After a couple of months kicking heels and whiling away the time with friendlies, transfer rumours
and one or two actual moves, the wait is over. New boys San Martín de Tucumán will kick
off the Primera División A Torneo Apertura 2008 later today when they host Huracán. You
can follow the whole of the [.
The full fixture list for the Primera División A Torneo Apertura 2008 has been released.
Thanks to Seba for posting the fixtures when they were first announced in a comment last
night. Read on for the 'HEGS-approved' official list, with all the clásicos highlighted.
Except the single midweek date, which is noted, all these dates refer to [.
The 2008 Torneo Apertura kicks off on Friday evening, so I think it's about time for the annual
season preview, don't you? Long-time readers may notice that this is largely an updated version of
last year's potted histories, but I've added a few things - you can now find out how much I really
know [.
The 2008 Torneo Apertura superclásico kicks off in a little under six hours, but already
the starting lineups are known, bar any last-minute calls of bluff or injuries in the warmup.
Luciano Figueroa's transfer has officially gone through in time for the former River striker to
start on the bench for Boca, wearing the number 18 [.
Huracán won the match against Estudiantes which marked the 100th anniversary of their founding
on Saturday, but the big day was tragically overshadowed when three of their fans were shot -
probably by members of the barra brava of their local rivals San Lorenzo - as their coach returned
to Parque Patricios after the match [.
The AFA's incompetence in organising a playoff system that might have either rendered the final
match meaningless, or ensured that one team would go into it without any motivation to win,
has been papered over by Boca Juniors, who on Saturday evening beat San Lorenzo de Almagro 3-1 in
Racing's stadium.
That's the message being sent to fans of Primera A clubs by the AFA. From the start of
this year's Apertura, new regulations will be introduced to increase safety in the top
flight stadia of Capital Federal. As part of a long-delayed initiative, clubs including River
Plate, Boca Juniors, Vélez Sársfield and San Lorenzo will have to have 90% of
their [.
Everyone's patience has a breaking point. It seems that finally, that of River Plate's board has
reached the same point that Diego Simeone's got to a few months ago, because it was announced on
Saturday that Ariel Ortega, the playmaker who had a vital role in River's first championship in
four years during the Torneo [.
A quick note to let you know that during the 2008 winter break (that's summer for our northern
hemisphere readers!), the page formerly known as 'squad lists' has been renamed 'transfers', and
will contain a list, updated as frequently and accurately as I can manage (but please bear with me)
of all the ins and [.
Following San Martín de Tucumán's winning start to their first season back in Primera A
last night, it was the turn of Godoy Cruz to cause a shock, and not only did they win, they did so
away from home against one of the more impressive teams of the last few years. Two goals from [...]
River Plate and Boca Juniors. Undisputably, the two biggest clubs in Argentine football. River, the
defending champions in the league. Boca, six times champions of South America, most recently just
last year. On Sunday, both were playing much smaller teams. River hadn't ever lost away to new
promoted San Martín, and returned to Tucumán 15 [.
It's that time again. The tenth round of the 2008 Torneo Apertura is upon us, and with it comes one
of the world's biggest derbies: all eyes on the Monumental on Sunday, where River Plate will be
hosting Boca Juniors in another superclásico. There'll be big match buildup on HEGS as well as
live coverage [.
Hopefully all HEGS readers had a good few days off for Christmas (those who had days off for it, at
least). After a couple of days away from the keyboard myself (you only need a mouse to play
Football Manager), I hope I've now got things straight enough to look back on what was a [...]
The second round of the 2008 Torneo Apertura is almost upon us. This weekend, champions River Plate
host Rosario Central, last week's victorious newcomers to the division, San Martín de
Tucumán and Godoy Cruz, respectively visit Independiente and host San Lorenzo, and Boca
Juniors, who are in Barcelona on Saturday to appear in F.
With the season having started, it's been a little while since we made mention of the transfer
market, but there are a few deals being talked about at present which merit mention. Prior to this
weekend's clásico with River Plate, San Lorenzo welcome a new arrival on a year-long loan,
Santiago Solari, having beaten several [.
Time marches on, and thus arrives the fourth weekend of the Primera A 2008 Torneo Apertura. This
weekend sees another clásico as River Plate welcome former player Santiago Solari back to
Argentine soil - he'll be stepping onto the pitch in San Lorenzo's colours against his old club.
Racing have a tricky assignment: they're away [.
It's not over just yet. The Torneo Apertura proper came to a conclusion this weekend but so far we
only know the order of things at one end of the table. Yes that's right, it's official: River Plate
are rubbish. The top four all won - in Lanús's case in vain - so the title [...]
So it comes to this. The 2008 Torneo Apertura title will be decided by virtue of a three-way
'mini-league' (new Spanish word alert: that's 'liguilla')between San Lorenzo, Boca Juniors and
Tigre, who've all finished the normal season on 39 points. The fixtures were drawn up on Sunday
night at the AFA headquarters.
By the end of today, Argentina will have a new champion. San Lorenzo are out of the running due to
the goal difference mathematics, so it's a straight race between Boca Juniors and Tigre. Boca have
won twenty-eight titles (amateur and professional), whilst Tigre have finished second, once - and
that was a year ago.
Early leaders Tigre and champions River have yet to play in the third weekend of the Apertura, but
on Friday evening Colón lead the league table after a 1-0 win away to Rosario Central for
their second win of the season. Having drawn with River on the opening weekend and thrashed
Gimnasia de Jujuy away [.
