Just in case I failed to mention it here before, Sportsnet will be streaming tomorrow night's WCQ
vs. Honduras from Montreal. As for regular TV coverage, the schedule is the typical convoluted
Sportsnet mash of times and delays that requires a PhD in media studies to unravel. The must-win
for Canada game will be streamed live on [.
The draw for the final round of qualifying for the 2010 World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations took
place today in Zurich, Switzerland.
So what happened?
African champions Egypt were handed what many would consider to be the best of the five group
draws.
The Egyptians will face Algeria, Zambia and Rwanda in Group C as they attempt to reach their
third World Cup finals.
Here, the latest scores from the latest round of 2010 World Cup and African Cup of Nations
qualifiers...
The joint qualifying campaign will decide which five teams will join hosts South Africa at the
World Cup in 2010.
The qualification process will also decide the 15 teams who will join host Angola to take part
at the 2010 African Cup of Nations.
The two groups have been drawn for Asia's final round of World Cup Qualification. Each group has
five teams with the top two from each group advancing to South Africa. The third place teams in the
groups will meet in a two-legged playoff with the winner playing the champion of Oceania.
Here are the two groups:
Group A
Australia
Japan
Bahrain
Uzbekistan
Qatar
Group B
South Korea
Iran
Saudi Arabia
North Korea
UAE
Although both groups have their difficulties, it looks to me like Group B is the tougher one since
three of the teams made it to Germany in 2006 (S Korea, Iran & Saudi Arabia), plus North Korea is
always capable of a surprise.
Loads of action last night in CONCACAF and around the world for 2010 World Cup qualifying. I won't
go into other regions of the world for now but I did want to talk a little about our own region's
group of games last night. Group A: US 1 - 0 Guatemala: Ugly, ugly game but for the [...]
Now that South Africa have been eliminated from playing in the 2010 African Cup of Nations in
Angola ahead of hosting the 2010 World Cup, many in the nation are blaming the South African
Football Association (Safa) for their football development programs.
Safa chief Raymond Hack doesn't respond kindly to these critics, calling them "idiots who do
not know what development is.
jpg75 of the Voyageurs managed to sit on on a conference press call with Julian DeGuzman earlier
today. A summary of the call was posted on the V's boards. In a nutshell, JDG mentioned that Canada
will be targeting the back 4 of Honduras as the weak link. The expect Honduras will give the
Canucks [.
12 from 12 for Fabio's boys 1. Wayne Rooney is Samson in reverse. His England goal drought is well
and truly over. Keep that head bald and keep the goals coming, Wazza. 2. Steven Gerrard's
international career is not over. That talk was brought on by a distinct lack of football news this
week, methinks.
A couple days slimming his roster down to 12, it looks like US coach Bob Bradley is about to fatten
things up with the addition of a bunch of MLSers.
Various reports have Bradley calling Drew Moor (FC Dallas), Chris Seitz (Real Salt Lake), John
Thorrington (Chicago Fire), Chris Rolfe (Chicago Fire) and Chad Barrett (Chicago Fire).

Can the US redeem themselves tonight? That is the question. After the washout at Wembley, the US

