory, until Carlos
Hernandez picked up a second yellow in the 57th minute. Down to ten men for the third week in the
row, and the Victory suddenly kicks it up half a dozen notches. This time there was no narrow
victory or [...]
Two out-of-form sides meet each other tomorrow night at the Telstra Dome, in what is a key match
for both of them. Both the Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC have won one, lost two and drawn one of
their last four games. And both will be missing key players tomorrow night. Melbourne are without
Archie Thompson [.
I'm here in Wellington looking forward to tomorrow night's clash between the Melbourne Victory and
Wellington Phoenix. I can't wait. Here we have the Victory, with a solid three point lead at the
top of the table, playing the Phoenix, who scored back-to-back wins for the first time in their
history. Granted, they won the second against [.
The Melbourne Victory meets the first placed team for the second week in a row on Saturday night.
Queensland Roar hit the top of the ladder after beating Perth 4 - 1 and watching the Victory wreak
havoc on the Central Coast Mariners. The Roar may be first, but they're far from secure. Goal
difference is [.

The A-League is likely to become a 10-team competition next season, with the Gold Coast Galaxy and
Townsville's Northern Thunder set to join. The new clubs were officially approved by the FFA
yesterday, though they are still required to meet certain financial criteria. It's good to see the
FFA acting progressively to spread the A-League throughout [.
Eamonn from Football in the Capital yesterday posted an interview with Clive MacKillop, an A-League
referees' assessor. Clive talks about the Grand Final, A-League refereeing standards and pay rates,
and his own journey as a ref. What interested me most was Clive's thoughts on the level of
refereeing in Australia: "We should be employing Refs on the [.
The FFA has released the draw of the 2008-2009 A-League season, which can be downloaded here. This
time around, the FFA has recognised FIFA dates, although Mike Salter rightly points out that it
comes somewhat belated, with the Olyroos' qualification series behind them. The Melbourne Victory
kicks off with two away games, first against Sydney FC and [.
Ney Fabiano, Chonburi FC's Brazilian striker, is playing his last game for the the Thai champions
tonight. According to the Bangkok Post, Fabiano is moving to Australia. It was Stephane Baga that
made the biggest impression when Melbourne Victory played Chonburi in March, but Fabiano set
Chonburi on their way with his first half goal.
Nick Ward and Archie Thompson will both miss another round, while Michael Theoklitos has also
picked up an injury and won't make an appearance against the Wellington Phoenix. The big story this
week, though, is the return of Grant Brebner. Brebner hasn't played since December 2007 and looks
ready to make his reappearance after a long time [.
The Melbourne Victory managed to put 4 past the Wellington Phoenix yesterday afternoon, giving it
the top position in the ladder after two rounds. It wasn't the prettiest football match ever, with
heavy rain soaking the pitch and players. But for Melbourne fans, there was plenty to enjoy. Danny
Allsopp had a fine match, netting Melbourne's first [.
Wow. Well that settles that. Three strikers on at a time is a good idea. A very good idea. The
match started lively enough, with both sides looking evenly matched. An injury to Michael Thwaite
forced Ernie Merrick to make an early substitution. With no defenders to pick from, Merrick chose
the most daring option: Archie [.
The Melbourne Victory will have to do without Michael Thwaite and Jose Luis Lopez tonight when it
hosts Adelaide United at the Telstra Dome. Despite Melbourne's strong run of form so far this
season, this promises to be the sternest test of the Victory's strength. Adelaide are on equal
points with Melbourne, separated only by goal [.
Adelaide United were unable to capitalise on being a man up for over an hour last night, eventually
losing to the Melbourne Victory 1-0. It was a solid, tenacious performance by Melbourne, who
deserved the win. Ney Fabiano picked up a straight red card for spitting at Robert Cornthwaite, a
suspension that could well be lengthened by [.
Check out Pippinu's article Is the A-League a credible competition? I don't necessarily agree with
his argument that the FFA has an anti-Melbourne agenda which has affected referee decisions, but I
certainly think that the inconsistency of referee decisions (and review panel decisions) undermines
the A-League's credibility.
The Melbourne Victory have their backs up against the wall as they prepare to play current
front-runner Adelaide United in Hindmarsh Stadium tomorrow night. The last time these two met,
Melbourne went to 10 men but still managed to come away with a win. In the five matches after that,
however, the Victory's fortunes have dropped.
Melbourne played what was arguably its best game of the season last night, fighting back from a
goal behind to beat Adelaide United 3-2 and reclaim first place. After a series of bad results and
without Archie Thompson, Ney Fabiano and Carlos Hernández, the Victory were undoubtedly the
underdogs last night.
The second-third of the A-League season wraps this weekend, with Melbourne meeting last-placed
Perth Glory. It's another away game for the Victory, who have only had one at home in the last four
matches. But Melbourne will have a week's rest after this, thanks to Adelaide United's Club World
Cup schedule.
It seems the A-League has caught the attention of Parliamentarians. Found this via the MVFC forum
last week. Enjoy:) Sharon Grierson MP Federal Member for Newcastle 19 February 2008 PARLIAMENTARY
ADJOURNMENT SPEECH NEWCASTLE JETS & ENERGYAUSTRALIA STADIUM Ms GRIERSON (Newcastle) (7.35 p.m.) -
Mr Speaker, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your elevation to the
speakership.
The FFA is considering the implementation of an FA Cup style domestic competition. Ben Buckley and
FFA board member Phil Wolanski met with a group of former Socceroos to discuss a range of issues,
including the possibility of bringing in a knock-out competition. The competition would pit teams
from the state leagues against A-League teams.
