The 2008 MLS schedule is just a few weeks away from release, but there are a number of problems
they need to overcome. Here are the scheduling issues as presented by Steve Davis:
- SuperLiga
- Concacaf Champions League
- US Open Cup
- 2008 Olympics
- ESPN2 Thursday night broadcasts
- World Cup Qualifying (the league will play on international dates)
- No national broadcasts from San Jose
- Stadium scheduling conflicts
- Beckham
- International friendly competitions
That's a lot to cram into a 31-week regular season and no doubt some items (US Open Cup) are going
to get the short end of things.
Just four weeks into the 2008 season and some trends are starting to appear. League wide average
attendance numbers are pretty steady at a bit above 15,000, which is lower then last season's
overall average, however a bit above where the numbers sat at a similar time last season (a year
ago the average per game was just under 15,000).
You all know my style by now, I'm not team specific on the blog but I am a Rapids supporter through
and through. By now you've heard, the Rapids spanked the "mighty" LA Galaxy on Saturday night in
front of a sell out crowd here in Denver. Way to go 'Pids! Big win! While the Rapids fans are
jumping for joy after not seeing that big a margin of victory since 1996 and the club is patting
themselves on the back for a successful kick off we here at FCTP need to look at the win from
another angle.
Something I thought I would never see happen at D. C United, finally actually did. As if this
offseason has not been trying, and disappointing enough for the ardent Black & Red supporters in
D.C., theres now one more thing to pile on top of everything, and its not a very pretty site if you
ask me.
According to Steven Goff at the Washington Post D.C. United has once again traded the rights of an
out of contract player, this time veteran defender Greg Vanney, to the Los Angeles Galaxy. Vanney
returns to the club with which he spent the first six seasons of his career. In return, United has
obtained 19 year old midfielder, Quavas Kirk.
So after attending both the Washington Capitals game this past Friday evening at Verizon Center,
and a friend's birthday party that night afterwards, I got sick. I've been indoors, under blankets
sweating it out, and FINALLY feel better today, thus why there has been no activity here for a few
days.
The long awaited Christian Gomez deal was finalised Friday afternoon, and the pending trade between
D.
MLS and its member clubs today released thier respective schedules for the upcoming 2008 season
today. D.C. United's home schedule is slightly better than last year's. Our favorite home match
days and start time has always been the Saturday, 7:30 PM matches. Those matches are almost always
the best attended, usually breaking 21,000, and as high as 25,000.
Hello fellow Black & Red supporters, and soccer fans in general! I have finally decided to start a
blog which will focus on one of my favorite things in life, D.C. United Soccer! I am a current
season ticket holder, and have been regularly attending United matches since day one back in 1996.
I have missed about 3 home matches since the 2003 season.
