Fitting that, on the final day of a frustrating season, the best thing to happen to Liverpool didn't actually have anything to do with Liverpool. Liverpool were as good late as they were horrible early, and while the influence of Andy Carroll and general urgency saved a little bit of pride, their late improvements serve mostly as a damning indictment of a club that, while content to talk about progress, made many of the same mistakes from top to bottom that we've seen all season.

It was a deserved appearance in the eleven for the young English midfielder, who's found little playing time after being recalled from a successful loan spell at Blackpool.

Liverpool disappoint by dropping more points at Anfield, but with dismal performances in their last two, they managed to create a bit of positive sentiment by showing actual drive and commitment towards getting all three points.

There's apparently a bit of disagreement about whether or not Liverpool performed that poorly yesterday some maintain that they weren't necessarily that bad, and had they not had the potential go-ahead goal waved off by Lee Mason, they'd have pushed on to get the win. I'm still of the opinion that they were an embarrassing calamity for most of the match and gave a poor account of themselves, tired or unlucky or whatever else.

Liverpool fall to their fifth league defeat in six matches, giving them eight points from eleven matches in 2012. Wigan were far and away the better side on the day, taking the match to Liverpool for all but a few brief spells in either half, and walk away from Anfield deserved winners.

Quick turnaround for Liverpool after their Sunday victory as they head to Loftus Road to face Queens Park Rangers tomorrow night. After a difficult start to 2012, Liverpool finally look as though they're turning a corner with a convincing win over Everton in the Merseyside Derby and a grinding victory over Stoke on Sunday to advance to the semi-finals of the FA Cup.

For the second match in a row, we got a performance from Luis Suarez that was, on the whole, thoroughly enjoyable. His display in the derby win over Everton was undoubtedly boosted by the return of Steven Gerrard, but the creativity and work rate of the Uruguayan was integral in two of the captain's three goals.

Stewart Downing's second half strike sends Liverpool back to Anfield South for next month's FA Cup semi-final, with the hosts narrowly getting past Stoke. First half goals from Luis Suarez and Peter Crouch left the match level at the break, but a positive response after the restart proved enough to give Liverpool the victory.

While Liverpool's form in domestic cup competition has been sparkling the League Cup's already been secured and they've scored 13 goals in their three FA Cup wins Stoke hasn't hasn't been much worse, and given the narrow finishes in their three previous fixtures this season, there's no reason to think that tomorrow will be any different.

Steven Gerrard's hat-trick leads Liverpool past Everton at Anfield, turning things around after the disappointing performance on the weekend. Liverpool were dominant for large spells, and while there'll be more than a few questions on the Everton side of things, there's no denying that Liverpool were more than deserving victors.
