The 2011-12 offseason for Major League Soccer is underway today as the 19th club the Montreal
Impact made their ten selections in the Expansion Draft.
Below are the ten players selected:
- Brian Ching (Houston)
- Zarek Valentin (Chivas)
- Justin Mapp (Philadelphia)
- Bobby Burling (San Jose)
- Jed Brovsky (Vancouver)
- Collen Warner (Real Salt Lake)
- Josh Gardner (Columbus Crew)
- Sanna Nyassi (Colorado Rapids)
- James Riley (Seattle Sounders)
- Seth Sinovic (Sporting Kansas City)
Montreal also made a couple deals during the draft as well.

I've already given a mock draft based on my predictions of each MLS club's protection lists and
now that the real lists are out we can get a better sense of who could be actually taken
tomorrow.
Every team released their protection lists yesterday evening with a few surprises listed
Montreal should come away with a decent start to their expansion campaign.

Not to sound too surprised, but when the Union released their Protected List for Wednesday's
Expansion Draft, I joined in the shouts of delight that reverberated around the greater
Philadelphia area. The Union got this list exactly right. All of the veterans who helped lead this
team are safe.
I am a little late getting these posted but here they are, the complete protection/unprotected
lists for each MLS club for tomorrow's Expansion Draft with the Montreal Impact.

Philly Soccer Page writer Adam Cann recently spoke with Montreal Impact coach Jesse Marsh.
In their conversation, Marsch talked about the many variables to consider when deciding who to
select in the Expansion Draft, as well as the club's vision for the future and his role as a
coach.

