Just in case I failed to mention it here before, Sportsnet will be streaming tomorrow night's WCQ
vs. Honduras from Montreal. As for regular TV coverage, the schedule is the typical convoluted
Sportsnet mash of times and delays that requires a PhD in media studies to unravel. The must-win
for Canada game will be streamed live on [.
Here, the latest scores from the latest round of 2010 World Cup and African Cup of Nations
qualifiers...
The joint qualifying campaign will decide which five teams will join hosts South Africa at the
World Cup in 2010.
The qualification process will also decide the 15 teams who will join host Angola to take part
at the 2010 African Cup of Nations.
Now that South Africa have been eliminated from playing in the 2010 African Cup of Nations in
Angola ahead of hosting the 2010 World Cup, many in the nation are blaming the South African
Football Association (Safa) for their football development programs.
Safa chief Raymond Hack doesn't respond kindly to these critics, calling them "idiots who do
not know what development is.
jpg75 of the Voyageurs managed to sit on on a conference press call with Julian DeGuzman earlier
today. A summary of the call was posted on the V's boards. In a nutshell, JDG mentioned that Canada
will be targeting the back 4 of Honduras as the weak link. The expect Honduras will give the
Canucks [.
Benin overcame the formidable challenge of Angola on Sunday to join Nigeria and Cameroon in the
last phase of African qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
A 3-2 win in Cotonou for the small West African country came 24 hours after Cameroon had secured
their progress by beating the Cape Verde Islands 2-1 in Praia.
The 2010 World Cup qualifiers are approaching for the South American nations as the seventh and
eighth matches are taking place in the sole CONMEBOL group. The race to secure qualification could
not be more competitive as the top seven countries are separated by a mere six points - the table
could be completely transformed after these two matches.
Wow, a huge upset in the first round of European World Cup qualifiers as Austria beat France 3-1.
When you look at those lineups, there is no way that France should not at least have come out of
Vienna without a draw, and even that would have to be considered an upset. I am sure that the
pressure is now squarely on Raymond Domenech, but it really should be on the French FA for keeping
Domenech after the debacle that was the French performance at Euro 2008.
The Miracle in Mexico, the Fracas in Chiapas is going to be live on Sportsnet across Canada
regardless of what cable package you have. If you get Sportsnet, you will have the opportunity to
witness one of this country's greatest soccer achievements - the dismantling of Sven
Gorran-Erikson's Mexico.
Carl Valeri to start.
Remember the Socceroos at the World Cup in Germany 2006. How could you forget one of Australia's
greatest sporting moments?
How many Canberrans played against Carl in his junior days. Maybe beat him in a sprint or a tackle,
maybe even nutmegged him.
Well Canberra's Carl Valeri, the former Tuggeranong United junior, is crucial to Australia's hopes
to get to South Africa 2010.
Here's an interesting story from Goal.com where Glasgow Celtic are rumored to be pursuing veteran
Argentinian international forward Hernan Crespo during the winter transfer window. This would be a
very exciting move for the Celtic fans and also the Scottish Premier League as Crespo has been an
international star for many years, played for many big clubs, and could provide a real lift for the
team in their matches whether they are in the Champions League or UEFA Cup come January.
Let's hope the Dutch game tonight isn't like the last time we met them prior to the World Cup. It
ended 1-1 but boy Holland should have beat us 7-1. It was tough to watch. At least the score
doesn't matter tonight....yeah right!
MIERLO, NETHERLANDS / SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA
6 September 2008
Mixed news from the Qantas Socceroos training camp in Mierlo, Netherlands, where the team is now
resting prior to tonight's match (local time) between the Netherlands and Australia.

First Half:
Australia defended well against the expected Uzbek onslaught. It never came, not early and it
wasn't until Australia had scored that the Uzbeks were able to get some sustained pressure and
corners.
The feared Uzbek's seemed to fear Australia and maybe they should.
Its sort of a slow news day (or week rather) in MLS. Tonight we have our third World Cup qualifier
in Chicago against Trinidad and Tobago. The question is going into this game, who will Bob Bradley
start? Keep some of the same from the Cuba game or change things up a bit at home? Both [...]
Carlos Vela has found himself in a minor predicament – will he follow in the footsteps of
Hugo Sanchez or Thierry Henry? Depending where your loyalties lie, Mexicans have resembled him to
their great legend and former manager, while the Arsenal faithful have gunned Vela as their next
club legend. Can the former U17 World Cup Golden Shoe winner truly live up to the summit of
expectations being levelled against him?
The Wasps, who have never qualified for a FIFA World Cup and who have only made one African Nations
Cup (2004), have advanced into the third round of the Confederation of African Football's 2010
World Cup qualification tournament.
20 nations will advance into this third round hoping to land one of the 5 spots open for the 2010
World Cup.
Quickly wanted to poiint you to a couple of interesting Canadian soccer tidbits I've come across in
the past few days. First, there is an interview with Dwayne DeRosario in the National Post where he
has some unkind words about, surprise surprise, the CSA. Here's a sample: They are more concerned
about trying to make money [.