The US is less then an hour away from starting their long road to South Africa and Bob Bradley has
released his lineup. Needless to say, there are a couple surprises. First of all, Guzan will start
in goal instead of Tim Howard.
US 8-0 Barbados
Anyway you look at this, it was a great way for the US to start their World Cup run. This was the
expected result and the team lived up to it, but that doesn't mean there isn't room for
improvement. With that in mind, here are the player grades:
Starting XI
Brad Guzan (GK) - What a boring way to up your international appearance numbers.
Sir Bob has released his 20-man roster for next week's World Cup qualifier in Cuba (Sept. 6) and
for the home match in Bridgeview, Ill., against Trinidad and Tobago (Sept. 10). GOALKEEPERS: Tim
Howard, Brad Guzan. DEFENDERS: Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, Heath Pearce, Frankie Hejduk, Danny
Califf, Steve Cherundolo*, Michael Orozco, Marvell Wynne.
The head of South Africa's Tourism Services Association warned that due to continuing power
problems in South Africa, the country may face serious problems hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup:
South Africa's energy crisis raises serious questions about its ability to successfully host the
2010 World Cup, the head of the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association [.
Benin overcame the formidable challenge of Angola on Sunday to join Nigeria and Cameroon in the
last phase of African qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
A 3-2 win in Cotonou for the small West African country came 24 hours after Cameroon had secured
their progress by beating the Cape Verde Islands 2-1 in Praia.
FIFA has placed $17.6 million into the prize fund for next year's Confederations Cup in South
Africa.
"The winners will receive $3.75 million and the runners-up $3.25 million, while the team finishing
third will get $2.75 million with $2.25-million going to the fourth-placed country. The other
participants will each receive $1.
As the final weekend of the second round of African World Cup qualifying draws near, only Cameroon,
Benin and Nigeria have guaranteed their place in the third and final phase.
The 12 group winners and the eight best second-placed sides will stay in the hunt for a place at
the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
US coach Bob Bradley has released 10 players from camp ahead of their second leg match against
Barbados. Most of the players are MLS based, so this is not much of a surprise, however I kind of
thought he would keep Guzan around in case Howard is still having back issues (plus if Guzan still
wants to move to England, he needs more international caps).
I really had no intent of finding these photos today but felt they were worth passing on to
everyone. Its some construction updates to some of the World Cup Stadiums in South Africa. Looks
like they are well on their way to play host to the 2010 World Cup. I won't post too many but I

The 2010 World Cup qualifiers are approaching for the South American nations as the seventh and
eighth matches are taking place in the sole CONMEBOL group. The race to secure qualification could
not be more competitive as the top seven countries are separated by a mere six points - the table
could be completely transformed after these two matches.
The roster has finally been released for Canada's final World Cup (non) qualifying game against
Jamaica. This is a vastly different team than we have seen for the past 2 years with a lot of youth
getting the call. Not surprising since we really have nothing left to play for, except pride, and
many key [.
FIFA has denied Iraq's appeal to disqualify Qatar from World Cup Qualifying even though it admits
Qatar did not play by the rules.
This Sunday saw Qatar beat Iraq 1-0 to advance to the final round of Asian WCQ, however one of
their players was not eligible to play for Qatar.
Marcio Passos De Albuquerque, know as Emerson, was born in Brazil and represented Brazil at youth
level, thus he was ineligible.
Fifa has ruled that the Dominican Republic, U.S. Virgin Islands, Montserrat and Surinam cannot host
World Cup qualifiers because their stadiums do not meet the organizations standards.
All four of these teams were due to take part in home-home series in the first round of qualifying,
however their series will no consist of just one game with the winner advancing to the second
round.
Wow, a huge upset in the first round of European World Cup qualifiers as Austria beat France 3-1.
When you look at those lineups, there is no way that France should not at least have come out of
Vienna without a draw, and even that would have to be considered an upset. I am sure that the
pressure is now squarely on Raymond Domenech, but it really should be on the French FA for keeping
Domenech after the debacle that was the French performance at Euro 2008.
The Miracle in Mexico, the Fracas in Chiapas is going to be live on Sportsnet across Canada
regardless of what cable package you have. If you get Sportsnet, you will have the opportunity to
witness one of this country's greatest soccer achievements - the dismantling of Sven
Gorran-Erikson's Mexico.
Finland's U21 team has a chance of achieving what would be the best achievement in Finnish football
so far as they play Austria twice. The winner of the tie will qualify for the U21 European
Championships to be held in Sweden next year. Markku Kanerva is unlikely to change his team
compared to the group stage [.
Gawd, this is depressing. Less than a week before this nightmare WCQ campaign ends (Wednesday in
Jamaica) and still no roster from the CSA. I guess they are having trouble finding players who will
actually don the shirt for the MNT. But some good investigative work perusing club sites by OOT has
revealed a few [.
ESPN and ABC have made the speculation official, Dave O'Brien and Eric Wynalda are no longer
commentators for their soccer broadcasts. This includes MLS and US soccer matches.
Replacing them will be JP Dellacamera doing play by play and John Harkes with analyst. The rest of
the team will be Allen Hopkins (sideline reporter), Julie Foudy (studio Analyst) and Rob Stone who
will sub in for Dellacamera.
The long road that should take the US men to South Africa begins June 15 at the Home Depot Center
in Carson, California, when the team hosts either Barbados or Dominica in the first leg of their
series. The game kicks off at 5pm ET/2pm PT. Oddly enough, this is the first World Cup qualifier
held in Carson.
Here is Jack Bell's article from the New York Times that reviews each player's performance in the
game with a rating scale of 1-10, which is commonly done in soccer. To begin, I believe that Jack's
ratings vary a bit too much. Its usually pretty rare that players on the same team get a score of 3
and also 8.
Carl Valeri to start.
Remember the Socceroos at the World Cup in Germany 2006. How could you forget one of Australia's
greatest sporting moments?
How many Canberrans played against Carl in his junior days. Maybe beat him in a sprint or a tackle,
maybe even nutmegged him.
Well Canberra's Carl Valeri, the former Tuggeranong United junior, is crucial to Australia's hopes
to get to South Africa 2010.