University of Delaware upset No. 20 ranked University of Virginia with a 1–0 double overtime
win in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday night. Sophomore John Dineen headed the
winner with 4:14 remaining the the second overtime period.
Just wanted to give you all a heads up. Tonight I will be doing some commentary of a Mock
Expansion Draft over at SBNation.com. The picks should be announced laster this evening, 7-ish I
think on the East Coast....but don't hold me to that. My commentary will follow.
In the latest installment of the Philly Soccer Show Podcast, KYW's Greg Orlandini is joined by
Philly Soccer Page writers Adam Cann and Eli Pearlman-Storch to discuss the Expansion Draft, the
MLS Cup and the recent USMNT friendlies against France and Slovenia.
In part one, the topic is the Expansion Draft.
Brad Evans could be that one Sounder that will be picked by Montreal. (Getty Images)
Over the last few weeks I've gone through each of the 18 Major League Soccer clubs and put out
the list of players I could see them protecting and not protecting. Many of you have emailed,
tweeted, sent messages on Facebook to let me know you've enjoyed these lists and that you want a
mock draft from these lists.
LA has another week or so before they release their protection list. (Getty Images)
This is it the final club in our Expansion Draft protection lists the Los Angeles Galaxy. The
Galaxy won this year's Supporters' Shield trophy for the best record in the league and now are 90
minutes away from winning another MLS Cup.
Houston won the Eastern Conference this year. (Getty Images)
Only two more teams to go in our look at each MLS club's potential expansion draft lists. Today
I start with the Eastern Conference champions, the Houston Dynamo.
The Dynamo shocked a lot of people this season with their late fall surge in the playoffs.
Kei Kamara and Teal Bunbury are a huge part of Sporting KC. (Getty Images)
Starting the year with a 10 game road trip and 11 of their first 12 games on the road
expectations weren't high for Sporting Kansas City. The old Wizards turned into Sporting had a new
look, name and stadium in 2011.
RSL is done for 2011, now Jason Kreis faces the tough task of protecting 11 players. (Getty
Images)
Expectations were high going into 2011 for Real Salt Lake. The club was closing in on a historic
CONCACAF Champions League win and everyone in the league was supporting their efforts. But
injuries, suspensions and the gutting loss in the CCL final to Monterrey changed the course of the
season for RSL.
Union
Danny Califf said of the Union's long-ball tactics against Houston, "It played right into their
hands. They have a couple of big center backs, and all of them, aside from Corey Ashe, are big, and
along with their midfielders they eat that up."
CSN Philly completely sidesteps the issue of Peter Nowak's selection and tactical decisions by
saying that, in losing to Houston, the Union were beaten by a better team.
New York has a lot of talent but little depth, which could be good for them in the expansion
draft. (Getty Images)
It wasn't the year that most had expected out of the New York Red Bulls. A fast started turned
into a long summer drought followed by a late season push into the playoffs. Expectations were high
and the team failed to reach them.
Philadelphia has a strong foundation for 2012, will it get hit by the expansion draft? (Getty
Images)
Entering the 2011 season, I felt the Philadelphia Union were a team that could surprise a few
folks and be a dark horse pick to make the playoffs. Turns out they made the playoffs but couldn't
get any further than the semifinal round after their loss to the Houston Dynamo last night.
Seattle stands to lose an important player in the expansion draft. (Getty Images)
I don't think many folks expected to see this list so soon. With the Seattle Sounders exiting
the playoffs last night after there 3-2 (on aggregate) loss to Real Salt Lake, the list had to be
made. Boy, Montreal has to make the most of this too as the Sounders stand to lose one quality
player.
Losing Conor Casey was a major blow for the Rapids in 2011. (Getty Images)
A little programming note to kick things off today. Sorry for the radio silence yesterday
(except for Geoff's Champion's League previews), I was hardly even able to look at soccer stuff
until late in the evening when the two MLS playoff games were on.
Columbus goes into the offseason with some questions for their expansion draft lists. (Getty
Images)
The Columbus Crew had many questions going into the 2011 season mostly due to the amount of
veteran players that were let go by head coach Robert Warzycha. But as the season went on the Crew
began to find their footing and were actually in contention to win the Eastern Conference.
Fabian Castillo should be a protected player for FC Dallas. (Getty Images)
Another expansion draft list for you on this Friday afternoon.
This one centers around the team I'm most familiar with, FC Dallas. I will keep this one fairly
short as I find FCD to be one of the easier teams to put a list down on paper (or type out in this
case).
Chicago came very close to the post season, now they have to focus on saving the right 11 for
the expansion draft. (Getty Images)
I took a day or so off from writing these lists, but I hope to get to at least two today.
Today, we are focusing on the Chicago Fire. Frank Klopas' team struggled out of the gate due to
injuries and youth but once former manager Carlos de los Cobos was shown the door, the Fire turned
things around in the summer and ended up being a decent team for 2012.
DC United has a very young roster that Ben Olsen will try to save. (Getty Images)
Moving on today in the expansion draft lists, I really wanted to get to this one yesterday but
ran out of time.
DC United just missed out on the playoffs this season. Injuries and poor form down the stretch
really hurt them when it mattered most.
John Spencer could have few decisions to make about his protection list if his owner's words are
true. (Getty Images)
This could easily be one of the easier draft lists that I do. Why? The Timbers owner Merritt
Paulson said recently on Twitter that the Timbers and the Montreal Impact have an agreement in
place for the Impact not to pick anyone from the Timbers roster.
Toronto has the building blocks for a strong 2012, who will they leave unprotected though for
Montreal to pick from? (Getty Images)
Toronto FC had what you could easily call an up and down year. First year manager Aron Winter
came in and cleaned house a bit which caused for plenty of early season losses.
Chivas USA hasn't had too much to celebrate, now comes the dreaded expansion draft. (Getty
Images)
Chivas USA had an up and down 2011. Their season looked promising at times but injuries piled up
and issues with scoring took this team over. First year manager Robin Fraser did a decent job this
year but will have the fun task of going through the roster to figure out who stays and who will be
left available for next month's expansion draft.
Who will be saved and who will be left unprotected for San Jose? (Getty Images)
I am back on the expansion draft list bandwagon this afternoon. I've been working here and there
this week on compiling several club's lists. Currently I am only working on teams that are
eliminated from playoff contention though next week we'll have plenty more as teams fail to advance
in the post season will be up to eight and then up to 12 when the wildcard round ends.
I've been slowly going through the expansion draft protection lists (more coming this week by
the way) here and now we have the rules for the draft.
Major League Soccer will hold the 2012 MLS Expansion Draft via conference call on Wednesday,
November 23, 2011 at 2 p.m. ET. The Montreal Impact, will select 10 players during the 10-round
draft.
New England has some tough decisions to make in regards to the expansion draft. (Getty
Images)
It may be the final week of the season but we are moving on in the 2011 Expansion Draft lists
here. I've already covered the Vancouver Whitecaps and now I will tackle another club that is out
of contention the New England Revolution.
Vancouver didn't have too much to celebrate this season. (Getty Images)
Oh yes, it is that time of the year again when teams are going to have to start paying attention
to who they want to keep and not keep for the 2012 season. Over the next couple of weeks I'll have
every team covered for this year's expansion draft.
