The last 10-15 minutes of regular time and stoppage time was amazing. It was totally frantic and United supporters were rewarded with a goal at the end of regulation. I was actually telling my wife that the set play off of that free kick should have been to fake it at goal and just slot it to Simms who was faking that run anyway. Click to continue reading...

US Open Cup Final Preview

WVHooligan 02 September @ 11:15 AM EST

For once the US Open Cup is getting it's just due for some hype going into tonight's final. It sure didn't hurt that two of the league's best PR teams are in the final. DC United has done it's best hyping the match against expansion side Seattle Sounders FC. Oh and there's been a fun back and forth thing between the club's front offices.

We've had a full day of interesting news with the UEFA Champions League draw, the US Men's National team roster announcement that took four hours to do, and random news here and there. Time now to close down the day with some links and thoughts on what's going on.

I wanted to get into some MVP race discussion.

Time to round out the end of the work week with some links and thoughts. I have a couple MLS thoughts and one US national team item to discuss tonight.

DC Plays For Trophies

I love DC United and how they market their club. They've put little stickers on newspapers throughout DC with the date of the US Open Cup final against Seattle.

Chris Pontius helped lead DC past Rochester last night, can he do it again against Seattle? (Photo via DCUntied.com)

Last night we got to see exactly who would step up and move on to the 2009 edition of the US Open Cup. The Seattle Sounders needed an 89th minute goal to survive and an overtime strike from Stephen King to reach the first final in their MLS club's history as the Sounders rallied in a 2-1 overtime victory against the Houston Dynamo.

Editor's Note: Geoff Reid appears on WVHooligan each week. Today he talks about the US Open Cup and how important it should be. Feel free to leave Geoff your comments below.

Growing up the other side of the pond, the FA Cup was a way of life where at some point we all could have taken part in the tournament at some stage.

Another Reason To Love The Seattle-Portland Rivalry

WVHooligan 02 July @ 09:35 AM EST

Last night's US Open Cup match between the Seattle Sounders FC and the Portland Timbers was pretty sweet. Not only did this rivalry get some good love across the land but it produced a quality game with some even more entertaining fans in the stands at PGE Park.

Makes me want to fast forward a bit to 2011 to see this rivalry in Major League Soccer.

Only Impressions -- D.C. United 5 : 3 New York Red Bulls

The DCenters 20 May @ 09:55 PM EST

There will be no debrief, as this game isn't even a U.S. Open Cup match. It's a play-in, and frankly that's crap. I want games against the Islanders (of Pennsylvania), against the Battery, against some team called Ajax that's from Baltimore. That's the U.S. Open Cup I love. This play-in system against MLS teams that I see twice on other occasions just doesn't move me.