The players are taking to the pitch in the Monumental for the biggest match of the weekend, and if
you're not fortunate enough to be able to watch, you can follow it right here on HEGS, where I'll
be attempting to update this post every few minutes with the latest goings-on in the match. Just
[...]
Practically a triple-header coming up: we're about to go through three rounds of matches in one
week, because the twelfth round will come in midweek. This weekend, though, Argentinos travel to
Independiente following their win in Sao Paulo on Wednesday, Boca take on Central and River visit
Gimnasia de Jujuy - it's a very real [.
Here we go again. There's a bumper programme on Sunday and, due to the midweek action, only one
match on Friday night. Independiente get us rolling against Godoy Cruz. Sunday sees two
clásicos, one in La Bombonera, where faltering joint league leaders San Lorenzo take on Boca
Juniors, and the other in El Coloso Del [.
We're getting towards the business end of proceedings now. Can San Lorenzo regain the initiative
after they finally got back to winning ways last weekend? Can River start afresh under assistant
boss Gabriel Rodríguez? Will Tigre get the wins (and results in other matches) they need for
Copa Libertadores qualification?
At the time of writing, TN haven't got round to putting this week's Show de Goles onto their blog
yet, so instead, I'm embedding it directly into this page. Read on to see the goals, and the normal
running order, as well as a couple of links to the TN videos of goals from the [...]
It's been a long and tortuous season for Racing, but on Sunday night, at last, their fans will
finally be able to sleep sound in their beds, and when they wake up on Monday morning will be going
into work or school with, if not pride, then at least a massive sense of relief. On [...]
Ricardo Caruso Lombardi has stepped down as manager of Rosario club Newell's Old Boys, one week
before the start of the 2008 Torneo Apertura. The manager has left the club after ten-and-a-half
months in charge, probably a result of a poor relationship with club president Eduardo
López and certain senior players, although for his own part he [.
Ariel Ortega agreed with the River Plate board on Tuesday to go out on loan for a season to Mendoza
club Independiente Rivadavia, of Primera B Nacional. Ortega turned down the chance to move to the
United Arab Emirates to play a season for Al Mir Sports due to the distance from his family and
[...]
The goals from the first round of matches in the 2008 Torneo Apertura are now online, and you can
view them through the TN sportblog by clicking here, and the picture's a lot better this season
than we've had to put up with previously. For those who don't know which sides wear which kits,
read [...]
For 82 minutes, it was frustration for River Plate on Sunday afternoon, as their attacking
intentions foundered against the spirited resistance of Rosario Central's defence and, in
particular, a sterling performance from visiting goalkeeper Jorge Broun. It was left for captain
Eduardo Tuzzio to finally put the champions ahead with a header from a corner [.
The goals from the second weekend of Torneo Apertura action are online now (with Newell's vs. Boca
to follow on Wednesday night), and can be viewed through the TN sportsblog by clicking here. Read
on, as usual, for the running order of this video clip and for my personal favourite strikes of the
weekend, taken [.
The third weekend is already upon us, with Boca returning to league action after their holiday in
Catalunya by hosting Lanús. The champions are away to Banfield on Saturday, whilst it's an
all-Santa Fe Province clash between Rosario Central and Colón which kicks the weekend off.
Estudiantes, having finally won a match on Wednesday night [.
An extra treat this week, because the goals from the lower divisions have been put online by TN as
well - something they do sometimes and not at others. For the Primera A goals of the weekend, all
twenty-two of them, including an absolutely unbelievable one from José Sand for Lanús
(the first of his [.
It's been a long two weeks away from top flight club action, but after the disappointments of the
selección's performances against Paraguay and Peru, the Primera A is back to provide us -
surely - with some good football and excitement once again. Champions River Plate have been
experimenting during the break and it's anyone's guess [.
For those who haven't noticed, the HEGS map of Argentina, produced by Bill's Sports Maps, has
been updated for the 2008-2009 Primera A sides. Check the Map page to see it in its full glory.
There was no doubt as to the hot issue of the day in the Argentine press on Monday. The Boca
Juniors vs. Independiente clásico in La Bombonera saw two red cards for the visitors during a
second half which referee Pablo Lunati seemed to be losing control of at one point. Guillermo
Rodríguez grabbed a [.
The sixth match of the Apertura was the date preordained by River Plate manager Diego Simeone as
the day his first-choice side would finally come to life. Oh dear oh dear. River lost at home to
Vélez on Wednesday and, one third of the way through the campaign, surely can't afford any
more slip-ups if [.
The first of Sunday's two clásicos lived up to the name as, in a frantic encounter which
barely saw the pace let up at any point, River Plate and Racing Club drew 3-3 in a match which saw
no little rain, late chances to win for both sides, a red card right at the death, [...]
Lucas Viatri had hardly had a sniff of anything in the superclásico, but popped up in the 60th
minute to decide the match all the same in a manner the great Martín Palermo, looking on,
would have been proud of. The goal came after Boca had been reduced to ten men through the
sending-off of [...]
All 27 of the goals from the fourteenth round of the 2008 Torneo Apertura are online now, and as
per usual you can watch them - including a blink-and-you'll-miss-it stunner from Riquelme at the
very start - via the wonderful TN Sportblog by clicking here. Once you've done that, if
you're not sure which team is which, [.
