Sky Blue's presence in the final is a bit of a surprise as they just barely qualified for the
playoffs. Of course, in a league of seven teams playing a fairly short season I'm not sure the
standings mean all that much. They had a rocky season - they fired their coach at the start, and
the next to take the job quit just a few weeks ago.

©Mark Dadswell/Getty Images How does this happen? How did a team as lethargic as Nigeria make

While we lament the loss of the Nigerian Super Falcons in the Women's Olympic football tournament,
praise must be heaped on the African men, who all swept into the quarterfinals of the men's Olympic

on Ivory Coast in the last eight.

So we didn't make it in the Olympics. It's almost like we hit the peak of the mountain right when
we got to China. We won the first match, drew the second match (which felt like a loss) and then
fell today in the final match of the group phase. It was tough to watch really, [...]

Andrew: It was a satisfactory win for the US this morning against Japan. In the early stages of the

forwards through Adu and McBride. My biggest gripe with this game was our outside backs, or well
just one in particular; [.

Well as you all know I'm sure the US is atop their group with a not so convincing win today. For
the first 23 minutes or so the United States dominated the game controlling the ball, creating
chances, and leaving Japan only with a counter attack. The domination ended with a cheeky set play
from a corner which left a Japanese player all alone at the far post with an empty net.

Africa is sending only one nation to the 2008 Women's Olympic Football Tournament: Nigeria.
Nigeria are a dominant force in African women's football, winning the continental championship
seven times. But when it comes to the world stage, the Super Falcons barely register a blip.
In five appearances at the FIFA Women's World Cup finals, two at the Olympic Football Tournament

beyond the opening round on two occasions.