Prior to his arrival at the University of Binghamton, Cameron Keith (Aberdeenshire, Scotland)
enjoyed two successful campaigns with Keith FC in the Scottish Highland Football League. Last year,
his club claimed the league title after an impressive and historic run.
Rudd Gullit's comments last month on the quality of players coming out of the college game got the
ball rolling, but Wednesday's 2-0 defeat at the hands of England has added fuel (i.e., more
empirical evidence) to the debate. The latest to address the issue of player development (aside
from me, of course) is Jeff Carlisle at ESPNsoccernet.
The second leg of Concacaf World Cup Qualifying swings into full gear this weekend as 24 teams look
to advance to the first group phase. Although there are strong favorites in just about every one of
these contests, the constant possibility of an upset will be present. Who knows, an early surprise
goal or red card could kill a team's dream.
US 1-0 Barbados
In a game that saw the favorites look tired and even more defensive minded then normal, the
underdogs had their chance to run the game. But unlike the Italy-Spain Euro match, the US was able
to see their opposition out of the competition.
Yesterday's game was a flashback for me as right from the opening moments, it reminded me of some
late-80's games due to the horrible video production.
We do not want Uzbekistan.
The draw is on Fox Sports at 7pm.
A shocking draw would be Australia, Iran, Japan, Uzbekistan and North Korea.
A great draw would be Australia, Iran, Bahrain, Qatar and North Korea or UAE.
Right now 28-year-old midfielder Chris James is starring for Tampere United in the
Finnish Veikkausliiga. So far this season, James has notched five goals in 14 appearances. The
former Fulham player actually played in over 30 matches for the various English youth squads, but
decided to play his senior international soccer for the country of his birth with the New Zealand
All Whites.
South Africa national team coach Joel Santana says his side is almost to the point where they'll do
reasonably well in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
Santana's been the focal point of criticism the past few months as Bafana Bafana have struggled,
failing to qualify for the 2010 African Cup of Nations.
The dream for South Africa 2010 is officially over, with Canada dropping a 3-0 decision to Jamaica
last night. The CSA blow by blow details are here. The only small detail left is for Dale Mitchell
to be replaced. Please, CSA, instill some confidence in us lowly fans - replace the coach. Even you
have to realize [.
Several CONCACAF teams competed recently. Here are the scores grouped in either
friendly

qualifier.
International Friendly:

- Jamaica 1 - 1 Costa Rica
- Haiti 1 - 1 Venezuela
- Honduras 2 - 0 Paraguay
