The KYW Philly Socccer Show talks this week with Steven Goff, writer of the Soccer Insider blog
at the Washington Post.
KYW's Greg Orlandini and Philly Soccer Page writer Eli Pearlman-Storch talk with the Post's
soccer writer about DC United, as the Philadelphia Union prepare to head to Washington to face off
against their Eastern Conference rivals.
On Saturday, I was all ready to go. The Rose Bowl, site of the Gold Cup final, would host
90,000-plus fans and I'd be there to give as much of a full account as possible. With A.C. blogging
away even before we got to the stadium, I was also set on providing my own inside info, complete
with pictures and descriptions.

Entering the Gold Cup, the United States wasn't the team to beat. That moniker fell on Mexico,
whether they embraced it or not. Following Mexico's 4-2 victory over the U.S. in Saturday's final,
not only is Mexico clearly the team to beat in CONCACAF, but the United States should be very
concerned about the near future
That the U.

By Clemente Lisi – PASADENA, CA (Jun 26, 2011) US Soccer Players -- History has an awful way of
repeating itself. With the USA up 2-0 in the Gold Cup final Saturday afternoon against Mexico at
the Rose Bowl, it looked as if the Americans were on their way to the title. It was not meant to
be. Like the 2009 Confederations Cup final against Brazil, the USA squandered a 2-0 lead.
I was trying to figure out why Tim Howard sincerely believed that the Gold Cup post-game ceremony
had been conducted entirely in Spanish, and why so many English-speaking reporters didn't remember
that the master of ceremonies of the trophy presentation, Fernando Fiore, had in fact spoken both
Spanish and English throughout.
After spotting him in the pressbox, I was curious about what LA Times writer Bill Plaschke would
write about - given that he hasn't shown much interest or knowledge about soccer in the past.
Here's his take.
Kevin Baxter wrote on the match itself, but his piece didn't contain his joke about Chuck Blazer's
resemblance to Fat Bastard from the Austin Powers films.

I was writing for Sports Illustrated's website today - a piece focused on Mexico. Check it out and
let me know your thoughts on El Tri's performance.

Mexico successfully defended their Gold Cup title, winning the 2011 edition of the tournament on
Saturday in Pasadena. As CONCACAF champions, they advance to the Confederations Cup to be held in
Brazil in 2013. In front of a packed Rose Bowl, the United States got a quick start. Michael
Bradley scored in the 8th minute from a Freddy Adu corner.
3:10 p.m. Well, ok, we're not actually at the Rose Bowl yet. Luis and I decided to be environmental
and carpool to the game and at this moment, we're stuck in the traffic leading to the stadium
parking lots. People are walking past us at a steady clip, going faster than the molasses pace of
the crowded cars.

By Clemente Lisi – PASADENA, CA (Jun 24, 2011) US Soccer Players – There is no real way not to
overhype Saturday's Gold Cup final at the Rose Bowl. Whenever the USA and Mexico meet – be it the
Gold Cup, a World Cup Qualifier or friendly – it is always a chance for these CONCACAF
heavyweights to add another page to the story of their long-simmering rivalry.
Whether it's from Freddy Adu or Clint Dempsey, all I want is a trophy. (Getty Images)
Let's be real honest, the last month or so for the US Men's National Team hasn't been real
pretty now has it? Wins over Canada, Guadeloupe, Jamaica and Panama are what the US can hang their
hats on at the moment.
By Cesar Diaz – NEW YORK, NY (Jun 23, 2011) US Soccer Players -- For the third consecutive Gold
Cup final, bitter border rivals and the class of CONCACAF will meet in the Confederation final.
This time it's the Rose Bowl in Pasadena hosting the United States and Mexico. At stake? Regional
pride and a shot at the 2013 Confederations Cup in Brazil.

The crowd at Relient Stadium in Houston as well as the crowd watching around the world at home
all let out a collective gasp when Bob Bradley decided to make a change midway through a scoreless
semifinal. Screams of "WTF", "OMG" and of course the "#FireBradley" came down as Freddy Adu entered
the match.
This is for the spot in the Gold Cup final - the USA is there courtesty of their 1-0 victory over
Panama earlier today.
3 - Already Chicharito has threatened the Hondo goal. Not wasting any time, that one.
4 - Guardado is a beast, and his outside shot just now doesn't miss by much.

Something happened in the 78th minute of Wednesday night's Gold Cup semifinal that most USA soccer
fans thought would be common by this point in the team's development. Freddy Adu found Landon
Donovan with a long pass, Donovan put a ball in front of the net, and Clint Dempsey finished it off
for the 1-0 win over Panama.
Jozy Altidore's left hamstring injury will take four-to-six weeks to heal, the US Soccer Federation
announced on Wednesday. As a result, Altidore will miss the rest of the Gold Cup. Altidore started
as a single forward on Sunday at RFK Stadium against Jamaica, but he had to be subbed off after 12
minutes.
The Rose Bowl will be site of this year's Gold Cup final. If all goes as planned, Mexico and the
United States will once again do battle for the right to claim the regional crown.
If all goes to hell, then, CONCACAF stands to lose quite a bit of money.
A Gold Cup final featuring Mexico would draw at least 80,000 fans to the Rose Bowl.

