Football Federation Australia (FFA) Chairman, Frank Lowy AC, today met with the young men who will
carry the hopes of Australian football for the next decade.
Well some of them! These things change. Danai Gapare from Canberra was there. Well done Danai. But
I'm sure Chris Bush and one or two others will be pushing hard.
Concacaf President and Fifa Vice-President Jack Warner hopes to convince the USA to abandon their
bid for the 2018 finals in order to clear the way for England.
"My message to the USA - and they don't have to listen - is to try to make a deal for 2022 and
I'm quite sure that would have universal support.
The US Soccer Federation will decide by June 1 if they are going to make a bid on the 2018 World
Cup. The Federation is currently exploring the requirements of such a bid.
If the US went forward with this bid, their biggest rival would obviously be England who has a
number of major names backing them (Beckham, Blatter, Pele, Beckenbauer).
The English FA is fighting hard to win the 2018 World Cup and they are willing to put their team
into the mix to make it happen. Last week news surfaced that they are trying to organize a friendly
in Trinidad & Tobago to celebrate the centenary of the local federation.
Why is this of interest?
Australia hopes their bid for the 2009 & 2010 Club World Cup will help them land the 2018 World
Cup.
Their football association's chief executive Ben Buckley said:
"We want to be a strong and positive contributor to the world of football in as
many ways as possible," he added.
The United States announced this week that it's interested in hosting the 2018 World Cup. No
surprise there. They've been talking about bidding for the 2018 World Cup for quite some time
although an official campaign launch isn't expected until later this summer. However, the British
media treated the news as a revelation and a [.
Although England is the front-runner for 2018 World Cup hosting duties, there are still a number of
other countries in the mix. Perhaps the nation with the best outside shot of taking the finals is
Australia, but first they will need to convince their rugby leagues to take a five week break.
For those that don't know, rugby is the king of sports in Australia and the owners (or at least
main tenants) of just about every large stadium in the country.
I spent years telling everyone I knew that Mark Viduka and Harry Kewell were good enough to get
this country to a World Cup.
With other players in Serie A, EPL, SPL and Eredivision it wasn't hard to see the potential.
After all even good old Ireland had made it with many lesser known stars and no-one with the
individual talent of Kewell or Viduka.
Looks like Barack Obama's election to the United States Presidency will do wonders for US soccer as
well.
According to an article in the Guardian Unlimited, Obama's election could derail England's bid to
host the 2018 World Cup, according to a "high-placed" FIFA official. The unnamed source
told Yahoo Sports that Obama's popularity will be "a huge factor" in deciding whether the
USA is selected to host either the 2018 or 2022 tournaments.
Qatar and China drew 0-0 overnight meaning the Aussies took another huge leap towards the World
Cup....next stage at least.
Table below
Aussies 3 7 points
Qatar 3 4 points
China 3 2 points
Iraq 2 1 point
With China and Iraq way off the pace, a draw against Iraq on Sunday morning Aussie tme and a Qatar
victory over China and we're almost certain, definitely, maybe, probably to go through.