This weekend's CONCACAF World Cup qualifier between Mexico and Jamaica that was scheduled for
Saturday in Kingston has been moved to Mexico City after Hurricane Gustav struck the Jamaican
capital. The decision was agreed upon by the Jamaican and Mexican federations as well as CONCACAF
and FIFA. The game will now be played at the Azteca [.
Now that South Africa has been eliminated from the 2010 African Cup of Nations, will South Africa
coach Joel Santana get the boot?
A South African newspaper editorial from the Cape Times doesn't seem to think so.
The South African Football Association must stay calm and resist the urge to fire coach
Joel Santana after Bafana Bafana failed to qualify for the African Nations Cup in Angola in
2010.
Scott MacDonald, Jade North, Josh Kennedy, Vince Grella, Jason Culina, Mark Viduka, Tim Cahill,
Matthew Spiranovic, Michael Beauchamp, Mile Sterjovski, Bruce Djite. Non of these players started
tonight and don't forget Nicky Carle!
Asia has tested the Socceroos; and Pim Verbeek now has a depth of player few could have dreamed of
after the last World Cup.
Crap. Working in post secondary education means that this is the craziest time of the year for
me...and always the worst time to update a blog. There is so much happening ahead of the WCQ games
next week, I've got no time to update the blog!!!! ARGHHHH.... Team Canada arrives in Montreal will
have to suffice for [.
So far, no surprises in the CONCACAF qualifying for the 2010 World Cup. After two games the usual
'Big Three' lead their respective groups and the teams behind them aren't really a shocker either.
Two teams we thought would do better this time around in qualifying have a combine two points.
Those two I'm talking about [.
After a 0-2 win over Armenia in a historic match in Armenian capital Yerevan, Turkey are now set to
host Belgium in Istanbul on Wednesday.
Euro 2008 semifinalists Turkey defeated Armenia 2-0 in their first ever encounter in history.
Tuncay Sanli and Semih Senturk scored second-half goals in Turkey's first Group 5 match in 2010
World Cup qualifiers.
Jamaica have sacked their national technical director René Simoes following bleak results in
the CONCACAF Third Round in a bid to qualify for the prestigious World Cup finals in 2010. Defeats
to Mexico and Honduras during the past week condemned Jamaica to the bottom place in Group 2,
leaving the Reggae Boyz with only minimal chance of advancing to the final qualification stage.
Okay, if you were Dale Mitchell, who would you start between the pipes on Saturday against
Honduras? I'm serious here. I really am curious as to what a manager in his position is thinking
right now. If he doesn't go with Onstad, will that shake up the confidence of a keeper whose
confidence is already shaken [.
Japan won away 3-2 in Bahrain, and in the big news Aussie opponents on Thursday our time Uzbekistan
got flogged 3-0 by Qatar!
Fantastic result for Australia. Given we comfortably disposed of Qatar, if we can get a decent
result in Tashkent on Thursday we could be off to a flyer.
Putting ourselves and Japan firmly in the driving seat for South Africa, even at this early stage.
One thing I do enjoy is an international fixture date. Loads of games and lots of interesting
storylines. Today is just that day around the world as countries from all over take part in another
round of World Cup qualifying matches. Aside from the CONCACAF fun there are some great matches
across the pond, particularly one [.
As much as we hoped and prayed for a miracle, it never came. In the end, beating, or even drawing
Mexico in Mexico was just too much to expect. But we can take something positives away from this
result. There is decent officiating in CONCACAF. Full marks to the T&T ref who made good calls and
[.
Bad news for Ethiopia.
FIFA has announced that Ethiopia have been kicked out of the qualifying campaign for the
2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The results from all four matches played by Ethiopia to date in Group 8 are now void.
The Emergency Committee of football's world governing body suspended the Ethiopia Football
Federation (EFF) on July 29th.
Just when you think TV coverage might be geting a bit better for soccer in this country comes the
shocker that Sportsnet may not be carrying the Mexico-Canada WCQ on Wednesday from Tuxtla
Gutierrez, Chiappa. The V's boards are lighting up with responses from Sportsent to their emails
reagrding coverage.
While most of the world is in qualification mode for the 2010 World Cup, the host country South
Africa is also in 'qualification mode.'
FIFA president Sepp Blatter visits South Africa next week and organizers of the 2010 World Cup are
confident the head of football's organizing body will like what he sees.
A few days ago I ranted about the lack of TV coverage by Sportsnet for the Mexico game. Today I eat
crow and recant my rant as they finally announced (via Gerry Dobson's blog), that they will be
carrying the game and yes, it will be live. And finally, many of you have been wondering about
[...]
Do or die only counts when you have been mathematically eliminated. And we haven't been yet. But
it's hard to find a whole lot of confidence that we are going to move onto South Africa after
tonight's performance. The long desperate ball. Is this really what we have come to? This is not
the Canada I [.
Okay, Saturday night is behind me. Time to regroup and prepare for Wednesday. For inspiration, I
went back to something I wrote shortly after the Brazil tilt in Seattle. But the most important
take away from this game for me was that we came back. Not once, but twice. Besides showing
some real flair on the [.