By Clemente Lisi – WASHINGTON, DC (Jun 21, 2011) US Soccer Players – The USA's collision course
with Mexico remains very much alive at this Gold Cup. That seemingly inevitable final match-up
between CONCACAF's two best teams is the likeliest outcome from Wednesday's semifinal doubleheader
at what's expected to be a full Reliant Stadium in Houston.
Late Sunday, CONCACAF announced that the Gold Cup organizing committee will allow Mexico to call in
five players to replace those suspended for testing positive for a banned substance. The following
is the official press statement. NEW YORK (Sunday, June 19, 2011) – The CONCACAF Gold Cup
Organizing Committee today evaluated the petition from the Federacion Mexicana de Futbol to replace
five players on its 23-man competition roster who had been separated from the National.

Saturday night's Gold Cup quarterfinals ended with a tiebreaker in game one to put Honduras through
to the semifinals where they will face Mexico on Wednesday in Houston. After dominating Group A,
Mexico needed two second-half goals to put Guatemala out of the tournament. In the early game,
Honduras went ahead three minutes into the second-half at the New Meadowlands when Jerry Bengtson
scored.
By Clemente Lisi – WASHINGTON, DC (Jun 17, 2011) US Soccer Players -- It often looks as if the
opening round of the Gold Cup is a formality aimed at setting up a USA-Mexico final. More often
than not, those are the two countries contending for the trophy. This year, Jamaica has something
to say about that.
Union
Ahead of Saturday's game in Vancouver, Kevin Kinkead presents another excellent scouting
report.
In the Goal.com head-to-head preview, the Philly guy sees the Union winning 2-1, the Vancouver
sees the Whitecaps winning 2-1. The sport betting website SBRforum.com predicts a 2–1 win for the
Union.
The Gold Cup knockout rounds are upon us.
Mathcups are:
1. Honduras-Costa Rica
2. Mexico-Guatemala
3. El Salvador-Panama
4. USA-Jamaica
In the semis, we'll get the winners of 1-2 and 3-4, which could mean a Mexico-USA final.
What a shock.

My friend Kimleigh is looking to buy a car, and has decided that she must have something
"zippy".
I asked for exactly what that meant, and she said, "It has to feel energetic, agile, like it's
going to go places with no problem."
That definition for zippy puts a finger on what is missing from the USA squad right now.

Union
Power rankings roundup! At MLSsoccer.com, the Union moves into second place and do the same at
ESPN, SBI, Goal.com.
Sheanon Williams is named to Goal.com's Best XI for Week 13. Danny Califf and Keon Daniel get
honorable mentions.
Danny Mwanga says of playing in Vancouver, "The opening minutes on the road, in a tough place to
play, are so important.
In a game that the United States couldn't lose if they wanted to continue on in the Gold Cup, they
got an early start from their offense on Tuesday night in Kansas City. After Guadeloupe hit the
cross bar, the US responded with a 9th minute goal from Jozy Altidore. That was enough for the 1-0
win and a trip to RFK Stadium to play Jamaica on Sunday.
By Clemente Lisi – NEW YORK, NY (June 13, 2011) US Soccer Players – Mention the name Guadeloupe
in the context of the Gold Cup and the first thing that comes to mind is the word ‘upset.' In its
first-ever Gold Cup appearance in 2007, Guadeloupe reached the semifinals only to lose 1-0 to
Mexico.
Spacing: Oddly enough considering the level of the opponent, the United States reverted to the same
spacing issues they showed against Spain. The gap between the defense and the midfield gave up too
much territory, leading to a disconnect that only benefited Panama. Whether it was a set of tactics
that just weren't working or miscommunication, the links between the defense and the attack were
stretched too far.
The United States got a first-half shock at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa on Saturday night,
falling behind by two goals to Panama. Luis Tejada opened the scoring in the 18th minute and
Gabriel Gomez doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the 35th. The USA came back when Clarence
Goodson headed in a goal from a set piece in the 67th minute.
By Clemente Lisi – NEW YORK, NY (June 10, 2011) US Soccer Players -- After outclassing Canada in
its Gold Cup opener, the United States takes on Panama on Saturday in another delicate Group C
encounter. A win would earn the National Team a berth to the quarterfinals. A loss or draw would
set up a potential do-or-die match against Guadeloupe.
Union
Justin Mapp could be available to face RSL.
Kevin Kinkead has another excellent RSL scouting report on the Union website. In the
head-to-head preview at Goal.com, the Philly guy sees a 2–1 win for the Union, the RSL guy a
1–0 win for the visitors. Philly Union Talk thinks three point are likely while Unholy Union
expects a draw.
